Nearly a year and a half after the couple met, Matt proposed on 14th September, 2013, over dinner at The Shard. “It was a complete surprise,” recalls Jessica, “but I should've twigged something was up as when we got there and the maître'd exclaimed he had a superb table for us and winked at Matt. We were seated at a window table overlooking London's evening skyline. Matt ordered champagne and proposed on one knee with a simple Tiffany's silver ring, so I had something to keep while my formal engagement ring was being made. I still regularly wear the silver ring to remind me of the night.”
Soon after, the wedding planning commenced and the happy couple chose St Peter and St Paul Church in Ewhurst for their nuptials. Burrows Lea Country House set the scene for the rest of the day.
“We went there following a recommendation and were both taken with it straightaway,” says Jessica. “We wanted a traditional day but still with a relaxed atmosphere, which the house, marquee and gardens provided.” Here, Jessica tells Your Surrey Wedding more about their big day...
I wore a Pronovias dress called Udine, from The Wedding Shop, but changed the edging to pearls for a vintage feel. I had an off-the-shoulder bolero made out of the same lace to wear during the day and a cathedral-length lace-trimmed veil.
Matt wore blue tails with an ivory cravat and waistcoat. He went with his best man and ushers to Austin Reed to choose their outfits.
The flowers used throughout the day were a mix of peonies, hydrangeas, eucalyptus and roses.
We had a cheese tower instead of a traditional cake, as we both prefer savoury food. It was served to our guests later in the evening – the best part of planning the wedding was tasting the cheeses!
We named the tables after London landmarks, as we live and work in the city and got engaged at The Shard – which we named the top table after.
Our table centrepieces were hand-tied bouquets in vases.
A string quartet played classical and modern music during the drinks reception in the rose garden. In the evening we had a live band who also had a DJ play tunes between live music sets.
During his speech, the best man inadvertently referred to me as Jeff; unfortunately it didn't go unnoticed and we all went on to toast Matt and Jeff!
