Woburn Safari Park welcomes a flurry of new arrivals There has been a baby boom at Woburn Safari Park, with a trio of alpaca crias, two otter pups and three Somali wild ass foals among the newest arrivals. At the Alpaca Outpost, three fluffy crias are already finding their feet after two more babies arrived just a week after the first. Meanwhile, keepers at the Foot Safari are celebrating the arrival of two otter pups, born to experienced parents Beatrix and Kovu. The park has also welcomed three Somali wild ass foals. The new arrivals provide an extra dose of wildlife excitement for visitors to the Bedfordshire attraction – and for couples planning a wedding at Woburn, they offer a reminder of the estate’s particularly distinctive setting. For couples looking to make their wedding day memorable, the combination of historic surroundings, countryside and wildlife creates plenty of opportunities to put a personal stamp on celebrations, while guests can explore the estate and safari park during their stay. There’s plenty more to discover at Woburn in the months ahead. www.woburnsafari.co.uk Nearlyweds with a sweet tooth have a delicious new reason to head to Harpenden High Street, as artisan bakery Bread Ahead will open its first site outside of London. Founded at Borough Market, Bread Ahead will open the doors to its new 2,500 sq ft bakery, all-day dining space and baking school at 92–94 High Street, Harpenden, on Monday 12th October. Visitors can expect the bakery’s signature sourdough and artisan breads, pastries and freshly made breakfast and brunch dishes, alongside its famous Crème Brûlée Doughnut and a tempting selection of classic, seasonal and new doughnut flavours. Designed as a welcoming place to eat, meet and linger, the new Harpenden bakery will also feature a dedicated upstairs baking classroom offering Bread Ahead’s renowned handson workshops – an ideal activity for couples looking for an alternative date or a fun pre-wedding get-together with friends and family. The space will also be available for private hire, with workshop bookings for January 2027 opening ahead of the new year. Families are well catered for too, with a children’s book corner and buggy space, while high-speed Wi-Fi makes it an easy spot for catching up over coffee – or perhaps tackling a little wedding planning over pastries. Bread Ahead founder Matthew Jones says: “We’re still an independent business and our people and our products are at the heart of everything we do.” The Harpenden opening will be the first Bread Ahead bakery to operate under the company’s new owner-operator model, which gives long-standing members of its team the opportunity to run their own bakery and share in its success. The team also hopes the bakery will become a community hub, with plans for family activities, community mornings and collaborations with local charities, food banks and grassroots organisations. So, whether you’re searching for a new brunch-date destination, fancy learning some impressive baking skills before the big day or simply need a doughnut-fuelled break from wedmin, this new High Street arrival is one to add to your little black book. MOBILE BEAUTY BY LIDIYA NAMED BEST MOBILE BEAUTY THERAPIST IN EAST OF ENGLAND Mobile Beauty By Lidiya has been named Best Mobile Beauty Therapist 2026 – East of England at the Leaders in Luxury Awards 2026. The award marks a significant milestone for the business, which has been built over the past decade by Lidiya, following 20 years of experience in the beauty industry. What began as a mobile beauty service providing professional treatments directly to clients has continued to evolve, with Lidiya combining her industry experience with a focus on personalised client care and innovation. Over the past 10 years, the business has embraced digital technology and new approaches to the mobile beauty experience, including CRM, application development, automation and accessibility. Lidiya says she is continuing to explore new ideas and opportunities for the future of mobile beauty. The award represents another chapter in the business’s journey, following thousands of appointments, continued professional development and an ongoing commitment to improving the client experience. Lidiya has thanked the clients who have supported Mobile Beauty By Lidiya over the years, including those who have booked and rebooked treatments, recommended the business, left reviews and followed its progress. For Lidiya, the recognition is not only a celebration of the business’s achievements but also of the clients who have been part of its 10-year journey. With further plans for the future already in development, the award looks set to be one milestone in an ongoing story for Mobile Beauty By Lidiya. www.beautybylidiya.co.uk RESEARCH REVEALS BRIDES WOULD RENEW THEIR ENGAGEMENT RING New research from 77 Diamonds has revealed that while many brides-to-be made compromises when choosing their engagement ring, sentiment still outweighs sparkle for most women. A survey of more than 1,100 UK women found that although 61 per cent received their dream engagement ring, over a third (36 per cent) said compromises were made due to budget constraints. In fact, 38 per cent admitted they would have chosen a different ring if money had been no object when they got engaged. Despite this, emotional attachment to the original ring remains strong. Just one in five women (20 per cent) have