A rustic romance

Lucy and Matt opted for a cool boho-style wedding.

Norfolk's Godwick Great Barn provided the ideal rustic backdrop for Lucy Ward and Matt Esser's laid-back wedding. The couple met at their local pub at Christmas time and exactly two years after getting together Matt popped the question at the annual Winter Wonderland event in London. “He asked me to marry him on the same balcony where we'd seen in the New Year the year before. It was a complete surprise, he'd even had the ring designed and handmade for me,” remembers Lucy.

The couple tied the knot on 26th July, 2017 with their one-year-old son Beau in tow – literally! He made his entrance down the aisle, pulled along in his bright red Radio Flyer wagon. “It was one of the stand-out moments of the day for me,” adds Matt.

A rustic romance: Image 1
We loved the rustic barn. It had a lovely warm feel, with exposed brickwork, stripped tables and a view that seemed to go on forever. The amazing hall had beautiful boutique-style rooms too, which were perfect for getting ready and the wedding night.

A rustic romance: Image 2aI was drawn to my Willowby by Watters dress by the tattoo back and the edging of the lace bottom. I wore a rose gold and Swarovski crystal hair vine and earrings and Christian Louboutin shoes that were a gift from my mum.

A rustic romance: Image 2 I wanted my bouquet to have a messy, boho look. It included white hydrangeas and a lime green protea tied with grey velvet ribbon.

The bridesmaids wore grey Jenny Packham evening gowns and the flowergirls looked cute in white leotards with grey Bob & Blossom tutus, sparkly silver Converse shoes and flower crowns.

A rustic romance: Image 4aWe created chill-out zones outside using hay bales with cushions and throws around the firepits for our guests to sit round. Fabric streamers and milk bottles on shepherd's hooks were dotted around the field.

A rustic romance: Image 4 The table plan was hand-written on to Perspex tiles and suspended in a gilt frame.

Matt had a waistcoat to stand out from the groomsmen who wore navy light tweed suits and palm-print ties to match his, with mini succulents in their buttonholes.

A rustic romance: Image 6aWe had a tipi trimmed with grey drapes and flowers as a decorative prop inside and hung Polaroid pictures of our journey so far on one of the walls, complete with lyrics and quotes from films.

A rustic romance: Image 6 A mixture of succulents, eucalyptus, geometric shapes and candlesticks were used for the centrepieces.

We had a trio of different cakes including a naked one with gold leaf, topped with fresh flowers and macarons and another that continued the geometric theme.

A rustic romance: Image 8aMy leather jacket was a gift from Matt on the wedding morning. He got the New Image Tattoo Studio in Wisbech to hand-paint the 'wifey' design on the back. It was perfect as so much of our evening was spent outside I was able to enjoy the marshmallows around the firepits and watch the sunset wearing my new jacket!

A rustic romance: Image 8 The entertainment included a boho-style Campervan photo booth, a gin bar and fire pits with toasted marshmallows. The band played a mix of music to cater for all ages and tastes including indie classics that went down really well.
