Rachel and Julian’s love story began with a swipe on Bumble. Sharing a mutual love of sushi, they chose Chotto Matte in Soho for their first date just a couple of weeks later – and it proved to be the start of something very special. Julian proposed during a romantic holiday in Mauritius in October 2024. As the sun set over the beach, he got down on one knee, creating the perfect backdrop for a proposal Rachel will never forget. From the outset, the couple knew they wanted a wedding venue that felt truly unique. “We wanted somewhere that our guests would never forget,” says Rachel. “From the moment we visited Port Lympne, we couldn’t stop thinking about it.” The grandeur of the Mansion House, sweeping views across the reserve and the beautiful Pergola and Orangery immediately captured their hearts. Having enclosed ceremony and reception spaces also meant they didn’t have to worry about the unpredictability of the British weather. “There were endless opportunities for photographs too – the iconic Trojan Steps, the hidden Moroccan Gardens and, of course, the safari.” Rachel and Julian created a sophisticated celebration with an elegant palette of white, black and gold, accented by rich mulberry tones that added warmth throughout the day. The colour featured beautifully in the bridesmaids’ dresses and floral arrangements. The venue’s unique surroundings inspired subtle giraffe illustrations on the invitations, alongside a sketch of the Mansion House. Florals played a starring role in the styling. A stunning broken floral arch framed the ceremony in the Pergola before being moved behind the couple for the wedding breakfast, creating a second breathtaking focal point. A ceremony table arrangement complemented a mix of tall and low centrepieces, adding depth and interest throughout the Orangery. One of the most personal touches was a blackand-white photo collage featuring every photograph Rachel and Julian had ever taken together. Displayed beside a bespoke sailboard for their Calleo audio guest book, which read All You Need Is Love, it became a meaningful focal point that guests loved exploring. Rachel found her dream gown at Isabella Grace in Tunbridge Wells, choosing the beautiful Sutton dress by Stella York. “After visiting three boutiques, I realised I wanted something more fitted with delicate detailing and I completely fell in love with the lace train. It was nothing like the dress I’d always imagined wearing – I’d always pictured long sleeves 28
and full lace – but it was absolutely perfect.” Julian wore a sophisticated double-breasted navy suit from Suit Supply, while his groomsmen wore coordinating navy suits from Next, allowing the groom’s tailored style to stand out. The bridesmaids wore elegant stretch-satin gowns in mulberry by Azazie, perfectly complementing the day’s colour palette. Guests were entertained throughout the day, beginning with an acoustic performance from two members of the couple’s evening band, Moonlight Mojo, during the drinks reception. To keep the wedding breakfast flowing, speeches were thoughtfully split between courses. Rachel’s father and the bridesmaids spoke after the starter, the newlyweds delivered a joint speech after the main course, before the best man rounded everything off after dessert. Then came one of the day’s most memorable experiences – a one-hour safari through Port Lympne’s wildlife reserve. “We saw rhinos, giraffes, deer and lions. It was absolutely incredible.” As evening arrived, Moonlight Mojo returned with two energetic live sets, performing songs chosen by the couple before the celebrations continued with a carefully curated Spotify playlist. “We even picked the final three songs ourselves, finishing the night with Never Forget by Take That. It felt like the perfect ending.” Although every part of the day exceeded expectations, one moment stood above the rest. “We decided to write our own vows and read them to one another before our legal vows. It was incredibly emotional and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. REAL WEDDINGS 29

FIRST SWIPE Love at Carol and Lea big day was a celebration of love Images courtesy of Through the Looking Glass Caz and Lea’s love story began with a swipe right on Tinder. Before meeting a friend at Ashford Designer Outlet, Caz arrived early and decided to spend a little time browsing the dating app. That seemingly ordinary moment meant she fell within the distance settings Lea had chosen – and the rest, as they say, is history. Caz proposed during a romantic getaway to Dorset in June 2022. She had carefully planned a picnic on the beach and asked Lea to pose for a photograph, secretly pressing record on the camera to capture the moment. As Caz got down on one knee, however, the proposal took an unexpected turn when a flock of seagulls swooped in to steal the picnic, knocking the camera over in the process. Ring safely on Lea’s finger, the newly engaged couple found themselves sprinting across the beach to rescue their lunch. If that wasn’t enough excitement, two determined dogs soon appeared to continue the battle for the picnic. “It certainly wasn’t the proposal we’d imagined,” laughs Caz, “but it couldn’t have been more memorable.” The couple viewed several venues, ranging from DIY spaces to all-inclusive wedding packages, but it was The Hythe Imperial Hotel that immediately stood out. “The staff were wonderful and we fell in love with the ballroom,” they explain. “Having accommodation on-site was also perfect for our guests travelling from further afield.” There was another unexpected reason the venue felt so special – it was right beside the location of their very first date. “We parked up, ate chips in the car and then went for a walk along the beach. It was a cold, windy day back in 2019, so getting married just a few steps away felt incredibly meaningful.” A sophisticated dusky blue colour palette ran throughout the day, complementing the hotel’s naturally elegant ballroom. Rather than overpowering the venue, Caz and Lea kept the styling beautifully understated with tall white floral centrepieces and dusky blue chair sashes that added just the right pop of colour to their styling. For their bridal looks, Caz chose Indy by White Rose from Molly Dolly’s in Hythe. “As someone who doesn’t wear dresses very often, I felt so comfortable in it straight away. The style suited me perfectly, and when all my friends cried after seeing me in it, I knew I’d made the right choice.” Lea wore the elegant Avia gown by House of Nicholas, purchased from Brides Visited in Ashtead, Surrey. “I rarely wear dresses, but this one made me feel a million dollars.” Their bridal party complemented the classic styling perfectly. The bridesmaids wore dusky blue dresses from JJ’s House, while the wedding party wore timeless black tie dinner jackets. The couple made sure there was plenty to keep guests entertained throughout the day; outdoor lawn games, including cornhole, encouraged everyone to mingle during the drinks reception, while a playful peg game challenged guests to secretly clip pegs onto one another without being caught. The evening brought another surprise, with the DJ unveiling an unexpected karaoke session that had everyone laughing and singing along. Although the day was filled with unforgettable moments, one stood out above all the rest; Caz and Lea wrote a personal message for every single guest, placing each note inside their place card. “We asked everyone to open them at the same time,” they explain. “Then we simply sat back and watched everyone read their messages.” Watching conversations spark around the room, alongside the smiles, laughter and emotion, became one of the couple’s favourite memories of the day. “It was so special to see just how much love surrounded us.” Their advice to newly engaged couples is simple, “Work as a team throughout the planning process and make sure your wedding reflects both of you.
