Swansea Bay introduces British Art Show 10 Swansea Bay is emerging as one of the UK’s most rewarding cultural escapes, home to the birthplace of literary legend Dylan Thomas, award-winning museums and galleries, and a thriving arts scene. Next year will mark a landmark moment for Swansea’s cultural scene as the city welcomes the British Art Show 10: A Chorus of Strangers for the first time. As the only Welsh destination selected to host the UK’s largest recurring exhibition of contemporary art, Swansea will join a prestigious line-up of cities that have staged the nationally renowned showcase. Running from 12th February to 16th May 2027, the exhibition will bring works by some of the UK’s most exciting contemporary artists to venues across the city, including the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Elysium Gallery, Mission Gallery, GS Artists, and Swansea Museum, firmly placing Swansea in the national cultural spotlight. Swansea Bay offers visitors the chance to discover world-class culture against the backdrop of one of Britain’s most spectacular coastlines. visitswanseabay.com PENMAENUCHAF COMPLETES TRANSFORMATION Set beneath the slopes of Cadair Idris and overlooking the Mawddach Estuary, Penmaenuchaf has completed a four-year transformation reimagining the historic country house as one of Wales’ most distinctive luxury retreats. Shaped by the Welsh concept of hiraeth, a deep emotional connection to a place and a longing for somewhere that feels like home, the refurbishment was created in collaboration with interior designer Nicola Harding, and marries Welsh landscape, craftsmanship and storytelling across all 14 bedrooms and the hotel’s shared spaces. The final phase of the project sees five bedrooms that have been individually redesigned and named after Welsh landscapes, historical figures and mythology - Meirionnydd, Ogwen, Cregennan, Glyndŵr and Rhiannon each tell their own story through carefully selected furnishings, layered textiles and hand-crafted details. Among them is a new master suite with a private balcony overlooking the gardens, while Ogwen (pictured) features a private outdoor terrace with a copper spa bath, offering uninterrupted views across the surrounding landscape. Drawing inspiration from the Victorian character of the house, the landscapes of Eryri and Wales’ rich craft traditions, the interiors have evolved through layers of colour, texture and craftsmanship to create spaces that feel deeply rooted in place. The refurbishment has also introduced a collection of new spaces. The new Music Room retains its original oak panelling and Victorian anaglypta ceiling, creating a richly atmospheric setting for evenings beside the fire accompanied by a curated vinyl collection. The Morning Room offers a light space overlooking the gardens, while an adjoining library, decorated in burgundy tones, provides a quiet retreat for reading. Developed in collaboration with Penrallt Gallery Bookshop in Machynlleth, the book shelves explore Welsh history and culture. Afon Restaurant, named after the Welsh word for river, takes inspiration from the Afon Mawddach and estuary that unfold below the house. A tented ceiling in deep green-blue fabric reflects the changing colours of water, light and landscape, creating a softer, more intimate atmosphere that complements head chef Dan Andrée’s seasonal approach to cooking. Here, Welsh produce and the flavours of North Wales remain at the heart of the dining experience. penmaenuchaf.co.uk Read more online at yoursouthwales.wedding NEWS Nearlywed All the latest from the regions 6
Editor’s pick For a Welsh mini-moon, pick from six fabulous Premier Cottages perched on the coastal estate in Snowdonia’s Eryri National Park. They come equipped with a renovated indoor heated swimming pool, a woodland area and table tennis. The cottages range from Tilly’s Shepherd Hut, which sleeps two people, to the main house itself, which sleeps up to 18 guests. premiercottages.co.uk/cottages/llanfendigaid-estate SWANSEA NAMED ONE OF THE BEST UK FOOD DESTINATIONS Swansea has been named the UK’s fifth-best food destination after analysis by travel specialists at Ski Vertigo, which compared recent restaurant rankings, review data, and current dining guide credentials across more than 60 UK cities. London dominates the UK for sheer restaurant volume and high-end dining. Still, the ranking looked beyond size alone, comparing the ratio of five-star-rated food spots to total venues alongside wider guide recognition. That matters for Swansea, where the appeal is less about a formal dining district and more about a compact mix of city-centre restaurants, Swansea Market staples, Mumbles seafront stops, and Gower produce within easy reach. Swansea’s position gives the city