CAKES 57  A SLICE OF THE ACTION We meet London’s best wedding cake designers W hile cakes have always been a staple at weddings, they’re coming into their own recently with showstopping, theatrical creations becoming the centrepiece of the day. We wanted to introduce you to some of the capital’s best bakers – the people who can bring a sweet delight to your big day… MEET MEGAN COLLINS OF BLOSSOM & CRUMB Where did you journey into cake creation begin? I worked in theatre for five years, before going back to the drawing board. I’d always been a foodie and was inspired by design, and it occurred to me that I could combine both those interests. I did a cake-decorating course and never looked back. What’s your favourite thing about working in the wedding industry? As a romantic at heart, I still find it a huge honour to be part of a couple’s big day. I’ve always valued the industry for a genuine sense of community among suppliers. I’ve experienced such kindness from other small businesses. What sweet treat do you turn to for comfort? I actually have more of a savoury palate, but I do love ice cream. Now I think about it, I also find it very hard to say no to a Crosstown doughnut! What’s your top wedding planning tip? Remember that it’s your day. Family and friends will have emotion invested too, so don’t completely ignore their ideas, but if a tradition doesn’t feel comfortable, then leave it out! For me, it was a natural progression from celebration cakes. I always enjoyed making flowers and pretty, feminine touches – wedding cakes just ticked all the boxes for me. What’s your favourite thing about working in the wedding industry? It’s wonderful that I’m meeting people who are celebrating the happiest time of their life. I enjoy going out of my usual comfort zone and getting excited about designs that are in the pipeline. What sweet treat do you turn to for comfort? I can’t resist homemade macarons. What’s your top wedding planning tip? If you like the work of a certain supplier, whether that’s a cake maker, florist or photographer, then book them quickly to avoid disappointment. If they’re good at what they do, they’ll get snapped up fast. Visit www.cakemagicuk.com www.blossomandcrumb.com
