And it seems it’s not just a favourite with me, as it’s becoming an increasingly popular time of year to get married. So, what’s so great about these months when it comes to tying the knot? For a start, the temperature is a lot more favourable. Even though it’s still warm during September, the heat has a friendlier feel about it, rather than the oppressive temperatures of summer. Then, moving into October and November, we have the cosy atmosphere created by roaring fires and candlelight, along with the stunning natural backdrops as the colours start to change to rich shades of amber and gold. I adore the new, imaginative palettes couples are coming up with for their autumn nuptials. For 2026, the trend is moving away from predictable burnt orange and burgundy towards richer, more nuanced palettes featuring earthy neutrals, jewel tones and unexpected pops of colour. Browns have become a key feature rather than just an accent, while plum, olive and espresso is emerging as a standout combination. I hope you’ll find plenty of wedspiration in this issue, whatever time of year you’ve chosen for your wedding. As ever, enjoy and keeeep planning! Kelly Andrews, editor Shades of autumn Kelly x On the cover This issue’s cover is sponsored by The Bedford Hotel (bedford-hotel.co.uk) located in the heart of the Devon market town of Tavistock. Fashioned with care Somerset-based Mya Rose is a contemporary British bridal label founded by designer Claire Riley, creating made-to-order gowns designed for stylish brides who want to feel like themselves on their wedding day. The debut collection explores the relationship between strength and softness. Architectural lines are softened by fluid draping, while sculptural silhouettes sit alongside romantic textures and delicate detailing. Embroidered lace, soft satins and sheer silks are layered to create depth, movement and quiet luxury. For Claire, sustainability was a non-negotiable from the beginning. Mya Rose therefore takes a slow-impact approach, with fabrics sourced using natural or recycled fibres and certifications whenever possible. Every gown is made to order in the UK, helping to avoid overproduction and reduce unnecessary waste. Keep your eyes out for the next issue of Your South West Wedding, where we’ll be bringing you a peek at the collection. In the meantime, find out more at mya-rose.com or discover the brand at brownsoftotnes.co.uk Sweet treats Fudge Kitchen has launched elegant envelope fudge favours for weddings. A beautifully wrapped, handcrafted sweet treat, they’re designed to add colour, personality and a little indulgence to the modern wedding table. Priced at £4.95 per favour, there are discounts available on orders of 150 favours or more. Find out more at fudgekitchen.co.uk or visit your nearest store in Bath. Forty years of never-ending stories Bath-founded Wylde Jewellers is beginning a year of celebrations ahead of its 40th anniversary, inviting clients, families and the local community to become part of its story. From its beginnings in 1987, Wylde has grown to include stores and on-site jewellery workshops in both Bath and Clifton, Bristol. The company even launched its very own patented diamond cut, the Wylde Flower Diamond®, available exclusively through the jeweller. Throughout the anniversary year, Never Ending Stories will bring together the past, present and future of Wylde through the theme – Past. Present. Possibility. Over the coming months a series of anniversary stories, activities and special moments will be revealed, with plenty of opportunities for clients and the wider community to take part, from now until 12th September 2027, the big day. “Our story may have started in Bath in 1987, but it was never ours alone,” says founder Nicholas Wylde. “Every person who has walked through our doors, every member of our team who has worked at the bench and every piece of jewellery that has become part of somebody’s life has added another chapter.” Find out more at nicholaswylde.com AUTUMN FUN Summer may be over, but National Trust isn’t applying the brakes! The Instagram effect ON WEDDING VENUES How social media is reshaping the industry In an era where a single photograph can reach millions of viewers within hours, wedding venues are experiencing a seismic shift in how they attract couples and showcase their spaces. Instagram has evolved from a simple photo-sharing app into the most powerful marketing tool the wedding industry has ever seen and it’s fundamentally changing what couples look for in a venue. We spoke with Nick from Country House Weddings (countryhouseweddings. co.uk) to explore how social media, particularly Instagram and TikTok is reshaping venue selection, design, and the entire wedding experience. THE RISE OF INSTAGRAM-WORTHY VENUES “Ten years ago, couples primarily chose venues based on capacity, location, and price,” explains Nick “Today, the first question whether said or not is really: ‘How Instagram-worthy is it?’. The visual appeal of a space has become just as important, and sometimes more important than traditional practical considerations.” This shift reflects a broader change in how couples approach their weddings. The ceremony and reception are no longer private family affairs but shareable content that will be viewed, liked, and commented on by hundreds to thousands of people. As a result, venues with distinctive architectural features, dramatic backdrops, and photogenic details have seen demand skyrocket. “Country houses, venues with statement staircases, and spaces with abundant natural light are particularly popular,” Nick notes. “These environments photograph beautifully and provide those ‘wow’ moments that translate perfectly to social media, without overwhelming the couple.” HOW VENUES ARE ADAPTING TO INSTAGRAM CULTURE Smart venue owners are responding to this Instagram-driven demand by strategically enhancing their spaces with social media in mind. According to Nick, this goes far beyond simply having pretty spaces. “To accommodate, many spaces have invested in designated ‘photo opportunities’ throughout the properties,” he explains. “This might be a swing hanging from an ancient oak tree or a flower wall that’s refreshed seasonally. These aren’t just decorative, rather they’re carefully designed Instagram moments that if well done, look completely natural and spontaneous.” THE POWER OF USER-GENERATED CONTENT Perhaps the most significant impact of Images sourced from unsplash.com 16