a clear food-led break hook for travellers wanting a cheaper, easier alternative to the capital. Visitors can build a weekend around a meal in the city, a market lunch, an ice cream stop in Mumbles and a coastal pub or seafood-led trip towards the Gower. The wider area has guide-recognised dining, including Beach House in Oxwich on the Gower, which has helped give the region a stronger destination-dining profile beyond the city centre. As a travel company advising holidaymakers on short breaks and route planning, Ski Vertigo says food-led trips work best when visitors plan one or two key bookings first, then leave space for markets, independent cafés and last-minute local finds. Alex Dyer, managing director at Ski Vertigo, said: “Swansea is a strong choice for a food weekend because it gives travellers variety without making the trip feel over-planned.” Alex adds, “Pick the restaurants you would be disappointed to miss, reserve those early, then travel off-peak where possible.” skivertigo.co.uk Editor loves Grove of Narberth is located deep in the enchanting woodlands of Pembrokeshire, a luxurious retreat perfect for a pre-wedding getaway or a mini-moon in the region, where guests can explore the rich surroundings and indulge in great food and beverage offerings, in particular its afternoon tea. grovenarberth.co.uk unsplash.com WINNERS OF NATIONAL PUB & BAR AWARDS 2026 ANNOUNCED The winners of the National Pub & Bar Awards 2026 were announced earlier this year, with Wales Pub and Bar of the Year awarded to George III, Dolgellau, North West Wales. Summer love The Orangery at Margam Country Park was the elegant backdrop for Ffion and Rob’s wedding, decorated with summery pastel shades Images courtesy of Honeydew Moments Ffion and Rob met when she was a customer at the place where he worked. “I was instantly taken aback by how beautiful she was, Rob tells us. “We soon realised we were in the same student Facebook group, and when we started university, we became a couple.” Rob proposed during a holiday in Budapest for Ffion’s birthday. “We had been together for a year and a half and were both still at university, but I knew she was the one,” Rob says. “We visited Hungary’s Fisherman’s Bastion during our holiday, and after a steep walk to reach the top, I found a private nook tucked away from the crowds, and asked her to marry me. I was overwhelmed by nerves, and a smile so wide beamed across her face!” Ffion’s sister was a guest at a wedding held at The Orangery at Margam Country Park, and told the couple how beautiful it was, so they chose this venue for their own special day. “The lighting during the summer months, the building and the grounds all looked stunning - we left after our first viewing with a date booked in,” they tell us. Ffion and Rob decorated their June wedding with summery pastel colours. “We visited the venue for a wedding showcase, and Ffion saw an arrangement made by ELYN Boutique and fell in love with it,” Rob explains. “She wanted exactly what she saw for our own wedding. We tied in the beautiful floral arrangements with lilac chair sashes, pastel floral centrepieces and a large floral archway as the backdrop for our vows.” Rob’s sister married them, a special moment for them. “Watching Ffion walk down the aisle was a memory I’ll never forget,” Rob tells us. “The pianist we hired created custom arrangements of some of our favourite songs, which included Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling In Love and Accidentally in Love from the film Shrek 2 that we walked down the aisle to.” The talented team at the venue did the catering for the couple’s special day. “Our guests enjoyed a seated three-course meal and a charcuterie buffet during the evening,” Rob says. “Bottles of wine were provided for each table, and the drinks kept flowing at the bar as the night went on. We also had a sweetie cart and popcorn machine.” Ffion chose a beautiful fairytale-inspired ballgown with a sweetheart bodice and an A-line skirt. “I felt like a princess as soon as I tried it on,” she tells us. She changed into a shorter dress for the evening party. “I loved seeing Ffion’s change of wedding dress, which she wore during our iconic champagne spray!” Rob adds. Rob wore a smart forest green-coloured suit, and his groomsmen wore matching mint green suits. “Our beautiful bridesmaids wore pastel lilac dresses with a pretty floral print,” Ffion says. The couple entertained their guests with a photo booth, a phone booth to capture video messages, a children’s playroom and a light-up dancefloor with a DJ to get everybody up and dancing. “Our first dance was a memorable moment for me,” Rob tells us. Plus, our little cousin stole the show with his dance moves!” REAL WEDDINGS 15

