A midsummer's dream

Jake and Frida wove Swedish tradition throughout their June big day

Having met at university, Frida and Jake first bonded over a shared love of classical music, travelling and popular sitcom Benidorm – solid grounds for a friendship, we're sure you'll agree. So it's no wonder that their relationship blossomed into something more, culminating with Jake dropping to one knee on a mountaintop during a ski trip with friends in early 2017.

The couple took a fairly relaxed approach to planning, allowing themselves a good two years to prepare for their nuptials, starting with the hunt for the perfect venue. "We wanted a venue that didn't charge for corkage and had a late curfew. This significantly narrowed down our options but, when we went to see The Chainstore, we knew it was the right place straight away," explains Jake. Here, he tells us more about their big day…

A midsummer's dream: Image 1 The Chainstore has a converted warehouse vibe with a private terrace next to the River Thames. It was a great setting for photos and the drinks reception and the view over Canary Wharf and the O2 at night was amazing

Frida is Swedish and we married on Swedish midsummer so our favours were heart-shaped bottles of Swedish snaps and our centrepieces featured jars filled with flowers, plants and a Swedish midsummer maypole.

I wanted to keep my look casual so I wore a waistcoat and tie with a white shirt – and rolled the sleeves up. Our son, Hugo, was dressed in a waistcoat and trousers to match the groomsmen, while Frida wore a blue and white dress accessorised with a traditional flower crown.

Our cake was incredible – four tiers draped with macarons and flowers to fit with our overarching navy, white and green colour scheme by Whisk & Drizzle.

We named our tables after places we've travelled to together – our tableplan was a world map.

Our caterers were fantastic – what's more they doubled as coordinators on the day, which was really helpful.

Our band, Born To Boogie, lived up to its name. The performance was really interactive and audience participation encouraged.

My groomsmen wore three-piece suits in light grey; even my sister, who was the 'best man', donned a matching outfit.

The whole day had a real party feel – our bridesmaids sang a full rendition of Abba's Mamma Mia, with the lyrics tailored to Frida and me – the whole room erupted into song.

A midsummer's dream: Image 6 Our photographer was so helpful. We met her a few months prior to the wedding and she helped us to list out all the major elements of the day that we wanted her to capture. We were so happy with the final result.
