39 DOING IT FOR THE KIDS I love how Rachel and Lewis thought about keeping the little ones entertained during their wedding breakfast 27 LIVING IN A BUBBLE I’m not sure that was what groom Jack was expecting when he was offered bubbles at his wedding to wife Faye! Is it me, or does it only seem like yesterday that we were ringing in 2022? Suddenly the nights have well and truly drawn in and the heating is very much switched on – and with it there goes a huge portion of your wedding budget. Energy bill jokes aside, I, for one, love this time of year. OK, so you can no longer enjoy a beer garden afternoon with your mates, but instead you get to snuggle together with your intended on the sofa, glass of red in hand, talking of your hopes and dreams for the future. And, if you’re reading this, that means your current hopes and dreams are all things wedding – so let’s get cracking with planning the best day of your lives! Starting on page 15, we’ve six pages of gorgeous North East wedding venues for you to discover, from County Durham’s finest, to hotels where you can say your vows before bedding down for the night. Next, head over to page 45 for all your wedding transport needs, before flicking to our regional spread on wedding fashion suppliers you’ve simply got to approach for your big day (p57). Finally, speaking of big days, I can’t sign off until I’ve mentioned my cousin Jade’s wedding to his wife Simone, which you can read about in all its glory over on page 32. See if you can spot me laughing with my husband and the groom with my multitude of tiny chins – I should have kept my guard well and truly up knowing the photographers were on the prowl! Happy wedding planning – see you in 2023… Claire x Claire Muffett-Reece, Editor Where has the year gone? www.jamesaugustusphotography.com 88 WIN! SPOTLIGHT ON… MARK LLOYD MASTER GOLDSMITH Mark Lloyd, an international master goldsmith and fellow of The Institute of Professional Goldsmiths, is preparing for the Christmas rush from his Hartlepool jewellery store. With over 36 years of experience, Mark is now recognised as one of the best jewellery designers, making bespoke commissions for clients around the world. Due to his popularity, throughout December you’ll see him opening his store from 9am-6pm, rather than 9am-5pm, on the 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd of the month. “Most people work from 9am-5pm, so visiting the shop during opening times is impossible for many,” says Mark. “This gives customers the opportunity to come in outside of their working day.” Mark and his team will also be offering a voucher code that runs from 22nd November to the 17th December, so be sure to follow them on social media to stay updated with the sales they’ll be running. Engaged couples searching for somewhere to tie the knot should consider Newcastle’s Great North Hotel, which opened its doors to the public last year following a £7.5m development. Now welcoming weddings, it boasts a purpose-built function suite and three packages designed to relieve couples of all the pressure of planning. Central to the hotel’s appeal for wedding parties is its Ouseburn Suite, with private bar, which can cater for between 25 and 80 guests and can be sub-divided to create a smaller space for more intimate celebrations. To aid couples planning their event, the venue has created bronze, silver and gold price packages, all of which include hire of the suite, reception drinks and a three-course wedding breakfast. Also included are a DJ and LED dancefloor, evening buffet, red carpet, and overnight accommodation for the bride and groom in one of the hotel’s suites following the wedding. Packages start from £2,950, with the hotel also offering bespoke wedding packages. Visit www.greatnorthhotel.co.uk/weddings-at-great-north-hotel for more information. The ballroom also opens out onto picturesque-landscaped gardens, perfect for drinks and canapés in the sun. Speaking of the warmer months, in summer couples can exchange their vows under an ornate garden pagoda, as up to 160 friends and family look on from their seating on the wedding lawns. of love Faye and Jack’s treehouse wedding was magical from start to finish Images courtesy of Paul Liddement Wedding Stories THE ACT Faye and Jack met at London’s West End Stage drama school back in 2012. “Despite it not being love at first sight, we became close friends quite quickly and enjoyed spending time together,” says Faye. “It was only after a year of being friends that we became a couple, and the rest, as they say, is history.” Jack proposed on a trip to Paris to celebrate Faye’s 21st birthday. “We went to Le Train Bleu for a fancy meal before going up the Eiffel Tower,” continues the bride. “I could tell that Jack was nervous, which is unusual, as he’s usually relaxed. We got to the top, and, while looking across the skyline, Jack got down on one knee and proposed. I’d hoped that he would ask me to marry him, but when it happened I was overwhelmed! It was an amazing day and made my 21st very special.” The couple set the date for the 22nd April, 2022, marrying at Alnwick Garden Treehouse. Here, Faye tells us more about their big day… Scan to view video 27 REAL WEDDINGS