Instagram on wedding venues is the rise of user-generated content as a marketing powerhouse. Traditional advertising has been largely replaced by the authentic images newlyweds share from their big- day celebrations. “When a couple posts photos from their wedding and tags our venue, they’re essentially providing a testimonial to their entire network,” says Nick. “That organic reach is invaluable. We’ve had couples book with us purely because they saw a friend’s wedding photos on Instagram and fell in love with the space.” Many venues now actively encourage this user-generated content by creating unique hashtags, offering incentives for tagging the venue, and even featuring couples’ photos on their official accounts. This creates a symbiotic relationship: couples get the pleasure of being featured on a popular wedding venue account, while venues benefit from fresh, authentic content that resonates with prospective couples. THE PRESSURE TO PERFORM: WHEN INSTAGRAM EXPECTATIONS MEET REALITY While Instagram has created tremendous opportunities for venues, it has also introduced new challenges and pressures. Nick is candid about the potential downsides. “We’ve noticed that some couples spend so much time planning for the perfect Instagram shots that they forget to actually enjoy their wedding,” he observes. “There’s pressure to recreate specific aesthetics they’ve seen online, sometimes at the expense of what they genuinely want or what works best for their celebration.” “Our role has evolved to include managing these expectations,” Nick explains. “We show couples how to achieve beautiful photos while maintaining authenticity and ensuring they don’t sacrifice the experience for the content.” SEASONAL AESTHETICS AND TRENDING STYLES Instagram has dramatically accelerated the pace of wedding trend cycles. Styles that once remained popular for years now shift seasonally, driven by what’s currently performing well on social media. “We’ve seen rustic barn weddings give way to minimalist industrial spaces, which then evolved into romantic garden parties, and now we’re in an era of maximalist, moody aesthetics,” notes Nick. “Each shift is directly traceable to what’s trending on Instagram and other visual platforms.” The most successful venues, according to Nick, are those with classic, versatile spaces that can be dressed to match current trends rather than those locked into a specific style. THE DEMOCRATISATION OF VENUE DISCOVERY On the positive side, Instagram has democratised venue discovery in ways that benefit both couples and venues. Previously, couples typically found venues through traditional advertising, wedding fairs, or word-of-mouth recommendations, which heavily favoured established venues with large marketing budgets. “Instagram has levelled the playing field,” says Nick. “A smaller, boutique venue with beautiful spaces and strong visual content can now compete with major established venues.” SOCIAL MEDIA 17

VIRTUAL VENUE TOURS AND DIGITALFIRST EXPERIENCES Instagram has also transformed how couples initially explore venues. The traditional approach of booking in-person tours of multiple locations has been supplemented and sometimes replaced by digital discovery. “Couples now typically do extensive Instagram research before even contacting us,” Nick explains. “They’ve already ‘experienced’ the venue through our feed, stories, highlights, and reels. By the time they reach out, they have a clear vision of whether our space fits their aesthetic.” It also requires savvy venues to keep their social media game strong and vibrant. THE ECONOMICS OF INSTAGRAMDRIVEN DEMAND The Instagram effect has had tangible economic impacts on wedding venues. Properties that successfully leverage social media have seen significant increases in booking inquiries. This creates a new challenge: venues must continuously invest in creating fresh, engaging content to maintain visibility in Instagram’s algorithm-driven environment, requiring ongoing resources for photography, content creation, and social media management. INFLUENCER WEDDINGS AND ASPIRATIONAL CONTENT The rise of influencer culture has created a new category of high-profile weddings that serve as both personal celebrations and branded content opportunities. For venues, hosting an influencer wedding can provide unprecedented exposure. “When we host a wedding for a couple with a significant social media following, we know that kind of exposure would cost a fortune in traditional advertising. Some venues even offer discounted rates to influencers specifically for this marketing.” But this dynamic also raises questions about authenticity and the commercialisation of weddings. The line between personal celebration and content creation becomes blurred when sponsors, product placements, and promotional partnerships enter the picture. LOOKING AHEAD: THE FUTURE OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND VENUES As social media continues to evolve, Nick anticipates further changes in how venues market themselves and what couples prioritise. “We’re already seeing a shift toward video content with the rise of TikTok and Instagram reels,” he notes. “Venues need to think beyond static images and consider how their spaces translate to short-form video. We’re also noticing a counter-movement of couples who want ‘unplugged’ weddings where guests aren’t constantly on their phones. The pendulum may swing back toward more private, intimate celebrations.” Nick also predicts that virtual and augmented reality tools will become more sophisticated, potentially allowing couples to virtually ‘walk through’ venue spaces and visualise their weddings before booking. This could further reduce the need for in-person venue visits while raising expectations for accessible digital presentation. FINDING BALANCE IN THE DIGITAL AGE “Instagram has fundamentally transformed the wedding venue industry, mostly for the better,” concludes Nick. “The most successful weddings are those where couples use Instagram for inspiration and venue discovery but ultimately make choices based on what feels right for them. A beautiful Instagram feed is wonderful, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of genuine connection, personal meaning, or the joy of being present in your own celebration.” 18

