New opening in Abergavenny Introducing EdNerat, a women’s coat maker and outfitter based in Abergavenny, South Wales. The boutique, which opened in November 2025, is adjacent to the popular Angel Hotel. It offers stylish occasion wear coats and outfits for mothers and wedding guests. The team cut their patterns twice, once for a smaller cup size and once for a fuller fit, because achieving the perfect fit across the chest and shoulders is key. They offer full bespoke sizing and a toile service where a calico fitting copy is sent to the customer’s home for a five-day trial, with a call available if needed, so that the fit is guaranteed before anything is cut in cloth. The coats do not crease or blow in the wind, and they can be worn long after the wedding. EdNerat are committed to zero waste, and the handmade occasion wear coats and outfits are cut, made and finished by hand in the London workshop, from fabrics woven almost entirely in the British Isles, including brocades, bouclés and fine wools that preserve their shape. The padded hangers are made in Pencoed, and the lavender bags in Abergavenny, with care labels woven at National Weaving in Neath. ednerat.com HENSOL CASTLE REVEALS TOP WEDDING TRENDS Hensol Castle, based in South Wales, recently revealed the top wedding trends for this year. Smaller guest lists, social media content creators and eco-conscious decisions are most popular. The historic castle, which hosts weddings throughout the year, has seen a noticeable shift in how couples plan their big day compared with five years ago, with modern weddings becoming personalised, experience led and social media conscious. There has been a rise in bookings for wedding content creators. Couples are increasingly focused on capturing their day in ways that are perfect for sharing online. Alongside traditional photographers and videographers, many are now hiring dedicated wedding content creators to capture candid, behind-the-scenes moments designed for social media. Intimate guest lists between 40 and 60 have seen a resurgence. Whilst affairs of between 80 and 100 guests remain popular, particularly for couples welcoming travelling guests, there has been a noticeable rise in smaller celebrations. Weekday weddings are also gaining popularity. Thursday and Sunday celebrations are in demand as couples want greater flexibility with dates and better value. To balance budgets, more couples are creating their own décor, table plans and signage, adding a personal touch to their wedding while keeping costs down. Food experiences are replacing traditional buffets. The three-course wedding breakfast is still a favourite, but evening food is evolving. Couples are increasingly choosing interactive dining experiences such as fajita stations or live cooking rather than traditional buffet options. Sustainability is key, with eco-conscious choices becoming more common, from biodegradable flowers to couples selling on homemade décor after their wedding Flexible fashion for bridal parties is essential, with bridesmaids increasingly wearing different styles or colours of dresses within the same palette. Elegant black-tie weddings are also on the rise. Looking ahead, the team at Hensol Castle predicts more couples opting for sophisticated black-tie celebrations, combining timeless elegance with a modern approach to wedding traditions. Claire Hill Designs unveils the Lichen Gemstone Collection Cardiff-based Claire Hill Designs launches the Lichen Gemstone Collection, perfect for brides, bridesmaids, mums and guests Designer Claire’s philosophy has centred on creating jewellery with meaning, pieces designed not just to be worn, but to be felt. The new Lichen Gemstone Necklace Collection builds on this ethos, offering modern talismans rooted in symbolism, nature and personal connection. Each piece begins its story in Wales, where Claire designs every collection, drawing inspiration from the natural landscape and her belief in jewellery as a form of storytelling. The designs are then brought to life by skilled artisan jewellery makers in Thailand, whose craftsmanship ensures each piece is finished with care, precision and respect for traditional techniques. Using ethically sourced gemstones and recycled precious metals, the collection reflects a commitment to conscious creation, where beauty, meaning and responsibility exist in balance. Each piece is centred around Claire’s signature Lichen motif, representing resilience, growth and connection to nature. Set with ethically sourced gemstones, the necklaces are designed to be worn as everyday talismans. clairehilldesigns.co.uk CARDIFF PET CARER CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF TRUSTED SERVICE The owner of Petpals Cardiff, Maxine Neal, recently celebrated two decades of pet care across the city, having looked after more than 