One minute we were reaching for the sun cream and an ice-cold drink, and now we’re looking ahead to September and October – two of my favourite months for weddings. There’s something wonderfully romantic about an early autumn celebration. The days can still be warm enough for an outdoor ceremony or drinks in the sunshine, while the cooler evenings bring the perfect excuse for candlelight, cosy corners and a packed dancefloor. And then there’s the scenery – golden light, changing leaves and a colour palette that seems to have been created especially with weddings in mind. Sanyukta Shrestha named Wedding Boutique of the Year 2026 London-based bridal designer Sanyukta Shrestha has been named Wedding Boutique of the Year at the London Wedding Awards 2026, celebrating 15 years of pioneering eco-conscious bridal fashion. Born in Nepal and now based in London, Shrestha launched her eponymous label in 2011, long before sustainability became a defining conversation within luxury fashion. St. James’ Court Unveils new chapter for weddings St. James’ Court, A Taj Hotel has unveiled the final stage of a multi-year transformation, introducing newly redesigned event spaces and a refreshed ballroom for weddings, celebrations and private occasions in the heart of Westminster. Visit stjamescourthotel.co.uk BIRLEY BAKERY’S TARTE TROPÉZIENNE GETS THE WEDDING CAKE TREATMENT A taste of the South of France is making its way into London weddings, as Birley Bakery introduces a spectacular tiered version of its much-loved Tarte Tropézienne. Since opening in Chelsea Green in late 2022, Birley Bakery has become synonymous with the French classic – a light brioche cake scented with orange blossom, filled with diplomat cream and finished with pearl sugar. The bakery has now sold approximately 35,000 individual slices, 6,600 whole Classic Tropéziennes and 5,500 Raspberry Tropéziennes, with sales increasing by 25 per cent year on year. Now, the signature creation has been transformed into an elegant celebration cake, available in configurations of up to five tiers and designed specifically with weddings and large gatherings in mind. Created under the direction of Executive Head of Bakery and Pastry Vincent Zanardi, the Birley Bakery interpretation puts a lighter spin on the traditional Saint-Tropez recipe. The brioche is baked before being generously brushed with orange blossom syrup, then filled with fragrant diplomat cream and finished with pearl sugar. Couples can choose the classic version or add raspberries for an extra fruity twist. The five-tier cake serves up to 46 guests, with tiers ranging from a 14cm cake serving four to a 30cm tier serving 16. Additional slices or cakes can also be added to cater for larger celebrations. With its understated finish and delicate flavour, the Tropézienne offers a refreshing alternative to a traditional decorated wedding cake – particularly for couples looking to bring a relaxed French aesthetic to their reception. Each tiered cake takes around four to five hours to assemble, while short-notice orders can be accommodated with as little as four days’ notice. An experienced registrar’s perspective on modern weddings, personal ceremonies and marriage law reform Lorna Andrews, of Surrey County Council Registration Service, explains why a legally recognised ceremony can still be personal, meaningful and completely your own. If you’re reading Your London & Surrey Wedding, chances are you’re either planning your own wedding or working within the wedding industry. Either way, you may recently have come across discussions about marriage law reform and what potential changes could mean for couples in England and Wales. Alongside those conversations, you’ve probably also seen growing debate about registrars, celebrants and the role each plays in modern weddings. “As someone who has spent many years marrying couples, I felt it was important to offer a registrar’s perspective. “Much of the recent discussion has focused on what registrars supposedly cannot do. Unfortunately, some of the information being shared online simply doesn’t reflect the reality of the ceremonies many registrars conduct every week. Having conducted hundreds of weddings, my colleagues and I will tell you that our experience is often very different from the picture being painted. “Yes, marriage in England and Wales operates within a legal framework, and yes, many aspects of that framework have their roots in legislation that has existed for a very long time. But while the law provides the structure, registrar-led ceremonies have moved with the times. “Perhaps the biggest misconception I encounter is the suggestion that registrars simply deliver the same script, in the same way, for every couple. Nothing could be further from the truth. “I remember an assessor observing two ceremonies I conducted on the same day, at the same venue. Afterwards, she commented on how completely different they felt. The explanation was simple: the couples themselves were completely different. GOOD REGISTRARS ADAPT “We listen. We read the information couples provide before their ceremonies. We respond to the atmosphere in the room. We are experienced. We are chameleons, adjusting our delivery to suit the people standing in front of us. “Over the years, I’ve met every type of couple imaginable. Some dream of large celebrations surrounded by hundreds of family and friends. Others prefer something intimate with just a handful of guests. Some embrace every wedding tradition possible, while others like to do things entirely their own way. “What they all have in common is that they want a day that feels personal. The same is true of venues. Whether it’s a register office, country house hotel, golf club, pub or somewhere in between, talented venue teams and creative wedding suppliers help bring those visions to life every day. “Of course, some couples would love to marry in a woodland clearing, on a mountaintop or perhaps while ziplining across a quarry. And, if I’m honest, that sounds great fun. But not every couple wants that. Or perhaps they do for their honeymoon, but not for their ceremony. Many simply want a meaningful, personal and legally recognised ceremony surrounded by the people they love. “The suggestion that legal ceremonies are somehow devoid of personality doesn’t reflect what I see every week. Every wedding I have attended as a registrar has been deeply personal. The dress, the suit, the flowers, the music, the rings, the readings and the people chosen to participate all tell part of the couple’s story. “Contrary to what some couples may have been led to believe, registrar-led ceremonies offer far more flexibility than many realise. Couples can choose readings, music and ring exchanges. You can absolutely include personal vows alongside the legal wording. “And if you’d like your ceremony to begin with a personalised introduction telling the story of how you met, where the proposal happened or what makes your relationship unique, written by you, well, guess what? Many registrars are more than happy to tell that story. I’ve heard touching poems written by siblings, A registrar’s right to reply “ 20