We decided to incorporate a ‘rose ceremony’ as p art of our marriage, where the mother of the bride and groom place a rose in to a vase to symbolise the joining of families. After the wedding, we used the roses to remember my late Nan and my friend Paul, who sadly passed during the pandemic. I carried a bouquet of roses, peonies, freesia, delphiniums, thistle and eucalyptus, along with some white peacock feathers. My bridesmaids wore wrist corsages with roses, gypsophila, thistle and greenery, fixed on pearl bracelets and finished with peacock feathers and cream ribbon. My dress was Madi Lane Bridal’s Bronte design, a floral lace A-line gown with sweetheart neckline and off the shoulder detail. I accessorised with a jewelled peacock feather comb over a chapellength veil; a diamond pendant given to me by my Great Aunt; and a sapphire and diamond ring given to me by my late Nan. The centrepieces were made by my mum, using birdcages and filling them with faux flowers and peacock feathers. We also had sweet jars of pic ’n’ mix for guests to enjoy, while rose scented candles gave the venue a gorgeous aroma. We placed a stepladder in the corner of the venu e, with pictures of our parents’ and grandparents’ wedding days, plus one of ourselves getting engaged. This was important to both of us, hono uring family members who were no longer around to see us get married. We decided a treehouse would be a fun venue to get married in, so travelled three hours up to Alnwick hoping it wo uld be where we said, ‘I do’. It was idyllic – so we booked it there and then! 28

We hired a bubbleologist as part of the entertain ment – and are so glad we did! The pictures look spectacular and gave our day a whimsical feel. Jesse made incredible shapes and entertained guests b y putting them in bubbles! We hired the band Borderland to play at our we dding, who performed everything from the 1950s to present day music. They also learned our first dance song, Falling Slowly from the musical Once , as well as Still the One by Shania Twain, for my dance with my mum. My two bridesmaids wore maxi-length forest green dresses with off the shoulder detail and a ruffled split shoulder sleeve. Both ladies also wore a 1920s-style peacock feather clip in their hair, to tie the look together. Jack looked incredible in his three-piece Marc Darcy suit and tan broguestyle shoes. I also bought him some commissioned cufflinks as a wedding gift to represent his maternal grandparents, who are no longer with us. Jack’s two groomsmen wore their own suits but with forest green ties and cufflinks. We wanted to make sure that they felt comfortable and happy in what they wore, yet had key elements to match us and our theme. For transport, we hired a beautiful 1920s-style Regent Landaulette, decorated with ivory ribbons and floral decoratio ns. It fitted our vintage souls perfectly, and I felt like royalty travelling to the venue! Jack and I wanted something different to a traditional cake, choosing cake popsicles, cupcakes and geo hearts, which were pretty but also practical for COVID guidelines. Instead of cutting the cake, we did a pop toast with our arms linked. 29 REAL WEDDINGS

I loved the fact that we did things unconventionally, such as having my grandad as our flower man, and my father in law being referred to as ‘The Lord of the Rings’, instead of the ring bearer. Those little touches made us smile and reflected our love story perfectly. It was amazing having a smaller, more intimate wedding, as we had all of our nearest and dearest celebrating with us. 30

love Who’d have thought a dog walk would lead to Simone and Jade’s happily ever after? Images courtesy of Michael G Shaw Photography PUPPY 32

Simone met Jade while out walking their dogs. “Jade had two foxhounds, Marley and Cruiser, and I have two jackhuahuas, Rupert and Hugo,” says the bride. “We often stopped to talk to each other, but it was a few years before we found ourselves single at the same time, arranging to take a walk along the beach for our first date. We’d only been seeing each other for a couple of months when lockdown hit, which resulted in me being furloughed from my job. Jade continued to work full-time, so I agreed to stay at his to look after the dogs as his usual walker couldn’t visit. It’s fair to say lockdown speeded up our relationship!” The couple didn’t intend on getting married at first, as they’d both been hurt in previous relationships. “One day I mentioned to Jade that I’d seen a stunning pre-loved 18 carat yellow gold emerald and diamond ring at the company I work for,” continues Simone. “It was quite close to Christmas, so Jade asked me if I’d like it as a present. I said no, as it was an engagement ring – so Jade replied with, ‘well, let’s get married then!’ All of our friends and family were over the moon, as they could see how in love we were and felt we should have always been together.” The couple set the date for the 9th July, 2022, choosing Great Ayton’s Howard Court for their big day. Here, Simone tells us more about their amazing wedding… OUR DAY, OUR WAY When it came to choosing a venue, it was important for Simone and Jade that their guests didn’t travel far. “In the end we only looked at Howard Court, as we knew straight away that it was right for us,” says Simone. “It was a very new venue and didn’t even have bathrooms installed at the time, but the owners had big plans for it – and we could see their vision. By the time our big day arrived it had been transformed into a stunning venue! We were also able to have the entire space to ourselves from Friday lunchtime until Sunday afternoon, with our families staying in the on-site cottage and two shepherds’ huts.” With Howard Court being a blank canvas venue, the couple were able to choose their own suppliers and decorate as they wanted. “I loved this side of the planning and painted our ‘Welcome’ canvas myself,” says Simone. “I also decorated the venue the day before with a beach theme in mind. I used lots of white muslin runners, pearl cluster string lights, glass tea lights and scented candles on the tables, along with glass cylinder vases filled with roses and sea thistle, as well as white pillar candles and seashells. Outside, we used lots of storm lanterns, along with glasses filled with pink and white roses, baby’s breath and greenery.” RING AND RING AND ROSES Simone left choosing their wedding florist in her fiancé’s hands. “We used The Flower Box in Guisborough as that’s where Jade regularly buys me flowers from,” continues the bride. “I didn’t carry a bouquet, choosing a white orchid wrist corsage instead. My mum, Jade’s mam and my bridesmaids had wrist corsages of white roses, while the men wore white rose buttonholes. We also made our own rose petal confetti, collected and dried by my wonderful mum and dad from their garden. My neighbour’s daughter held the basket and made sure all of our guests had a handful ready to throw.” When it came to weddings bands, Simone didn’t have far to look. “I work for Middlesbrough jewellery and finance company, Ramsdens, so was lucky enough to get our rings designed and made,” she says. “I opted for an 18 carat yellow gold band with half hoop diamonds, while Jade and I designed his ring together, incorporating our love of the beach – and his love of surfing. His platinum band features a sand effect on one half; etched in the centre with a wave; with the other half smooth like the sea.” 33 REAL WEDDINGS

