An autumn's day

When 'Elli' wed 'Bulli' it was amidst a bright and bold autumnal theme of orange, green and brown at Great Waltham Church and The Essex Barn at Channels

Eleanor and Paul – aka Elli and Bulli – admit it was love at first sight when they met at university, but it was a while before the pair confessed their true feelings. “We were too shy and became great friends instead,” says Elli. “We did promise that if we weren't with anyone by the time we were 30 we'd marry each other – I think we always knew it was meant to be!”

With university over, the pair parted ways and moved to other ends of the country, but their love story was far from over. “At my Christmas house party in 2010, Paul confessed that he was in love with me and that I was the one.”

A few years later, Paul proposed to Elli beneath an air display by the Red Arrows. “They made a red heart in the sky above us. It was amazing and such a wonderful surprise.” With love quite literally in the air, the pair set a September date for a relaxed, fun and seasonal wedding at Channels' Essex Barn.

Here, Elli shares all the details of the day…

I was brought up in Great Waltham and it was my first choice to marry at home, with friends and family around me in a place I love. We also go to church here and feel very much part of the community.

An autumn's day: Image 2aMy dress was called Tigris by The White One. I went for a style that was classic with a subtle and slightly sexy twist. Paul wore an orange tweed jacket by Paul Costello, a mustard yellow bow tie, white shirt, tweed waistcoat and brown trousers with brown leather brogues.

An autumn's day: Image 2 The Essex Barn at Channels had everything we needed: it was already beautiful, with exposed beams, fairylights and chill-out spaces, as well as a bar. The staff were wonderful as well – so calm and friendly.

I wore a veil for our church ceremony – it really does give you a movie moment when you walk down the aisle wearing one – an iconic bridal look.

Frances Diss – my sister and bridesmaid – is a terrific hairdresser and She tamed my naturally very curly hair so it didn't frizz in the heat. In the evening she gave me an up-do with flowers.

An autumn's day: Image 6aRosie from A Vintage Wedding understood our wedding theme exactly: autumnal colours and relaxed fun. She had full creativity to choose flowers and design the bouquets – it was such a good decision to trust her completely.

An autumn's day: Image 6 Paul went to town choosing cheeses for a ‘cheese cake’, which we knew our guests would devour.

We travelled in Follie, a 1946 Ford Tudor sedan from Cool Classic Cars. It had a V8 engine roar and was such a cool-looking car, we felt like we were in an old Hollywood movie!

“We had a live band, One Foot in the Groove – I love their sound! We'd seen them at Glastonbury and it was like being back in that field, with all our friends around us.” – Elli