upgraded – or considered upgrading – their engagement ring, while 80 per cent have never thought about replacing it. For those who would welcome a new ring, milestone celebrations are the perfect opportunity. Half of those surveyed said a significant wedding anniversary would be the ideal occasion for an engagement ring upgrade, while almost a quarter (24 per cent) felt a vow renewal would be the most meaningful reason. Tobias Kormind, co-founder of 77 Diamonds, says: “Many couples get engaged while balancing careers, buying a home or starting a family, so it’s understandable that budget often influences ring choice. While some women may have chosen differently with a larger budget, the sentimental value of the original ring remains incredibly powerful. For many, it’s a symbol of their journey together, making it truly irreplaceable.” The findings highlight that while tastes and finances may change over time, the love story behind the original ring is what makes it priceless. https://unsplash.com/@sabrinnaringquist LATEST NEWS 7

Your Wedding, Your Way From a small intimate gathering to a larger formal ceremony, Hertford Castle offers a unique setting in which to exchange your vows and celebrate. The classic grandeur of the Downshire Suite is the perfect choice for your ceremony; our exclusive hire includes access to the Castle Grounds for your memorable photographs. Hertford Castle - where history and heritage meet timeless elegance. @hertfordcastle www.hertfordcastle.co.uk

Combining reflections of its regal past and historic splendour, Hertford Castle is an exclusive wedding venue set within peaceful riverside grounds Hertford Castle Gatehouse is a Grade I listed building, originally built on the site of a Norman Castle situated by the River Lea in Hertford, the county town of Hertfordshire. This magnificent Grade I listed building dates from the mid-15th century situated in beautiful grounds at the very heart of Hertford. The Castle was a Royal Palace for over 300 years where Queen Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood. Hertford Castle Gatehouse is all that remains of Hertford Castle. The impressive building is set in secluded grounds, hidden from view by the surrounding 12th century wall. Edward IV’s (1461 – 1483) royal coat of arms can be seen above the porch of this three-storey building, which is a very important piece of early brickwork. During repair work in 1967, a 15th century brick wall was found, hidden behind the 18th century plaster. Now, two stone lions guard the grand oak door of Hertford Castle, which leads past a spiral staircase, through to a richly dressed and well-trodden corridor, featuring the reverent images of Mayors past and present. TRADITIONAL GLAMOUR The classic grandeur of the Downshire Suite, is shared across three spaces: the traditional Georgian glamour of the Mayor’s Parlour, which boasts a grandiose fireplace; the classic Salisbury Room, which offers high ceilings, beautiful chandeliers and period sash windows; as well as the light-filled space of the beautiful Victorian conservatory. The Downshire Suite exudes timeless elegance and overlooks a sweeping formal lawn, set within original stone and flint battlement walls. Hertford Castle is situated in the heart of its natural surroundings, beside the reflective waters that serve the ancient trees that provide natural arched walkways. A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT Across the river stands a large earthen mound known as a ‘motte’. Built soon after 1066, the motte was the principal defensive point of the early Castle and is now the oldest surviving part. The river flows through the town and Castle site, forming an important habitat for wildlife, including the occasional kingfisher. An enchanting rose garden and a wash of wildflowers in the Moat Garden offer further picture-perfect opportunities for couples to seal their own piece of history, as they make their commitment to each other. RENEWED INVESTMENT Looking to the future, the grounds of Hertford Castle are set to be renewed by a recent ‘once in a generation’ investment of £3.5 million, from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Over the past couple of years, a sensitive and ambitious masterplan has been developed, focusing on heritage conservation, biodiversity enhancement, accessibility and the needs of the local community. Subject to statutory permissions and consents, works will start in 2028, so there is still time to secure your wedding at Hertford Castle for 2027, before a necessary break in wedding bookings. Hertford Castle takes great pride in providing the dream wedding day experience and this commitment is reflected by its reviews. ‘Beautiful’, ‘perfect’ and ‘special’ are words that are often heard when couples reflect on the role the Castle has played in their special day, whether they have lived nearby all their lives or are looking for a venue accessible for their guests from London. Hertford boasts boutique hotels, quaint restaurants and independent riverside cafes - the ideal location for your guests to spend time relaxing before or after your big day. From a small intimate gathering to a larger formal ceremony, Hertford Castle offers choice from a suite of rooms in which to exchange your vows and celebrate. The perfect setting for entertaining and celebrating in style, Hertford Castle gives couples the freedom to choose their own caterers and suppliers, to