500 animals while building lasting relationships with the owners. What began as a simple ambition has grown into one of Cardiff’s most trusted pet care services, with Maxine becoming a familiar and reassuring presence for pet owners. “When I started back in 2006, I just knew I wanted to work with animals and be outdoors,” she said. “It didn’t feel like a traditional career path at the time – it was more about doing something I genuinely loved every day.” Over time, that passion has evolved into a service built on trust, consistency and genuine care. “I always hoped Petpals Cardiff would be known for reliability and compassion,” Maxine added. “Seeing clients come back year after year – and knowing they feel completely comfortable leaving their pets with me – is the biggest achievement.” At the heart of that success are the relationships Maxine has built, with many clients staying with her for years – and even decades. “Some of my clients are now on their third generation of pets that I’ve cared for, which is really special,” she said. “You’re not just looking after a pet at that point – you’re part of someone’s life.” Petpals is the UK’s longest-established multi-service pet-care specialist, offering a range of bespoke and award-winning services from dog walking and cat visits to pet sitting. Fully trained, insured, uniformed and DBS-checked, Maxine has spent the past 20 years delivering the high standards associated with the Petpals name across the city. Giving back has also remained an important part of Maxine’s work over the years. She has raised funds for charities including Battersea Dogs Home, Dogs Trust, Cancer Research, PDSA and the RSPCA, while also supporting local causes through volunteering. As she marks the 20-year milestone, Maxine chose to celebrate in a way that reflects the relationships she’s built – by sharing a moment to reminisce with her clients and their pets. “I wanted to do something a bit personal to say thank you,” she said. “So I had cupcakes and Welsh cakes made for my clients, along with dog-friendly biscuits for the pups – handmade by Aunty Max. It was a really lovely way to celebrate with everyone who’s been part of the journey, both old and new. I feel truly grateful to all the clients, past and present, who have supported us over the years.” petpals.com/area/cardiff Swansea Bay hosts summer events On the 25th - 26th July, the Wales Airshow at Swansea Bay returns, featuring modern military jets and helicopters with historic aircraft and aerobatic performances. New this year is Wales Airshow: Afterburn, a sunset event with pyrotechnic helicopter displays, illuminated aerobatics, RAF Typhoon afterburners, and a spectacular finale featuring 200 drones and fireworks. Visitors can also enjoy ground displays, live entertainment, family activities and delicious food stalls. The Swansea Sea Festival takes place from 8th - 9th August. Taking over venues across the waterfront, the free two-day event offers craft stalls, live music and maritime displays. A programme of talks and workshops will also take place and it’s timed to coincide with National Maritime Week. On 25th - 27th August, Outdoor Theatre returns to Oystermouth Castle with a programme of open-air productions including Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance. visitswanseabay.com 10

Spring vibes Rachel and Mark’s March wedding enjoyed the backdrop of Canada Lodge and Lake in Cardiff Images courtesy of Capture The Moment Rachel and Mark met via the dating site Match.com. “We started talking and enjoyed our first date a week later, and it’s been a wonderful journey ever since,” they tell us. “We had both been married before, so it was a surprise to find our soulmate.” Mark proposed during a trip to Canada. “He got down on one knee overlooking the sea on Vancouver Island with a Haribo ring,” Rachel says. “That was in September 2025, and we got married on 7th March 2026 – we didn’t expect to be able to plan a wedding in that time, but it all just fell into place.” The couple searched for venues and liked the name Canada Lodge and Lake because it was relevant to their engagement, so they arranged a viewing. “We knew immediately that we wanted to get married there,” they tell us. “The backdrop of water, wooden decor, fireplaces, lodges for our guests to stay in and the opportunity to enjoy breakfast together the morning after were great - it ticked all the boxes. The staff were so experienced, offering attention to detail with a desire to provide the best day for us, and the food tasted amazing, and we’ve both got high standards being Italian!” The couple decorated their day with plenty of eucalyptus and gold accents. “We also had white roses, including in the bouquets, teamed with trailing foliage,” Rachel explains. “We had a 1 pm ceremony followed by a canapé, prosecco and