Our big day: Penelope and Bernhard

Penelope Short and Bernhard Klebe enjoyed a grand celebration with personal touches on 10th September, 2011 at Winters Barn, Canterbury.

Penelope and Bernhard met while at work and it wasn't long before they started dating. "Bernie is not only my best friend but is also honest and trustworthy", describes Penelope. Bernhard adds, "Penny is dependable, kind and a good confidante. She has a playful side and is the best cook ever."

Bernhard decided to pop the question while the couple were on holiday in Madeira, Portugal. "I had planned to propose at some point during the trip but had no idea when and where specifically," he says. Penelope adds, "It was a lovely sunny day and we were sat by a koi pond when Bernie asked me - it was the perfect proposal." As soon as the couple returned home they began to plan their nuptials.
Read on for Penelope's account of the big day.

Our big day: Penelope and Bernhard: Image 2aI wore a traditional ivory lace dress from Bridal Gowns at Jodi. The design was simple but elegant, with a satin waist band.

Our big day: Penelope and Bernhard: Image 2 I accessorised my gown with a pearl necklace and bracelet, and I wore a Swarovski tiara with crystal pins in my hair.

I was 30 minutes late to the church, and although this didn't impact on the day, I think Bernie started to get a bit nervous!

I really enjoyed the church service as the vows were the most important part of our nuptials.

Our big day: Penelope and Bernhard: Image 5aI asked Vanessa and Hayley to be my bridesmaids as they're both really close friends of mine. I had two flowergirls, Emma who is Bernie's goddaughter and Ella, my niece. The bridesmaids wore full-length, purple chiffon strapless dresses which complemented my gown.

Our big day: Penelope and Bernhard: Image 5 We had a three-tiered cake comprising layers of chocolate, lemon and Victoria sponge. It looked beautiful and was decorated with intricate iced flowers.

Our pageboy was my nephew, Conor, he wore a navy blue suit and ivory-coloured waistcoat. He looked adorable.

I love small and delicate flowers such as lisianthus and freesias so I knew I wanted these in my bouquet. Bernie's mum likes roses so I also decided to incorporate these too. The blooms showcased our purple and ivory colour scheme perfectly.

Our big day: Penelope and Bernhard: Image 8aWe had our first dance to a song entitled Come Home With Me by the South African band Watershed. This song means a lot to both of us and Bernie first played it to me when we started dating.

Our big day: Penelope and Bernhard: Image 8 My favourite part of the day was when I saw Penny arrive at the church. I was also touched that all of our friends and family were there to celebrate with us as the majority of people had to travel a long way.

We were so relieved everything ran smoothly and we had lots of guests saying how much they enjoyed themselves.

The day after our wedding we flew to the Maldives for seven nights, as neither of us had been there before, it was so relaxing. We also stopped off in Dubai for three nights which was excellent.
