We’ve already had the hottest May day on record, so we could be in for a scorcher of a summer! If you’re marrying or celebrating al fresco, gift your guests fans, parasols, sunglasses and suncream as they arrive. Additionally, ensure there’s enough shade to protect everyone from the sun’s rays. Just a little extra thought ahead of time will mean you’re all comfortable and able to enjoy every moment. Find out more at gisborough-hall.com HULL hen dos Online interest in hen dos reached its highest point in the UK between April and June, with many brides-to-be looking for locations that don’t break the bank. With this in mind, a new study has named the cheapest UK cities to host a hen do. Conducted by Smiffys (smiffys.com), the study scored the 50 largest UK cities out of 100 based on six affordability factors. Yorkshire’s very own Kingston upon Hull emerged as the cheapest city for a hen do, scoring 92.06 out of 100. The city has some of the UK’s most affordable nightlife, offering the lowest price for a shot of vodka, 33 per cent cheaper than in nearby Leeds. In total, three Yorkshire hotspots made it into the top 10 with Wakefield and Sheffield following behind in 9th and 10th positions respectively. MAKING HISTORY Couples marrying at Leeds Bradford Airport Hotel can incorporate a touch of history into their day thanks to the 17th-century Puritan chapel just across the road. Built in 1649 by local landowner Robert Dyneley, Bramhope Puritan Chapel is a rare Grade I listed survivor of the Commonwealth period. It is one of the few churches in England designed for Puritan worship. Visitors can still see original box pews and a stone altar. In conjunction with the Parish Council, couples can use the chapel for blessings following a civil marriage at the Leeds Bradford Airport Hotel. SMALL BUT MIGHTY Bigger isn’t always better when it comes to weddings. According to Imogen D’Cruz, in-house wedding coordinator at The Milner York (themilneryork.com), more couples are choosing smaller, more unique celebrations that prioritise meaningful moments over tradition. “With a more intimate guest list, couples can relax and enjoy genuine time with their family and friends rather than feeling rushed throughout the day,” says Imogen. The trend reflects a growing desire for weddings that feel authentic and tailored to each couple, from bespoke dining settings and personalised details to relaxed multi-day celebrations. Rather than following a set formula, today’s couples are creating events that reflect their own values and relationships. “Whether it’s a private dining reception, a wedding weekend or a traditional celebration with a personal twist, the focus is on connection and experiences,” adds Imogen. “Ultimately, that’s what makes a wedding unforgettable.” Zanzibar emerging as a top honeymoon choice, says local travel expert As newlyweds continue to seek unforgettable honeymoon experiences, one destination is quietly rising in popularity: Zanzibar. Step into a tranquil, hidden medieval realm just outside Leeds city centre Situated among leafy parkland, in a wide, green valley beside the River Aire, the ruins of Kirkstall Abbey are steeped in more than 870 years of history. The open-air venue is elegant and cathedral-like, and there’s a softness to it despite its grandeur with the warm stone making it feel inviting rather than imposing. Generous lawns roll out in every direction, while mature trees frame the ruins, giving you pockets of shade, dappled light and quiet corners for photos or a breather from celebrations. The lawns are open and airy, perfect for a spot of mingling with loved ones post-ceremony as you soak in the setting. If the weather is wet or chilly, the Rose Room can host your ceremony with a capacity of up to 40 guests. It’s also the perfect place for a drinks reception. WITH LOVE From York Katie and Roan tied the knot at The Hospitium among the beautiful Museum Gardens in York Images courtesy of Swiftly Creative Roan proposed to Katie at the Edge viewing platform in New York in 2022. They’d known each other since they were 10, so the time had come! Earlier that year, the couple had visited York together and fell in love with the Museum Gardens. They both adore characterful buildings, so they snapped a selfie outside the Hospitium in the grounds. “We didn’t know at the time that it was a wedding venue,” Katie explains. Once they were engaged, Katie explored many potential venues online until she saw an advert for the Hospitium. “I remembered our visit and couldn’t believe you could get married there,” Katie says. “We booked a visit straight away and secured our date the same week – it felt special to us.” The couple chose lilac as the foundation for their wedding palette, perfect for early summer nuptials. Katie is a creative soul and wanted to get involved with some DIY elements, so she made their welcome sign with a vintage mirror and mirror paint. She also made a selfie backdrop and wedding newspapers. “I didn’t want to go overboard with the decor, but I adore flowers and wanted them to be the centre of attention,” she explains. “Our florist did an amazing job.” Following the 2pm ceremony, the newlyweds and their guests settled down to a three-course wedding breakfast complete with traditional prosecco toasts alongside the speeches. A buffet was served in the evening along with the wedding cake. Since Katie is such a floral fan, it’s easy to see why she fell in love with her gown, Florelle by Heidi Hudson. “The dress felt perfect and after trying it on, my one-year-old nephew clapped to give me the stamp of approval!” Roan wore a dark green threepiece suit with a champagnecoloured tie and pocket square. The colours complemented the lilac palette beautifully. His party’s attire differed slightly with dark green waistcoats and black jackets. The bridesmaids wore lilac tulle dresses. Katie had arranged for some very special accessories, and the night before, she and her girls had permanent bracelets fitted. “Everyone loved this idea and we still have them on now,” she shares. She also got them involved in a bit of crafting. They were each given flowers to match the colour palette and arranged and decorated their own bouquets – a relaxing activity they could all enjoy together. A violinist created a romantic atmosphere for the ceremony and drinks reception. It was a gorgeous summer day, so guests loved making the most of the outdoor space post vows. During the evening, a live band packed the dance floor and there was an audio guest book available for guests to leave their best wishes to the happy couple. REAL WEDDINGS 21