Peroni reception. This was followed by the wedding breakfast at 4 pm.” The couple chose a menu of leek and potato soup or beef shin bonbon to start, followed by fish pie or a roast beef dinner with apple and raspberry crumble or sticky toffee pudding to finish. “Our guests had pre-chosen their menu choices via their invites,” Rachel tells us. “There were vegan and gluten-free options, and we had so many compliments about the food.” Rachel chose two dresses from JJ’s House. “I liked them both, and because they were in the clearance section and well within budget, I kept them both,” she tells us. “One fitted immediately and was my back-up choice if I didn’t feel comfortable in the other style, which removed the stress. It also meant that I had a more comfortable dress to change into for the dinner and dancing!” Mark, along with his best man and Rachel’s son, who gave her away, wore dark green tweed suits teamed with russet-coloured ties and accessories. “Our bridesmaids, including my daughter, who was our maid of honour, wore eucalyptus-coloured dresses in stretch satin,” Rachel says. “We chose the colour and material type, and then gave the four of them the choice of style within that colour and material. Finding one style to flatter them all was impossible, so I wanted everyone to feel comfortable.” For their evening reception, the couple hired a DJ and planned a playlist to suit every guest. “We also had our speeches captured on video, which we are grateful for, because we have re-watched them many times since our special day!” REAL WEDDINGS 19
“ ” “The moment I turned around to see Rachel walking into the ceremony on the arm of her son, I was overcome with emotion and the photos prove it!” - Mark 20

Paige and Ryan met via the online dating app Tinder. “Ryan was in the Royal Navy based in Portsmouth, and I was visiting family there,” Paige tells us. “After speaking for a few weeks, he travelled to Newport, where I lived, from Portsmouth to meet me for a coffee. We talked for several hours, and the rest is history.” Ryan proposed on March 18, 2023. “I was sitting on the sofa in my pyjamas, and he asked me to close my eyes before running upstairs,” Paige says. “When I opened them, he was down on one knee. He knew that I didn’t want a big proposal; I wanted something intimate, just the two of us, so this was perfect.” Paige wanted a fairytale-inspired wedding, and the location needed to suit family travelling from Portsmouth and the Cotswolds. “While researching online, Hensol Castle provided us with the wow factor,” Paige tells us. “It was the first and only 28
venue that we viewed, and we both knew this was our wedding venue on arrival. It’s a stunning setting, with the castle and the nearby lake looking so picturesque. It could seat plenty of guests, and due to us both having large families, this was ideal.” The couple got married in November, so they chose an autumnal orange, yellow and green colour theme. “Rhian from Francis Floral Designs created my floral headpiece, the blossom trees displayed in the breakfast room, our table centrepieces, and the flowers that decorated the chairs,” Paige tells us. “She also made the archway backdrop that was placed in the ceremony room, which looked fantastic. We created our own table sign and welcome mirror, which also looked really effective.” The couple had a delicious three-course wedding breakfast, where their guests chose from a menu featuring highlights including pork belly and confit duck rillettes to start, pan-roasted chicken breast as the main course, and salted caramel brownie for dessert. “During the evening, we had a barbecue buffet which included mini beef burgers, chicken skewers and barbecue pulled pork baps with potato wedges, coleslaw, potato salad and tomato, cucumber and red onion salad,” Paige says. Paige had a bespoke dress made, teamed with an elegant veil. “The talented Samm Buca at Pink Butterfly Brides The Wedding Dress Shop helped me design my perfect dress, and she also hand-painted Doc Marten boots to tie in with my wedding dress. She went above and beyond to help me create my dream dress, and I would recommend her to any bride-to-be,” Paige tells us. “I have always been a bit alternative so I knew that I wanted something that was traditional with my own twist added to the design.” Ryan and his groomsmen wore navy three-piece suits while the couple’s three bridesmaids picked their own dresses from JJ’s House in the shade called bronzer. “They each chose their own style of dress because I wanted them to feel as comfortable as possible on the day,” Paige says. Throughout their special day, Paige and Ryan had a selfie pod available for their guests to experience. “The team from iDoo photo booths set up the pod in front of a backdrop that Ryan and I handmade, which included photographs of all our guests and ourselves,” Paige tells us. “We also made our own crisp wall and sweetie table. We hired the musician duo Bertie & Jonny, a violinist and guitarist, who played during our ceremony and up until we entered the wedding breakfast,” Paige says. “Being able to celebrate the best day of our lives with our loved ones gathered around us is something that we will both cherish forever. Our parents were beaming with pride all day.” - Paige and Ryan REAL WEDDINGS 29