An intimate day Michelle and Liam enjoyed a countryside celebration at Waun Wyllt, located in Llanelli Images courtesy of Lucy Parker Photography REAL WEDDINGS 21
Michelle and Liam met through work, and started dating in 2020 before Liam popped the question at the couple’s home. “As a chef, Liam has always wrapped my birthday gifts in foil, so he made a big diamond ring out of foil to propose with!” Michelle tells us. “Of course I said “yes,” after all, foil is expensive these days!” The couple own the venue, Waun Wyllt, so it was a natural choice to host their own wedding there. “It’s our happy place,” Michelle tells us. “We started the business in August 2020, holding just two to five weddings each year. We’ve loved helping other couples celebrate and plan their weddings over the past six years. It felt strange being the ones to be married there, but we loved every moment!” Michelle and Liam’s ceremony took place in the garden, which they have worked on for the past four years, growing their own flowers and plants. “The garden was only recently licensed for outdoor ceremonies so we were the first couple to get married there - some things are meant to be,” Michelle says. “Our outdoor ceremony was one of the highlights of our day.” The couple chose a green-and-white colour theme to match the countryside surroundings. “We kept things simple so our florist, Victoria 22
“Spend as much time as you can with your loved one; the day goes by so quickly.” - Michelle and Liam from Blossom to Bloom in Llanelli, matched stunning natural-looking flowers to complement the surroundings and garden,” Michelle tells us. “For our evening reception, Victoria provided white roses and floating candles. The venue is already quite intimate so we just needed something simple.” Michelle and Liam’s guests enjoyed champagne and canapés before their wedding breakfast. “As Liam is a chef and cooks many three-course traditional wedding breakfasts, we opted for something a little different and decided on tapas and cocktails that everyone could enjoy throughout the afternoon,” Michelle says. “For the evening, we chose paella cooked in a traditional large pan and Liam’s mum made our delicious wedding cake!” Michelle wore a fishtail dress by the Ukrainian designer Yedyna. “I loved it! I see so many beautiful dresses being a wedding coordinator at our venue, and I hadn’t seen anything quite like it before.” Liam wore a double-breasted suit from Solidgold Menswear in Llanelli. “They made smaller versions of it for our two sons, William and Oscar, who looked so cute!” Michelle says. “Our groomsmen had single-breasted versions to match, and our beautiful bridesmaids wore olive green satin gowns, with our flowergirls dressed in cute white dresses.” Michelle and Liam had live music by The Hat and Fiddle Band, who performed throughout the day and evening. “We had An Irish Party in Third Class from the film Titanic as our first dance, which we thoroughly enjoyed,” Michelle tells us. “We also had a white bouncy castle and soft play to keep the little ones amused, and plenty of food and drinks flowing for the adult guests!” REAL WEDDINGS 23

The Instagram effect ON WEDDING VENUES How social media is reshaping the industry In an era where a single photograph can reach millions of viewers within hours, wedding venues are experiencing a seismic shift in how they attract couples and showcase their spaces. Instagram has evolved from a simple photo-sharing app into the most powerful marketing tool the wedding industry has ever seen and it’s fundamentally changing what couples look for in a venue. We spoke with Nick from Country House Weddings (countryhouseweddings. co.uk) to explore how social media, particularly Instagram and TikTok is reshaping venue selection, design, and the entire wedding experience. THE RISE OF INSTAGRAM-WORTHY VENUES “Ten years ago, couples primarily chose venues based on capacity, location, and price,” explains Nick “Today, the first question whether said or not is really: ‘How Instagram-worthy is it?’. The visual appeal of a space has become just as important, and sometimes more important than traditional practical considerations.” This shift reflects a broader change in how couples approach their weddings. The ceremony and reception are no longer private family affairs but shareable content that will be viewed, liked, and commented on by hundreds to thousands of people. As a result, venues with distinctive architectural features, dramatic backdrops, and photogenic details have seen demand skyrocket. “Country houses, venues with statement staircases, and spaces with abundant natural light are particularly popular,” Nick notes. “These environments photograph beautifully and provide those ‘wow’ moments that translate perfectly to social media, without