Emma and Suraj's romance started when the couple first met at work after Emma received her nursing qualification and started working at a new hospital. Little did she know one doctor called Suraj would make a huge impact on her life and become her future. The pair instantly clicked and from that moment their love grew and blossomed into a beautiful relationship.
On a surprise birthday trip to Reykjavik, the couple saw stunning sites and landmarks of Iceland but one moment stood out the most. After a romantic candlelit dinner, the pair set off for an evening stroll and stopped right in front of the Hallgrimskirkja – a Lutheran parish church. Suraj got down on one knee and proposed to Emma, a beautiful moment the pair can always treasure.
Here Emma tells us more about their special day...
We got married in our local parish church aswe love historical venues and have many fond memories of the village of Harborne from the early years of our relationship. On the first visit we were blown away by the welcoming nature of the community and the building itself looked like the perfect setting.
Our wedding reception took place at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens where we would often visit whilst dating. Being a summer wedding, we wanted the wedding theme to reflect the bright, loud and energetic vibes of a new start together.
We used a bold and bright mix of flowers and balloons to decorate the venue, as a mixed culture couple we thought this would represent the vibrancy and joy of both of our cultures coming together.
We wanted every guest to feel special, so for place names we had polaroid photos printed of each guest to mark their seat on the tables.
Even the cake contained edible flowers to go with the theme!
Our wedding favours were a pin-badge from the British Heart Foundation along with a donation in every guest's name as a way of remembering loved ones on the day
As a couple, we love to travel and need no excuse to go on holiday. We have so many places that play an important part in our relationship, so it made sense to name each table after them.
I wore a princess-style Anna Solano dresswith long sleeves and a diamante belt, whichwas exactly what I had imagined wearing onmy wedding day since a young child.
Suraj's cufflinks were custom-made and a gift from me exactlya year before the wedding date.
The bridesmaids wore pale blue sequin dresses and carried bright, colourful bouquets to match with the theme.
The groom wore a three-piece suit and an ivory waistcoat to match my wedding dress with a pale blue tie to match the bridesmaids' dresses.
My friends and family joined in on some Garba, a form of traditional Indian dance and I got to show off some new Bollywood moves I learnt when visiting India earlier this year.
We had a DJ who did such an excellent job of keeping the dancefloor buzzing with popular songs played from both Western and Bollywood genres.
Nothing can prepare you for the overwhelming feeling of gratitude and love when you see a room full of all your nearest and dearest.
Suraj was the most nervous out of the two of us, even more than any of his medical exams. However, I felt a lot more relaxed having already calmed my nerves a few days before during our Hindu wedding ceremony.
It's never too early to start planning your wedding. We started planning ours from the moment we got engaged and this allowed us to sort all the fine details and personal touches – we wanted to make guests feel extra special.
Ensure you have delegated tasks to the bridesmaids and groomsmen before, during and after the wedding. Common tasks include collecting decorations from the venue, arranging dry cleaning for the wedding dress and collecting the groomsmen suits if hired. This will save a lot of stress and time when you're just keen to go on the honeymoon and start your married life together!