heartfelt tributes from proud parents and favourite song lyrics performed by close friends. “If you want your granny to be your flowergirl, your best friend to give you away and your entrance music to be Meatloaf, you can absolutely do that. If you want your cousin to read from your favourite childhood novel, that’s wonderful. If you want one ring, two rings or no rings at all, the choice is yours. I’ve seen hidden ring bearers, surprise readings, beloved family pets carrying rings and even the occasional puppet. The best part of the job is seeing the many different ways couples make their ceremony their own. “The legal framework does not prevent personality. It simply provides the structure within which a marriage becomes legally recognised. There are, of course, some words that every couple must say. These are the legal vows. The declaratory words confirm that there is no lawful reason why the marriage cannot take place. The contracting words are those through which the legal marriage is formed. Far from being an inconvenience or a boring formality, these are often the most significant words spoken during the entire ceremony. This is the moment when you could hear a pin drop. After all, these are the words that transform two people from an engaged couple into a married one. “Long after the confetti has settled, the flowers have faded and the last dance has been danced, those words remain the foundation of a marriage recognised in law. “You may choose to declare your love to one another on a mountaintop, beside the sea or in a family garden, and those moments can be incredibly meaningful. But under the current law, unless the legal requirements have also been fulfilled, that couple will not be legally married. “For many couples, that legal aspect matters enormously. This is where registrars occupy a unique position within the wedding industry. We are public officials carrying out a legal function on behalf of society, ensuring marriages are entered into lawfully and with appropriate safeguards for everyone involved. At the same time, we are helping couples celebrate one of the most important days of their lives. Those two responsibilities sit comfortably alongside one another. “While registrars work for local authorities rather than directly for couples, that doesn’t mean we care any less about the experience. On the contrary, many registrars have devoted entire careers to helping people mark life’s most significant milestones with warmth, professionalism and genuine enthusiasm. CELEBRANTS AND REGISTRARS CURRENTLY FULFIL DIFFERENT ROLES “A celebrant provides a private service chosen by a couple. A registrar provides the legal authority required to create a marriage recognised by law. Neither role needs to diminish the other. “We feel there is room for everyone within the wedding industry because different couples want different things. Some are attracted to the flexibility celebrants can offer. Others value the reassurance of a legally binding ceremony conducted by experienced public officials. Most simply want a ceremony that feels authentic, memorable and right for them. “There are practical advantages to the registrar model, too. Many couples won’t meet the registrar conducting their ceremony until shortly before the wedding begins. However, behind every ceremony is an entire team working to ensure everything runs smoothly. If illness, a family emergency or any other unforeseen circumstance arises, another trained and experienced registrar can step in. The ceremony can still take place and the couple’s day remains protected. “I can’t speak for every registration service in the country, but I do know that across England and Wales there are hundreds of dedicated, skilled and compassionate professionals carrying out this work every day. What we share is a commitment to helping couples begin married life with confidence, dignity and joy. FINAL THOUGHTS “As Parliament continues to consider future reforms to marriage law, there will undoubtedly be lively debate. Debate is healthy and helpful. Ask any couple married by Surrey’s legal registrars and I hope they will tell you their ceremony was both personal and legal. Both professional and heartfelt. Registrars do not need, nor want, to disparage others in order to explain our value. The Instagram effect ON WEDDING VENUES How social media is reshaping the industry In an era where a single photograph can reach millions of viewers within hours, wedding venues are experiencing a seismic shift in how they attract couples and showcase their spaces. Instagram has evolved from a simple photo-sharing app into the most powerful marketing tool the wedding industry has ever seen and it’s fundamentally changing what couples look for in a venue. We spoke with Nick from Country House Weddings (countryhouseweddings. co.uk) to explore how social media, particularly Instagram and TikTok is reshaping venue selection, design, and the entire wedding experience. THE RISE OF INSTAGRAM-WORTHY VENUES “Ten years ago, couples primarily chose venues based on capacity, location, and price,” explains Nick “Today, the first question whether said or not is really: ‘How Instagram-worthy is it?’. The visual appeal of a space has become just as important, and sometimes more important than traditional practical considerations.” This shift reflects a broader change in how couples approach their weddings. The ceremony and reception are no longer private family affairs but shareable content that will be viewed, liked, and commented on by hundreds to thousands of people. As a result, venues with distinctive architectural features, dramatic backdrops, and photogenic details have seen demand skyrocket. “Country houses, venues with statement staircases, and spaces with abundant natural light are particularly popular,” Nick notes. “These environments photograph beautifully and provide those ‘wow’ moments that translate perfectly to social media, without overwhelming the couple.” HOW VENUES ARE ADAPTING TO INSTAGRAM CULTURE Smart venue owners are responding to this Instagram-driven demand by strategically enhancing their spaces with social media in mind. According to Nick, this goes far beyond simply having pretty spaces. “To accommodate, many spaces have invested in designated ‘photo opportunities’ throughout the properties,” he explains. “This might be a swing hanging from an ancient oak tree or a flower wall that’s refreshed seasonally. These aren’t just decorative, rather they’re carefully designed Instagram moments that if well done, look completely natural and spontaneous.” THE POWER OF USER-GENERATED CONTENT Perhaps the most significant impact of Images sourced from unsplash.com 28
Instagram on wedding venues is the rise of user-generated content as a marketing powerhouse. Traditional advertising has been largely replaced by the authentic images newlyweds share from their big- day celebrations. “When a couple posts photos from their wedding and tags our venue, they’re essentially providing a testimonial to their entire network,” says Nick. “That organic reach is invaluable.