Flowers, fanfare and FIREWORKS Navy and pink florals, show-stopping music and a spectacular fireworks finale brought Abigail and Matthew’s elegant celebration to life Images courtesy of Paul Aston Photography For Abigail and Matthew, what started with a cheeky message on Hinge quickly turned into coffee dates, lazy Sundays in country pubs and long walks that somehow always ended with a glass of wine or a pint. Before long, they each realised they’d found their forever person and couldn’t wait to make it official! On the way home from a spa trip one day, Matthew suggested they pay a visit to their favourite beach, Oxwich Bay, for a walk. Abigail started to suspect something might not be all as it seemed when Matthew kept insisting he needed his coat despite it being 24 degrees out. During their walk, Matthew challenged Abigail to a race up a sand dune. “When I got to the top, I turned around happy I’d won, to find him down on one knee, pulling the ring box from his coat pocket,” Abigail remembers. “Safe to say it was the best surprise I’ve ever had.” For the couple, Clevedon Hall had the wow factor, and both got that gut feeling telling them it was the one. “From the gorgeous lavender outside to the beauty of the building, and the use of various rooms to help the day flow nicely, it was truly stunning,” Abigail explains. By her own admission, Abigail struggled to envision what she truly wanted in terms of a look for the wedding. Consequently, the only brief she felt able to give her florist and stylist was “pretty with lots of flowers.” Happily, the team was able to run with it, creating bouquets in a variety of pinks. The stationery suite was navy with pink and white writing, while the centrepieces featured flowers to match the bouquets. A rose arch used at the end of the aisle and behind the top table proved to be the perfect focal point. The bride wore Ollie by Made With Love Bridal. She’d discovered the designer while shopping with her best friend for her wedding dress in 2024 and knew that when it was her turn she’d have to explore the collection. “Ollie was the first dress I tried on, and I felt amazing in it. Most importantly, it felt like me but also made me feel special,” Abigail says. Matthew wore a custom-made two-piece tuxedo to suit the evening-chic vibe, while his groomsmen were dressed to match. The bridesmaids were elegant in navy stretch-satin dresses. Guests were entertained throughout the day by music – and lots of it! The day began with a bagpiper playing in the courtyard to greet guests. “Matt and I knew from our getting-ready rooms that it was really happening once we heard him playing,” Abigail remembers. Before and during the ceremony, a harpist played some of the couple’s favourite songs, and just before the bridal party walked down the aisle, military State Trumpeters played a fanfare. Then, as the newlyweds signed the register, the harpist performed a piece written by the bride’s father. During the confetti toss, the bagpiper resumed his playing, which was followed by a military brass quintet performing a range of hits from the musicals during the drinks reception. The evening’s celebrations were kicked off in style by live band Tux Fizz. “No one wanted to leave the dancefloor – they were so good!” Abigail remembers. Abigail’s highlight of the day was marrying Matthew, of course! “Nothing will ever beat the moment of seeing him standing at the end of the aisle,” she shares. A very close second for them both, though, is the firework display set to music. “I just remember thinking in that moment that life couldn’t get any better,” the bride concludes. REAL WEDDINGS 21

From fairway to forever Kate and Thomas included a host of nods to the groom’s golfing passion in their big day Images courtesy of Younger Photography REAL WEDDINGS 27