overwhelming the couple.” HOW VENUES ARE ADAPTING TO INSTAGRAM CULTURE Smart venue owners are responding to this Instagram-driven demand by strategically enhancing their spaces with social media in mind. According to Nick, this goes far beyond simply having pretty spaces. “To accommodate, many spaces have invested in designated ‘photo opportunities’ throughout the properties,” he explains. “This might be a swing hanging from an ancient oak tree or a flower wall that’s refreshed seasonally. These aren’t just decorative, rather they’re carefully designed Instagram moments that if well done, look completely natural and spontaneous.” THE POWER OF USER-GENERATED CONTENT Perhaps the most significant impact of Images sourced from unsplash.com 32
Instagram on wedding venues is the rise of user-generated content as a marketing powerhouse. Traditional advertising has been largely replaced by the authentic images newlyweds share from their big- day celebrations. “When a couple posts photos from their wedding and tags our venue, they’re essentially providing a testimonial to their entire network,” says Nick. “That organic reach is invaluable. We’ve had couples book with us purely because they saw a friend’s wedding photos on Instagram and fell in love with the space.” Many venues now actively encourage this user-generated content by creating unique hashtags, offering incentives for tagging the venue, and even featuring couples’ photos on their official accounts. This creates a symbiotic relationship: couples get the pleasure of being featured on a popular wedding venue account, while venues benefit from fresh, authentic content that resonates with prospective couples. THE PRESSURE TO PERFORM: WHEN INSTAGRAM EXPECTATIONS MEET REALITY While Instagram has created tremendous opportunities for venues, it has also introduced new challenges and pressures. Nick is candid about the potential downsides. “We’ve noticed that some couples spend so much time planning for the perfect Instagram shots that they forget to actually enjoy their wedding,” he observes. “There’s pressure to recreate specific aesthetics they’ve seen online, sometimes at the expense of what they genuinely want or what works best for their celebration.” “Our role has evolved to include managing these expectations,” Nick explains. “We show couples how to achieve beautiful photos while maintaining authenticity and ensuring they don’t sacrifice the experience for the content.” SEASONAL AESTHETICS AND TRENDING STYLES Instagram has dramatically accelerated the pace of wedding trend cycles. Styles that once remained popular for years now shift seasonally, driven by what’s currently performing well on social media. “We’ve seen rustic barn weddings give way to minimalist industrial spaces, which then evolved into romantic garden parties, and now we’re in an era of maximalist, moody aesthetics,” notes Nick. “Each shift is directly traceable to what’s trending on Instagram and other visual platforms.” The most successful venues, according to Nick, are those with classic, versatile spaces that can be dressed to match current trends rather than those locked into a specific style. THE DEMOCRATISATION OF VENUE DISCOVERY On the positive side, Instagram has democratised venue discovery in ways that benefit both couples and venues. Previously, couples typically found venues through traditional advertising, wedding fairs, or word-of-mouth recommendations, which heavily favoured established venues with large marketing budgets. “Instagram has levelled the playing field,” says Nick. “A smaller, boutique venue with beautiful spaces and strong visual content can now compete with major established venues.” SOCIAL MEDIA 33
VIRTUAL VENUE TOURS AND DIGITALFIRST EXPERIENCES Instagram has also transformed how couples initially explore venues. The traditional approach of booking in-person tours of multiple locations has been supplemented and sometimes replaced by digital discovery. “Couples now typically do extensive Instagram research before even contacting us,” Nick explains. “They’ve already ‘experienced’ the venue through our feed, stories, highlights, and reels. By the time they reach out, they have a clear vision of whether our space fits their aesthetic.” It also requires savvy venues to keep their social media game strong and vibrant. THE ECONOMICS OF INSTAGRAMDRIVEN DEMAND The Instagram effect has had tangible economic impacts on wedding venues. Properties that successfully leverage social media have seen significant increases in booking inquiries. This creates a new challenge: venues must continuously invest in creating fresh, engaging content to maintain visibility in Instagram’s algorithm-driven environment, requiring ongoing resources for photography, content creation, and