New RULES We look at why modern couples are rewriting the traditional hen and stag celebration New booking data from holiday and party house booking company Kate & Tom’s (kateandtoms.com) got us thinking: Is the age of gendered pre-wedding celebrations coming to an end? We decided to explore. Andy Brooker, travel expert at Kate & Tom’s, weighs in on the everchanging landscape of engagement celebrations: “It’s fascinating to see the cultural insight in the data. We’ve seen a shift in the way we’re celebrating. There’s an increased appetite for group getaways, including multi-generational stays that prioritise quality time and create core memories. Whether that’s a group stay with the full works of facilities, a heated pool, hot tub, yoga room, or games room with karaoke set-up as the number one priority, we’re moving away from the one-size-fits-all hen do and stag do. It all really boils down to personal preference.” A SOBERING THOUGHT The data points to a shift towards celebrations becoming more intentional than ever. Couples and their loved ones are creating something more memorable rather than spontaneous and taking real enjoyment in getting together to celebrate a pre-wedding milestone in its own right. So, how can we explain the migration away from the traditional, more raucous ‘last night of freedom’ or ‘final fling before the ring’ mentality? According to the Office for National Statistics, the median age for men and women entering into marriage in 2023 remained among the highest median ages recorded, at 34.8 years and 33 years respectively. As we all know, the older you get the worse the hangovers are! So, could this explain the avoidance of alcohol-fuelled nights out? Not necessarily, as data from the most recent NHS Health Survey for England shows that young people in particular are shunning the booze. Some 39 per cent of young men say they abstain from alcohol, while 31 per cent of women claim to be non-drinkers. It’s an ongoing trend among Gen Z and millennials, which may be attributed to modern attitudes towards a wellness culture and sober-curious trend. MUTUAL FRIENDS While overall reduction in enthusiasm towards alcohol may explain the shift away from the nights on the town we’re used to seeing, it tells us less about the move towards mixed gender and multi-generational, all-inclusive celebrations. Perhaps we need to look to the LGBTQ+ community where joint celebrations have long been more common as traditional gender splits simply don’t make sense and friendship Getty Images unsplash.com@sebastiancoman 38
groups overlap more fluidly. Having seen how much fun is to be had by combining groups are heterosexual couples now choosing to adopt the same policy? The stats on median marriage age have a lot to tell us about lifestyle though. In previous generations when people often married in their early-to-mid 20s, at that stage friendship groups were still quite separate, with gendered socialising more common. So, the ‘last night of freedom’ idea carried more cultural weight. By their early-to-mid-30s, when most couples are now choosing to tie the knot, friendship groups are naturally more established and often shared, changing the feel of what a pre-wedding celebration might be. Many couples of this age group will often holiday together as mutual friends with other couples, and professionally it’s the norm to socialise in mixed groups. Indeed, modern relationships increasingly function socially as partnerships rather than as parallel lives. So, it’s becoming easier to see why the ‘last night of freedom’ narrative feels outdated. Traditional stag and hen culture was built around the idea that marriage represented the end of youthful independence, but with couples choosing to marry later, that stage has now long since passed. This mentality naturally resonates less with couples who have already lived together for many years – they own their own home together and share finances, many will even co-parent before they take the next step into marriage. The transition into married life today is often far less dramatic, becoming a more formal celebration of an existing partnership. So, it’s natural to want to celebrate it differently. The emotional tone then shifts from ‘farewell to single life’ to a ‘celebration of community’. THE FINANCIAL REALITY Marrying later in life also means couples have more financial stability