create a wonderfully personalised and most memorable wedding day. Discover your own private world at South Farm wedding venue There’s something special about arriving at South Farm and knowing that, for your wedding day, this beautiful corner of the Hertfordshire countryside is yours alone. Set across 20 acres of farmland, gardens and woodland, South Farm is more than somewhere to get married. It’s a place where your whole day can unfold naturally, from getting ready in the Apple Shed to gathering with your favourite people, exploring the grounds and celebrating long into the evening. And because it’s a working farm, the seasons are woven through every part of the experience. FIELD TO FORK Food sits at the heart of a South Farm wedding. The Field to Fork ethos brings the farm itself onto the plate, with the kitchen working with whatever is growing and available throughout the year. Spring brings fresh, vibrant produce, summer is a time of abundance from the kitchen garden, autumn’s harvest lends the menu a deeper richness, and winter offers something hearty and comforting. The result is food that’s connected to the time of year and the place you’re celebrating in, not simply served alongside it. Beyond the food, there are countless ways to make the day your own. Take a quiet moment together in the gardens, wander down to see the donkeys and goats, or capture photographs among the trees and open fields. Arrive at your ceremony in Walter, South Farm’s much-loved VW campervan, and find your own favourite corner of the farm along the way. CREATING SOMETHING DISTINCTIVE There are beautiful spaces for ceremonies, dining and dancing, but no need for the day to follow a template. The magic lies in creating something that feels like you, and South Farm’s in-house event team is there throughout, from the earliest planning stages to the day itself, making sure everything runs smoothly so you can simply enjoy it. That’s what makes South Farm more than a wedding venue. It’s your own private world for the day – good food, open countryside, a little farmyard fun, and the changing seasons providing the backdrop. A place to slow down, celebrate, and make the day entirely your own. More than a wedding venue ENQUIRE NOW! info@south-farm.co.uk www.south-farm.co.uk 21

I choose you When Nicola and Matt Harmel tied the knot at Shortmead House in Biggleswade, their wedding was every bit as personal, colourful and fun as the couple themselves Images courtesy of Ace of Spades Photography Nicola and Matt’s love story began in January 2017 when they met online through Plenty of Fish. In fact, they were never actually supposed to be matched, with their profiles being paired by mistake. Today, they like to think it was simply fate. At the time, Nicola was in her final year of training to become an adult nurse, while Matt was working for a warehouse company. Within a few years, they had launched their own Pokémon business together, eventually opening their very own shop. It was fitting, then, that Pokémon would play a subtle but memorable role in their wedding day. Matt proposed on Christmas Day 2022 at Nicola’s parents’ house, surrounded by their three children and Nicola’s family. When he announced that it was time for Nicola’s present, he pulled out a packet of Haribo sweet rings. Assuming he was joking, Nicola was completely confused – until Matt knelt down and asked, “How about a real one?” before producing her engagement ring. Their venue was another happy accident. Having originally booked a hotel, the couple were left without a venue when it unexpectedly closed. Their wedding dresser, Claire, suggested Shortmead House, and after meeting owners Lee and Esme, they instantly fell in love with its exclusive, intimate and private atmosphere. For a couple who wanted to avoid anything too plain or predictable, their Pokémon-inspired styling was the perfect fit. Each table was named after a Pokémon, with every guest becoming a Pokémon Trainer and receiving a Polaroid-sized image featuring their assigned Pokémon and table. The keepsakes could then be taken home as a reminder of the day. The colour scheme continued throughout the décor, with each table reflecting its Pokémon: purple for Gengar, yellow for Pikachu, blue for Blastoise, green for Venusaur, black for Umbreon, pink for Mew and red for Latios. Their wedding cake followed the same idea. From the front, it appeared to be a classic white three-tiered wedding cake decorated with bold, colourful flowers. From the side, however, it revealed vibrant Pokémon-inspired layers. The flavours were Red Velvet, Victoria Sponge and Double Chocolate. The relaxed atmosphere extended to the food. Rather than opting for a traditional sit-down wedding breakfast, Matt and Nicola chose a BBQ, reflecting their love of casual gatherings. Guests enjoyed a selection of meats, salads, breads and more, followed by an evening finger buffet. Nicola chose a close-fitting dress from Wed2B that complemented her figure and made her feel both comfortable and confident. She went shopping with her mum, Pat, and maid of honour and big sister, Michelle. Knowing her sister would always give her an honest opinion, Nicola knew she had found the one when both Michelle and her mum were moved to tears. Matt wore a light blue micro-check suit with matching waistcoat and trousers, finished with a blue tie and buttonhole, while the groomsmen wore the same. The