social media management. INFLUENCER WEDDINGS AND ASPIRATIONAL CONTENT The rise of influencer culture has created a new category of high-profile weddings that serve as both personal celebrations and branded content opportunities. For venues, hosting an influencer wedding can provide unprecedented exposure. “When we host a wedding for a couple with a significant social media following, we know that kind of exposure would cost a fortune in traditional advertising. Some venues even offer discounted rates to influencers specifically for this marketing.” But this dynamic also raises questions about authenticity and the commercialisation of weddings. The line between personal celebration and content creation becomes blurred when sponsors, product placements, and promotional partnerships enter the picture. LOOKING AHEAD: THE FUTURE OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND VENUES As social media continues to evolve, Nick anticipates further changes in how venues market themselves and what couples prioritise. “We’re already seeing a shift toward video content with the rise of TikTok and Instagram reels,” he notes. “Venues need to think beyond static images and consider how their spaces translate to short-form video. We’re also noticing a counter-movement of couples who want ‘unplugged’ weddings where guests aren’t constantly on their phones. The pendulum may swing back toward more private, intimate celebrations.” Nick also predicts that virtual and augmented reality tools will become more sophisticated, potentially allowing couples to virtually ‘walk through’ venue spaces and visualise their weddings before booking. This could further reduce the need for in-person venue visits while raising expectations for accessible digital presentation. FINDING BALANCE IN THE DIGITAL AGE “Instagram has fundamentally transformed the wedding venue industry, mostly for the better,” concludes Nick. “The most successful weddings are those where couples use Instagram for inspiration and venue discovery but ultimately make choices based on what feels right for them. A beautiful Instagram feed is wonderful, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of genuine connection, personal meaning, or the joy of being present in your own celebration.” 34

The end OF PERFECT We explore how couples are falling out of love with perfection and choosing documentary wedding photography For more than a decade, as social media grew in popularity and became increasingly ingrained in our lives, so too did the desire for polished, Insta-worthy wedding shots. The ultimate goal was to secure images that belonged on the front cover of a luxury magazine. But rather than choosing between polished portraits and authentic moments, today’s couples increasingly want both. They’re looking for photographers who’ll capture their wedding day as it unfolds, rather than a series of carefully staged moments. The rise of documentary photography reflects a need for authenticity and presence, going hand-in-hand with the trend for ultra-personalised big days. Today, the perfect wedding album might include a tear-streaked face, hilarity on the dance floor or the youngest guests running with abandon through the venue’s grounds. FROM PINTEREST TO PRESENCE Social media and its resulting habit of doom-scrolling has caused many to reach the point of perfection fatigue. Today’s couples have grown up exposed to an endless parade of highly curated content from lifestyle to fashion, and of course weddings. Whereas the previous generation might have envisioned their wedding day in the form of scrapbooks, sketches and marked-up magazines, Gen Z-ers naturally gravitate to Pinterest, Instagram and TikTok for their wedspiration. After years spent in the pursuit of perfection, perhaps the pandemic and months spent in isolation reminded us of what matters most. When the wedding industry emerged from lockdown, the trend for more intimate, meaningful wedding days quickly became prevalent, and in the years that followed, this beating heart has remained even though we’re seeing guest numbers begin to grow once more. To reflect these personalised celebrations, there’s a growing demand for photography that showcases candid storytelling, genuine emotion and real moments. A recurring theme we see among our real wedding couples is that many have no desire to spend the moments following their ceremony posing for the camera with an endless parade of carefully planned guest groups. No, they’re far keener to get the party started, and why not? With a documentary photographer at the helm, there’s no need to fear a lack of captured memories of your nearest and dearest. Seeing themselves more as observers, they shoot moments of you and your guests as they unfold. It’s their job to be in the right place at the right time, with the camera pointing in the unsplash.com@jakobowens 42
