A dusky pink and vintage green colour scheme set the tone for Jemma and Tom's summer barn wedding

Jemma and Tom met 10 years ago while studying architecture at Plymouth university. They were friends for more than a year before Tom asked her out on a date.

“We had dinner at Jamie Oliver's Fifteen restaurant in Cornwall, which was a surprise for my 21st birthday. It was a beautiful sunny evening and we had an amazing view of the sunset from our table,” remembers Jemma.

Fast forward seven years and Jemma's birthday marked another significant landmark in their relationship. “We were going to London to celebrate with a day of shopping, lunch and a visit to the viewing gallery at the Shard. We were staying in The Soho Hotel and just before dinner Tom said he had my birthday present and to close my eyes. When I opened them, he was on one knee,” recalls Jemma. After he popped the question, she rang her parents to tell them the news, only to discover they were in on the surprise. “Tom's family and mine were all at the restaurant waiting for us, which was perfect as we all got to share the excitement and celebrate together.”

After qualifying as architects, they started planning the big day in earnest. “It took us about a year once we got started and we did most of the organising together,” says Jemma.

The pair opted for a relaxed barn wedding with an informal afternoon tea reception and hog roast for the evening party.

We went to an open day at The Tithe Barn and it was so beautiful we couldn't resist booking it for our wedding. The space allowed us to have the layout we wanted and had an outside area – perfect for a sunny day.

Time for tea: Image 2aMy gown was a combination of two dresses with bespoke details on the top. I met the designer Sassi Holford and she talked me through the changes and what she thought would suit my figure best. It was a great experience and Sassi made it so easy.

The groomsmen wore different grey suits to add personality, with matching ties, pocket squares and buttonholes. Tom wore a dark grey, three-piece suit, made-to-measure in light material for the summer.

The bridesmaids complemented the colour scheme in dusky pink chiffon gowns, while the three flowergirls looked pretty in light pink dresses with flowery lace overlays. Tom's nephew Ben was the ring bearer.

We had garden games and the quartet that played during the ceremony also performed outside while we had drinks and canapés.