with potentially more demanding jobs, so the appetite for a chaotic weekend or activity is greatly diminished. By this point in life, people have developed a much stronger preference for how they spend their leisure time. The appeal of budget flights to Ibiza, nightclub crawls and crazy costumes is far outweighed by that of a boutique hotel, countryside rental or intimate dinner party. With this more curated, relaxed vibe comes the automatic possibility of the celebration being more inclusive across all ages with invitations for the parents, siblings and even children. Alongside the changing attitudes towards the meaning of marriage, there’s also a lot to be said about the influence of the burgeoning cost of living crisis. Weddings are expensive enough. Does this need to be exacerbated by multiple satellite events? For couples and their friends, separate hen and stag celebrations can feel financially excessive when there’s already wedding travel, accommodation, outfits and gifts to be considered. When friendship groups overlap anyway, this makes even less sense. A shared celebration consolidates costs into a single trip or event, making it much easier to manage financially and practically. unsplash.com@yoavaziz unsplash.com@curatedlifestyle HEN & STAG 39
Your perfect sten Having looked into the ‘why’, perhaps we’ve persuaded you to ditch tradition in favour of a more inclusive pre-wedding celebration shared with your nearest and dearest. So, let’s explore what your very own ‘sten’ do might look like, with some suggestions from the adventurous to the laid-back. To keep costs in check, we’re keeping our feet firmly planted in good old Blighty! With so many diverse options on your doorstep, why go anywhere else? ADVENTURE SEEKERS For lovers of the great outdoors who prefer adventure activities and getting stuck in, there are some fantastic opportunities available for a great weekend getaway. What about a hiking and wild swimming weekend in the Lake District? Organise guided hikes, paddleboarding, sauna sessions and wild swimming for the daytime, followed by cosy pub dinners and relaxing in a comfy cottage or lodge in the evenings. This works well for any gender and age range as guests can choose their intensity level and for those wishing to bow out of physical activity altogether, there are plenty of more leisurely options available back at base, such as reading by the fire or heading to the pub, before you all come together again for the evening. It’s a cosy social celebration rather than a chaotic one. unsplash.com/@catbassano SLOW TRAVELLERS For those who enjoy a slower pace of life and can think of nothing better than spending quality time with loved ones over a packed itinerary, consider a countryside house weekend in the Cotswolds. Think long-table dinners, leisurely strolls between villages, pub lunches, board games, evenings around a fire pit and even the occasional spa treatment. Here, there’s no pressure for constant group participation, as people will naturally separate and regroup throughout the day. No forced fun here, just relaxed convivial vibes, spending time in harmony with each other. unsplash.com/@hugo1951 CREATIVE SOULS Getting creative together works particularly well in the context of a sten event as these types of activities allow natural conversation to flow and give you all a sense of shared memory-making. For the foodies among you, consider hiring a private chef and hosting an evening of fine dining, heading out to a cocktail-making workshop, wine-blending experience or a cookery class. Why not get arty with an afternoon of pottery painting or a flower arranging workshop? Guests leave with physical memories instead of hangovers! Creative stens replace passive partying with collaborative participation, so if you fancy yourselves budding detectives, a murder mystery night could be for you. They’re packed with spectacle and laughs, allowing you to connect and create memories to last a lifetime. Escape rooms are also great for embracing your inner Poirot. LIFE’S LUXURIES You may decide to skip the pre-wedding bash and invest the budget into a longer wedding celebration. With the trend for weekend weddings growing, more and more venues are offering three-day packages allowing you to gather your nearest and dearest the night before the wedding for a ‘rehearsal’ dinner and stay to share breakfast the day after the main event. If you’re set on keeping the two celebrations apart but you love the concept, a luxury sten weekend could match your vision. Curate a luxury itinerary of private chef dining and wine tasting, or, for those who prefer something a little more boho, how about a luxury picnic styled to perfection, with grazing options aplenty? The key is privacy, comfort and above all, connection. unsplash.com@nicolesherrero unsplash.com/@3tnik 40
