Your East Midlands Wedding - Dec/Jan 2019 (Issue 35)

60 Classic flavours will remain popular in 2020, with Victoria sponge, carrot and walnut, and salted caramel always amongst my couples’ top choices. Braver newlyweds-to-be wanting something a bit different may try a more daring cocktail-inspired cake. Next season’s colour palette will be earthy tones, soft mauves, mint and sage. The ever-popular metallics will continue to feature but will tend to lean away from gold tones with silver accents becoming the firm favourite with 2020 couples. My top three design trend predictions for 2020 will be all white textured cakes with white florals and fern foliage. The modern classic naked and semi-naked cakes will get an edgy feel when combined with silver metallics and a floral colour palette of mauves and mint green. Couples will hopefully continue to push the boundaries with daring gravity-defying cake requests which reflects them as a couple – just the kind of challenge I love at The Wonderful Cake Company. Laura Parish | The Wonderful Cake Company | thewonderfulcakecompany.co.uk Big, bold, beautiful and dripping in chocolate – next year showstopping wedding cakes will pair timeless flavours with striking chocolate work. Think dramatic shards cascading across three tiers of Belgian chocolate sponge, thoughtfully adorned with handmade truffles, bonbons, macarons and delicate piping work.   The company’s founder Ellie Wharrad says, “We love to put our spin on current cake trends. Icing shards and extravagant piping work have been high in demand this year and we use chocolate as our medium to create the same visual effect. Often people can’t tell what our sculptures are made from and they're blown away to discover it’s chocolate!” Ophelia King, Ellie Wharrad | Studio Chocolate |  studio-chocolate.co.uk We find couples are putting more emphasis on the overall picture of their wedding day, looking for a seamless vision by asking their suppliers to coordinate and collaborate. Here we worked with suppliers with the brief of styled botanical and took inspiration from the venue's new décor, gold chandeliers and used a palette of white, gold and natural greens. With our four-tierd hoop cake as the centrepiece, flanked by a macaron tower and stack of chocolate brownie, all sat on clear plinths in front of a lace frame. Since Meghan and Harry opted for their deconstructed elderflower and lemon wedding cake, this style and flavour has become very popular.
