Your Surrey Wedding- August/September 2020 (Issue 84)

PICK OF THE BUNCH Q – We’re trying to decide what time of year to get married but can’t make a decision. What flowers are available each season and are there any ways of saving money? Not all flowers are available all year round, and although we can import them from other countries, the quality may not be as good, or the price may be higher. Save money by purchasing more expensive options for your bouquet and cheaper versions for your centrepieces. ❤ Particular shades may be limited, so I would use diamantés or ribbons to add colour to your flowers. ❤ There are lots of wonderful options available in spring, including lisianthus, roses, alstroemeria, tulips, daffodils, hyacinth and anemone. Eucalyptus isn’t at its best this time of year, but other greenery such as hard ruscus are available. ❤ Peonies, garden roses, sweet Williams, hydrangeas, delphiniums, gladiolus and dahlias are in bloom in summer. ❤ As we enter autumn, hypericums, rose hip berries, squashes, brassicas, asters, cosmos and sunflowers become popular. While roses, lisianthus, gerberas, carnations, orchids, hypericum berries and chrysanthemums are better suited for winter. Naked and semi-naked cakes have been a popular trend for the past few years. It’s great for clients who don’t like soft icing, and can be decorated with fresh flowers, herbs and fruit. The individual tiers can be flavoured differently to give your guests a variety to choose from. Another trend is buttercream bakes. These are suitable for all weddings, but if you’re getting married in the summer make sure it’s stored in a very cool place. You can adorn your bake with blooms, fruit, sugar decorations and quirky toppers. Iced (sugar paste) cakes are still popular and marbled patterns with metallic elements can be a great way of contrasting your décor. Do you have any ideas of how to style the space? Whether you’re looking for a traditional British summer or something more exotic, there are plenty of ways you can incorporate the time of year into your special day. A pastel theme or bold, bright colours will help you achieve both these looks. ❤ Start with your tables and centrepieces. You could opt for a beautiful beach captured within a glass fishbowl with sand, stones and shells. ❤ Place your favourite ice cream sundae in the centre of the tables on top of a martini glass made using fabrics and pompom sprinkles. ❤ Why not share your love of travelling by incorporating photos of your holidays? Each table could be a different destination with a themed centrepiece, and the place cards could be personalised airline tickets. ❤ What’s more British than bunting? Pair it with traditional signage and candy stripe backdrops for your sweet cart. ❤ Wimbledon dominates most screens for two weeks every June, so add a nod to the summer staple by creating a strawberry and cream cart with all the toppings. ❤ Entertain the children with a separate play area with activities ranging from beach balls, sandcastles through to hopscotch and ring toss. ❤ Create a photo area with summer-inspired props such as buckets and spades, balls, umbrellas and a cardboard frame.