bridesmaids complemented them in floorlength, sleeveless gowns in a dusty steel-blue shade. Entertainment was a major part of the celebrations. Pianist and singer James Nicholas performed throughout the day, including an acoustic version of I Feel It Coming by The Weeknd as Nicola walked down the aisle – a meaningful choice as the song was in the charts when Matt and Nicola first met. Illusionist Lee Smith Magic left guests completely amazed, while DJ Jamz kept everyone dancing into the evening, even bringing out the bongos and playing the Pokémon theme. For Nicola, however, the most emotional moment came when her dad, Keith, walked her down the aisle. Earlier that year, Keith had been diagnosed with kidney cancer and subsequently heart failure, making surgery particularly risky. Four months after undergoing the operation, he was there beside his daughter on her wedding day. For Nicola, having her “rock” by her side was a moment she will never forget. Her advice to other couples planning their wedding is simple: make a list of must-haves and another of things that would be nice to have, then tackle each element gradually. “Trying to do everything at once creates so much unnecessary stress,” she says. “You want to enjoy the process, so take your time!” REAL WEDDINGS 25

BACK WHERE it began Thirteen years after falling in love at university, Emily and Aidan returned to Bath for a romantic proposal before celebrating their spring woodland wedding at South Farm Images courtesy of Tom Halliday Photography 32

REAL WEDDINGS 33

After meeting at the University of Bath, Emily and Aidan spent two years as friends before finally becoming a couple. Thirteen years later, Aidan proposed in the city where their story began, leading to a beautiful spring wedding filled with personal touches and unforgettable moments. SETTING THE SCENE South Farm was the perfect choice, combining rustic countryside charm with elegant, contemporary spaces. The couple styled the venue with a relaxed spring woodland theme using daffodils, white roses, ferns and moss-covered logs. As huge Lord of the Rings fans, they added subtle nods to Middle-earth by naming each table after a location from the books, complete with a themed plant or flower. Guests enjoyed a delicious roast wedding breakfast followed by miniature brownies and blondies before American diner-style evening food kept everyone dancing late into the night. LOOKING THE PART Emily fell in love with a soft, romantic gown featuring a delicate lace bodice flowing into a buttery-soft tulle skirt. “I thought I’d choose something sleek and fitted,” she says. “But as soon as I tried this dress on, I never wanted to take it off.” A dramatic cathedral-length veil completed her bridal look. 34

Aidan complemented the woodland styling perfectly in a brown tweed-style suit with a sage green tie and dried flower buttonhole, while the bridesmaids wore forest green gowns in a choice of styles to suit each of them. MOMENTS TO TREASURE Following the ceremony, guests were entertained by a traditional Irish guitar and fiddle duo before testing their film knowledge during dinner with the couple’s movie soundtrack quiz. Later, South Farm’s resident DJ Gary filled the dancefloor with classics and favourite songs. Emily’s favourite memory was sharing those first few quiet moments together after the ceremony with a glass of prosecco before rejoining their guests, closely followed by an unforgettable singalong to Tenacious D’s Tribute, complete with a huge circle of family and friends performing enthusiastic air guitar. While AI is becoming a key planning tool, its growing role in crafting what’s said on the day is striking. Couples are turning to the likes of ChatGPT to help them with confidence, creativity and emotional support. A survey by jewellers Queensmith has revealed that more than half (55%) of UK nearlyweds are now using AI tools to help write their wedding vows and speeches, raising questions about authenticity, originality and even potential legal grey areas. The findings come amid a growing debate around AIwritten vows after a registrar in the eastern Netherlands saw a marriage called into question when AI was used to help write the ceremony script. In the case, the District Court of Overijssel ruled that ‘no marriage has been established’ after it emerged the registrar had relied on ChatGPT to draft parts of the ceremony. The case has sparked wider concerns that AI-generated wording could unintentionally mirror existing vows or scripts found online, raising questions about originality and authenticity. The survey also revealed just how deeply this trend is taking root with: • 72% turned to AI because they didn’t know where to start with writing their vows • 53% using AI for inspiration only • 31% editing their speeches with AI • 19% writing them entirely with AI • 63% only feel comfortable with no more than 25% of their vows being AI-generated So why are couples doing it? Here are the top five reasons: 1 I didn’t know where to start or what to say (72%) 2 I wanted to make them sound better (41%) 3 I wanted to make them more romantic and poetic (25%) 4 I wanted to make them funnier (9%) 5 I wanted them to sound less cringeworthy (6%) The research also revealed that 66% of couples said they would be honest and tell their partner if AI had helped write their vows or speech, while 28% said they would only reveal it if asked, and 6% admitted they would never disclose it, likely out of concern that it might undermine the sentiment of their words and the impact they had on the day. Wedding expert and gemmologist Laura Suttie from Queensmith says the trend reflects the growing pressure couples feel to create a ‘perfect’ moment, but warns that relying Experts are warning couples not to rely on AI to write one of the most personal parts of their big day – their vows Keep it personal 38