right direction, to capture every sign of emotion from the key highlights to the intimate moments you missed on the day. All the while, you’re free to be fully present and experience the allimportant day. For many, these are the images that pack the biggest emotional punch, immortalising genuine reactions in a moment that’s fleeting. They’re the ones you’ll look back at in years to come with a genuine smile on your face, not necessarily the ones where you’re all grinning stiffly for the camera. THERE’S BEAUTY IN REALITY Capturing reality doesn’t mean ugly photos! Today’s couples want authenticity that’s beautiful. Documentary photography is a skill, carefully honed over many years and many weddings. It’s knowing where to be at precisely the right moment, shooting it in a split second, and delivering a resulting image that’s as stunning as it is raw. These photographers are truly talented folk. One of the most interesting contradictions in all of this is that documentary photography is often carefully crafted to look effortless. Most documentary photographers today find themselves in demand for full day coverage, with only a short spell during the drinks reception spent on an editorial-style couple shoot. Formal group shots are almost entirely out. So, the resulting album offers the perfect blend of stunning luxury couple images, ready for the wall, along with a story of the day as it unfolded. TECH TROUBLES While technology in the form of social media undoubtedly played its part in the pursuit of perfection, it also influenced “The perfect wedding album might include a tear-streaked face, hilarity on the dance floor...” unsplash.com@genessapana unsplash.com@3tnik unsplash.com@victoriapriessnitz unsplash.com@victoriapriessnitz unsplash.com@timscreate PHOTOGRAPHY 43
photographers in the way they work. Digital photography and editing software mean they have far more flexibility to craft that picture-perfection. With virtually unlimited storage, they can simply keep snapping until they get the one. In the past with film, flash photography and disposable cameras, there was no such luxury – in the words of Eminem, you only get one shot. Full wedding galleries might consist of 50 images rather than today’s standard of 700 to 900 images. Many modern photographers are choosing to go back to the good old days and offer their couples the option to have part of their gallery captured on film. After all, it’s a format that naturally feels emotionally honest, resembling family memories rather than slick professionalism. THE DEMAND FOR CONTENT Content creators seemingly emerged from nowhere over the past couple of years to become a must-have wedding extra. This speaks not only to the continued importance of social media in people’s lives, but also to the need for a much more informal approach. It shows how important wedding photography is, as couples are no longer prepared to wait months for a glimpse of their professional images. They want to relive every moment the very next day, and content creators offer just that. What’s more, they lean into the desire of couples to truly be present on their big day, extending this gesture to their nearest and dearest. With a content creator on hand, there’s no need for bridesmaids and groomsmen to spend the day trapped behind their smartphones. They get to be the subjects rather than the photographers. Content creators were never intended to replace the need for a professional wedding photographer though. While professional photographers remain responsible for creating timeless images to treasure for decades to come, content creators offer something different: instant access to the atmosphere, excitement and behind-the-scenes moments of the day. Perhaps the greatest sign of changing priorities is that couples no longer want wedding photographs that simply show how the day looked. They want images that remind them how it felt. Remember, the new luxury is looking unposed! DOCUMENTARY DEFINED ‘Documentary’ is not so much a description of the visual style but rather the approach. Instead of herding guests and directing shots, your photographer will quietly observe and anticipate, making them much less intrusive by nature. Many have told us their aim is for their couples to forget they’re even there. Where traditional wedding photography focuses on planned moments, formal portraits, and perfect compositions led by the photographer, the documentary style is all about spontaneity, storytelling, and authenticity where the photographer follows. “Many have told us their aim is for their couples to forget they’re even there.” unsplash.com@victoriapriessnitz unsplash.com@pedropulidophotography 44