Thomas proposed to Kate while taking their beloved dog for a walk. Having found the perfect spot on Tregantle Beach, he got down on one knee, and of course, Kate said “yes.” The couple wasted no time getting down to the planning. They knew they wanted to tie the knot somewhere close to home and decided the picturesque settings of St Eustachius church and The Bedford Hotel would be perfect. “The staff at The Bedford Hotel were so friendly from day one and made us feel completely at ease,” Kate remembers. Both sets of parents chose navy blue and gold as their wedding palette, so the couple felt it right to continue this family tradition. It also tied in beautifully with Thomas’ Royal Navy uniform. The groom is a keen golfer who competes nationally, so they leaned into this with their styling, including golf-themed table numbers and a find-your-playing-partners seating chart. They found other fun ways to tie in this passion too by nominating a captain for each table and giving them a golf visor with a few funny tasks to complete throughout the meal. The florals featured roses and gypsophila, with thistles as a nod to Scotland, where Thomas grew up. The bridesmaids’ and bride’s bouquets served double duty as centrepieces during the wedding breakfast, before being gifted to the couple’s four grandmothers during Kate’s speech. The food and drink had a relaxed, summery, South West vibe. Guests enjoyed Bucks Fizz and Thatchers Juicy Apple Cider welcome drinks, before an afternoon tea wedding breakfast was served. “It felt like a lighter opening for a summer wedding and a lovely choice as The Bedford Hotel is so well known for it,” Thomas explains. A buffet was served in the evening, and it wouldn’t be a Devon wedding without pasties! 28

The bride wore the vintage White Rose gown from Two For Joy. “It had exactly what I’d been looking for – sleeves and an elegant A-line shape,” Kate shares. It also matched her mum’s veil, which became her something borrowed. Kate changed into a second outfit for the evening, which she’d picked up through the boutique’s dress giveaway, and had it shortened, allowing her to dance comfortably. Thomas wore his Royal Navy No.1s uniform for the ceremony before changing into a suit to match his groomsmen for the evening. It was a hot day, so it was a good move to be prepared as he would have roasted in his uniform had he worn it all day! Guests were kept entertained with a host of activities. As well as the table captain games for the adults, Kate also put together wedding-themed activity books for the children and gifted them a small Lego set each. During the evening, one of their friends DJed for them while the photo booth produced plenty of funny pictures to look back on. One of the highlights for Kate was the first look with her dad and stepdad before the ceremony, then having them both walk her down the aisle. “It was such an emotional moment and meant so much to be able to include them both,” she says. Thomas’ memorable moment also features these gentlemen, as he enjoyed playing pool with them and his groomsmen in the morning. “It was a really relaxed way to spend some time together and settle the nerves,” he remembers. To end, the couple have some sound advice for you all: “There are so many little things to remember, so being able to tick them off a to-do list as we went made the whole process feel much more manageable. Breaking bigger jobs down into smaller tasks also helped us stay organised without feeling overwhelmed.” REAL WEDDINGS 29

The end OF PERFECT We explore how couples are falling out of love with perfection and choosing documentary wedding photography For more than a decade, as social media grew in popularity and became increasingly ingrained in our lives, so too did the desire for polished, Insta-worthy wedding shots. The ultimate goal was to secure images that belonged on the front cover of a luxury magazine. But rather than choosing between polished portraits and authentic moments, today’s couples increasingly want both. They’re looking for photographers who’ll capture their wedding day as it unfolds, rather than a series of carefully staged moments. The rise of documentary photography reflects a need for authenticity and presence, going hand-in-hand with the trend for ultra-personalised big days. Today, the perfect wedding album might include a tear-streaked face, hilarity on the dance floor or the youngest guests running with abandon through the venue’s grounds. FROM PINTEREST TO PRESENCE Social media and its resulting habit of doom-scrolling has caused many to reach the point of perfection fatigue. Today’s couples have grown up exposed to an endless parade of highly curated content from lifestyle to fashion, and of course weddings. Whereas the previous generation might have envisioned their wedding day in the form of scrapbooks, sketches and marked-up magazines, Gen Z-ers naturally gravitate to Pinterest, Instagram and TikTok for their wedspiration. After years spent in the pursuit of perfection, perhaps the pandemic and months spent in isolation reminded us of what matters most. When the wedding industry emerged from lockdown, the trend for more intimate, meaningful wedding days quickly became prevalent, and in the years that followed, this beating heart has remained even though we’re seeing guest numbers begin to grow once more. To reflect these personalised celebrations, there’s a growing demand for photography that showcases candid storytelling, genuine emotion and real moments. A recurring theme we see among our real wedding couples is that many have no desire to spend the moments following their ceremony posing for the camera with an endless parade of carefully planned guest groups. No, they’re far keener to get the party started, and why not? With a documentary photographer at the helm, there’s no need to fear a lack of captured memories of your nearest and dearest. Seeing themselves more as observers, they shoot moments of you and your guests as they unfold. It’s their job to be in the right place at the right time, with the camera pointing in the unsplash.com@jakobowens 38