Images courtesy of unsplash.com too heavily on AI risks losing the emotional authenticity that makes vows memorable. “We’re seeing more couples turning to AI for emotional tasks like vow writing, not because they lack sincerity but because the pressure to deliver a perfect moment has never been greater,” says Laura. “With so many weddings being filmed, shared or even livestreamed on social media, people feel their words need to live up to the moment, which can be daunting. Some couples also feel too time-poor to sit down and write something meaningful from scratch.” She adds that while AI can be a helpful starting point, couples should avoid letting technology take over entirely. “AI can help overcome writer’s block, but if your vows sound like they could belong to anyone, they lose the meaning that makes them special. Your partner wants to hear your words, not something an algorithm generated.” HOW TO AVOID A CRINGE-WORTHY SPEECH Laura shares her top seven tips for writing a speech that feels genuine, confident and heartfelt: 1. Start with structure: Give your speech a beginning, middle and end. A clear structure will help keep you focused to then guide the tone of what you want to say. 2. Keep it concise and heartfelt: Aim for around five minutes. A sincere, well-paced speech will always have more impact than one that tries to say too much. 3. Make it inclusive: Keep your speech appropriate for a diverse audience from grandparents to close friends. Avoid in-jokes or overly personal anecdotes that risks isolating listeners. 4. Use AI to inspire, not replace: AI can help get you started if you’re stuck but it shouldn’t write your entire speech. Add your own voice and personal touches as it will mean a lot more to your partner and your audience. 5. Read it out loud: Practise, edit and practise again. Reading your speech out loud can help with pacing, confidence and spotting any weird phrasing. 6. Speak genuinely, not generically: The most memorable speeches are rooted in real stories and authentic emotion. Focus on your connection, not perfection. 7. Get a second opinion: Before the big day, ask someone you trust to listen. A fresh perspective can help ensure your tone is right and your message resonates. As AI continues to play a bigger role in modern weddings, it’s clear that couples are looking for ways to balance ease with emotion, tradition with technology. The end OF PERFECT We explore how couples are falling out of love with perfection and choosing documentary wedding photography For more than a decade, as social media grew in popularity and became increasingly ingrained in our lives, so too did the desire for polished, Insta-worthy wedding shots. The ultimate goal was to secure images that belonged on the front cover of a luxury magazine. But rather than choosing between polished portraits and authentic moments, today’s couples increasingly want both. They’re looking for photographers who’ll capture their wedding day as it unfolds, rather than a series of carefully staged moments. The rise of documentary photography reflects a need for authenticity and presence, going hand-in-hand with the trend for ultra-personalised big days. Today, the perfect wedding album might include a tear-streaked face, hilarity on the dance floor or the youngest guests running with abandon through the venue’s grounds. FROM PINTEREST TO PRESENCE Social media and its resulting habit of doom-scrolling has caused many to reach the point of perfection fatigue. Today’s couples have grown up exposed to an endless parade of highly curated content from lifestyle to fashion, and of course weddings. Whereas the previous generation might have envisioned their wedding day in the form of scrapbooks, sketches and marked-up magazines, Gen Z-ers naturally gravitate to Pinterest, Instagram and TikTok for their wedspiration. After years spent in the pursuit of perfection, perhaps the pandemic and months spent in isolation reminded us of what matters most. When the wedding industry emerged from lockdown, the trend for more intimate, meaningful wedding days quickly became prevalent, and in the years that followed, this beating heart has remained even though we’re seeing guest numbers begin to grow once more. To reflect these personalised celebrations, there’s a growing demand for photography that showcases candid storytelling, genuine emotion and real moments. A recurring theme we see among our real wedding couples is that many have no desire to spend the moments following their ceremony posing for the camera with an endless parade of carefully planned guest groups. No, they’re far keener to get the party started, and why not? With a documentary photographer at the helm, there’s no need to fear a lack of captured memories of your nearest and dearest. Seeing themselves more as observers, they shoot moments of you and your guests as they unfold. It’s their job to be in the right place at the right time, with the camera pointing in the unsplash.com@jakobowens 40