IT’S ALL IN THE NAME As Simone’s only four feet 10 inches, she wanted a dress that complemented her shape. “I was looking for a design that was simple and classic, while still highlighting my curves,” she says. “I found my Stella York dress in the Joanne Kay Bridal Boutique, initially only going there because my mum’s called Kay – and my best friend’s called Joanne! As soon as I put it on, I knew it was the dress for me. I then went to award-winning milliner, Lynne Young, for my bespoke hat. I gave her a brief of keeping it simple, but with a birdcage veil. She sourced a crystal moon and star to add a touch of sparkle, which was also a nod to what Jade and I messaged each other every night before we moved in together – ‘I love you to the moon and stars’.” Jade also looked the part on their big day, heading to Middlesbrough’s Bakers Bespoke Tailoring. “The owner, Paul, is a close friend, and has been in the business for over 40 years,” says Simone. “He measured Jade to perfection – and the fit was incredible. Jade wanted a slim Sixties ‘mod’ style, choosing a beautiful blue two tone fabric. He teamed it with a classic navy polka dot silk tie and handkerchief, bespoke Cuban heeled boots, and silver cufflinks, which were a gift from my parents. He also carried his mam and dad’s wedding rings in his pocket for luck. Jade’s dad, Peter, passed away a few years ago, so I never got to meet him. Having his dad’s wedding ring close to Jade’s heart was important to us both.” EAT AND GREET Food was another important element of Simone and Jade’s wedding. “Jade’s school friend, Matthew, is a professional caterer, and he nailed our buffet perfectly,” continues the bride. “Our friends and family enjoyed a delicious spread of salad and pasta dishes, seafood, Italian meats and artisan breads, along with a very popular hog roast. Jade also has a very sweet tooth – so I had to make sure that was catered for! We hired an old-fashioned ice cream bicycle, getting all of the kids invited to choose the flavours they wanted before the big day. We also had a rustic wooden cart filled with pic ’n’ mix sweets to enjoy, while our delicious wedding cake – three tiers of vanilla, lemon and chocolate orange – kept guests satisfied throughout the remainder of the evening.” A good selection of drinks was also readily available in the form of Redcarbased horsebox bar, Mr Bentley’s. “Carole and June, who run the bar with their husbands, are friends from my running group,” says Simone. “Welcome drinks included Pimm’s, pink prosecco and bottles of alcoholic and non-alcoholic lager, which went down a treat. They even gave our cocktails names associated with us and our dogs!” Then there were the other nods to the couple’s fur babies throughout Simone and Jade’s wedding. “Our invitations featured our boys sitting on the beach, and were beautifully illustrated by a local artist,” continues Simone. “She even gave us the original picture as a wedding present, which is now hanging in our living room. Our oldest dog, Marley, was quite poorly at the time, and we were so grateful that he still made it to our wedding. A couple of months later he finally went to sleep, and it means the absolute world to us that he was with us on the best day of our lives.” LET’S PARTY When it came to keeping their guests entertained Simone and Jade made sure that both children and adults were catered for. “I found a fabulous local company in Middlesbrough, Stargazers Tepee & Event Hire, who set up a beautiful bell tent for the kids to enjoy,” says the bride. “They filled it with plenty of cushions, throws, bunting and lights. It was incredibly popular with the little ones – and some of the older ones later on, too! We also hired a magician, Marc Dominic Thompson, who was a great addition to the day – and a real surprise for our guests. He kept everyone mesmerised with his card tricks and sleight of hand illusions.” The choice of music the couple wanted for their big day was also a vital part of their celebrations. “Alan, the DJ, is another of Jade’s friends, so we always knew he’d be the one for us,” says Simone. “He put together an amazing playlist of Northern soul, funk and old disco classics, which had our friends and family dancing all night. We also had our first dance to Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together, which was very fitting, as it’s what Jade played to me when he first asked me to be his girlfriend.” REAL WEDDINGS 35