James carefully set the scene for his proposal to Leah, decorating their flat with candles, fairy lights and photos of the two of them. Romantic music played and Champagne was at the ready when Leah came home from work to find him waiting for her. The couple were living in London at the time and wanted the complete opposite for their wedding day, yearning for the quiet of the countryside. They dreamed of being surrounded by green as far as the eye could see, so when The Manor Rooms in Brough offered them a relaxed dinner service with fresh barbecue, they jumped at the chance and wasted no time booking the venue. Leah’s vision for the styling had a romantic, classic and elegant feel. This was brought to life through white flowers, white drapes and candlelight, along with a floral arch focal point. The bride handcrafted stones from clay and stamped guests’ names onto them to act as place names and wedding favours. Prosecco was served in the most elegant fashion imaginable – topped with white candy floss and black bows tied around the stems. The couple’s favourite Champagne, Laurent-Perrier Rosé, was served to the two of them at the top table for the speeches as an extra special treat for the newlyweds. Leah wore Adriana by Elysse Etoile with custommade lace sleeves. This addition confirmed it as the one for her. “It was sexy, classy and lacy with a long train,” she explains. “The back was mostly out and the fit was perfect.” To complete the look, she added a cathedral-length veil. 28
James wore a custom tux from Slaters with a white satin pocket square and patent leather shoes. His groomsmen were sharply dressed to match. In homage to his favourite fantasy films, the Harry Potter series, he added a golden snitch pin to his lapel. The focus on the big day was very much on epic entertainment. Confetti cannons heralded the newlyweds’ walk back up the aisle and first dance, and were even let off on the dance floor. The DJ’s playlist was largely selected by the couple and included the best of the 90s and 00s music with a saxophone player to support. One of the night’s highlights was a firework display, which James designed with the team as a surprise for Leah and their guests. “Standing with my new husband watching our guests enjoy the show put on just for us with our sax player behind us, was a magical moment,” Leah remembers. For the bride, walking down the aisle towards James was an experience she’ll never forget: “It was a feeling I’ll never experience again, the most special moment we’ll have,” she shares. Finally, Leah has some excellent tips to share: “Just do what you want to do. As I’m a wedding planner myself, not many people told me what I should and shouldn’t do. But what truly made our wedding so good was that we kept all the decisions to ourselves, so it was a surprise for everyone, and we did exactly what we wanted!” REAL WEDDINGS 29

Set up a wedding website for your RSVPs and important information to save on printing. FOOD AND DRINK Source a local catering company to reduce your carbon footprint. Opt for a seasonal menu featuring locally sourced ingredients. Eliminate waste by asking your caterer about donating any leftovers, or plan guest takeaway boxes. VENUE STYLING Source flowers from a local flower farm or grower. Choose from in season blooms, that don’t need to be imported, eliminating air miles. Opt for wildflowers, dried flowers, or potted plants (which can double-up as favours). Hire props, don’t buy then throw away. Hit the charity shops for centrepiece elements such as vases, jars and candles. Remember: this only works if you re-donate them post-wedding. New RULES We look at why modern couples are rewriting the traditional hen and stag celebration New booking data from holiday and party house booking company Kate & Tom’s (kateandtoms.com) got us thinking: Is the age of gendered pre-wedding celebrations coming to an end? We decided to explore. Andy Brooker, travel expert at Kate & Tom’s, weighs in on the everchanging landscape of engagement celebrations: “It’s fascinating to see the cultural insight in the data. We’ve seen a shift in the way we’re celebrating. There’s an increased appetite for group getaways, including multi-generational stays that prioritise quality time and create core memories. Whether that’s a group stay with the full works of facilities, a heated pool, hot tub, yoga room, or games room with karaoke set-up as the number one priority, we’re moving away from the one-size-fits-all hen do and stag do. It all really boils down to personal preference.” A SOBERING THOUGHT The data points to a shift towards celebrations becoming more intentional than ever. Couples and their loved ones are creating something more memorable rather than spontaneous and taking real enjoyment in getting together to celebrate a pre-wedding milestone in its own right. So, how can we explain the migration away from the traditional, more raucous ‘last night of freedom’ or ‘final fling before the ring’ mentality? According to the Office for National Statistics, the median age for men and women entering into marriage in 2023 remained among the highest median ages recorded, at 34.8 years and 33 years respectively. As we all know, the older you get the worse the hangovers are! So, could this explain the avoidance of alcohol-fuelled nights out? Not necessarily, as data from the most recent NHS Health Survey for England shows that young people in particular are shunning the booze. Some 39 per cent of young men say they abstain from alcohol, while 31 per cent of women claim to be non-drinkers. It’s an ongoing trend among Gen Z and millennials, which may be attributed to modern attitudes towards a wellness culture and sober-curious trend. MUTUAL FRIENDS While overall reduction in enthusiasm towards alcohol may explain the shift away from the nights on the town we’re used to seeing, it tells us less about the move towards mixed gender and multi-generational, all-inclusive celebrations.
