Flower power

Posted by Danielle Harvey on 4 January 2023

Childhood sweethearts Ella and Ben met at school and became best friends, hanging out together and chatting online most evenings.

By the age of 14, they were boyfriend and girlfriend and have been together ever since. "Ben has always made me laugh and I adore him for that," says Ella.

Happy Couple Ben proposed on Ella's graduation day in October 2018. "After the formal part we had a small family celebration and as my dad raised a glass to toast my success, Ben came back from the car with a large bouquet of red roses and the ring box which he had sneakily hidden.

He then proceeded to get down on one knee and ask me to marry him, surrounded by our loved ones with a Michael Bublé song playing in the background.

It was a complete surprise and my cousin videoed the moment so I can relive it time and time again," reveals Ella.

Horse

When it came to choosing where to wed, there was only ever one place in the running – The Jockey Club Rooms in Newmarket.

Ella was already familiar with the venue from working with her mum in their family floristry business Langton Flowers in Mildenhall. "We are a recommended supplier and provide the flowers for all their horse racing events," she explains.

Exterior

"From my first visit there, before our engagement was even on the cards, I knew it was the one!

The history and grandeur of the place, combined with the warm, homely feel and the staff and service provided, would make anyone feel like royalty!"

Bride & Groom

Ella also bagged her dream dress early on but wasn't able to wear it until three years and three postponements later due to the pandemic!

Thankfully, she chose a classic, timeless style – an ivory, mikado satin ballgown by Stella York (style number 6758) with a plunging V neckline.

She says, "When I finally knew we were getting married, I looked for accessories to personalise it and discovered a statement belt with beautiful floral details and beadwork which was the perfect finishing touch," Ella explains.

Bridal party

She also wore a cathedral-length veil for the ceremony and glitter heels, which she later swapped for a pair of white high top Converse. "Best decision I ever made!" she laughs. "I was comfortable all day, it was easy moving about the grounds for photos and I got to dance all night long."

Ben and his groomsmen wore smart, dark navy morning suits with dark green ties and pocket squares. To stand out from the rest of the gang, Ben had a grey tweed waistcoat and horseprint braces in a nod to them getting married in Newmarket – the home of horse racing.

The two bridesmaids completed the elegant look in hunter green satin, fit-and-flare gowns.

Table setting Rather than having a specific theme or colour scheme they concentrated on the things they love combining a mix of beautiful hues to complement the setting and season with dark hunter green, the venue's signature shade, as the main focus.

Bridal bouquet

With their floristry roots, flowers were always going to be one of the big wow-factor features of the day. From the entrance to the ceremony and all three reception rooms, they were blooming everywhere!

Ella explains, "We wanted to channel Bridgerton vibes through the floral arrangements. Each room at the venue has a slightly different colour palette and we wanted to reflect that through our choice of blooms.

For the wedding breakfast we used peach, creams and ivory shades to sit alongside the pale wood-panelled walls.

Flowers

In the silver-lilac wallpapered ceremony room we had two statement pedestal arrangements and swathed the mantles in shades of lilac, pale pink, cerise and blue.

For the bar and lounge area we used jewel tones of red, purple, plum and coral to stand out against the burnt red and mustard furnishings.

We also ventured outside, using the existing columns at the grand entrance to create a feature archway with large urns filled with summer blooms on the terrace."

Reception For the wedding breakfast, they adorned the tables with wonderfully loose and romantic floral designs combining large displays on silver plinths with pillar candles in glass cylinders underneath and low-level arrangements in pearlised ceramic bowls.

Cake

Their statement four-tier cake was a stunning showpiece featuring dark green to white ombre icing and gold-leaf detailing with a small floral posy on top and a large circlet of matching blooms below.

The laser-cut caketopper featured the title of the Etta James hit At Last. "It was the song I walked down the aisle to in recognition of our long-awaited wedding day," adds Ella

Favours

Instead of traditional favours they gave their guests cards printed with a watercolour painting of their pet pooch adopted from the Dogs Trust, with a commemorative pin in aid of the charity.

"Inside we had a poem explaining the reasons behind them, and what it meant to us," adds Ella.

Games
Magician

Loved ones were entertained throughout the day with garden games during the drinks reception, while talented magician Matthew Le Mottée mixed and mingled, causing plenty of chat and amazement with his amazing magic.

During the evening a caricaturist kept the atmosphere buzzing with his comic sketches. "The drawings not only made our guests giggle but provided a unique keepsake of our special day to take home with them," adds Ella.

It was a gorgeous evening and while the disco got the party vibes going, loved ones were also able to take time out from the dancefloor to chill out on the terrace.

Dancing "I think I almost used up all my stress through planning and reorganising the wedding, so on the day I just felt relieved it was finally here and almost in disbelief. Although there were still some butterflies, once those initial jitters had gone, we relaxed and had the best time ever!' - Ella.
