Kim is a lover of Christmas so it seemed only apt that her sailor boyfriend, Stephen, should propose on Christmas Eve and their wedding should have a yuletide theme.
Recalling the moment he popped the question, Kim says: “We were walking passed the church I grew up near on our way to Christmas drinks when Stephen went down on one knee and produced a box with a Tiffany diamond ring inside. It was an utter surprise.”
They knew they wanted a barn-style venue, and on visiting The Great Barn at Aynho, they knew it ticked all the boxes for bringing their Christmas vision to life with its open log fires, beams and exposed brick.
“We visited it in summer but could easily visualise our winter theme and spent every Saturday night on the run up to the wedding creating Christmas baubles, reindeer table names, festive bunting and fir cone name places. Our wedding invites were all wrapped like presents and tied with ribbon and I walked down the aisle, as a married woman, to Maria Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You,” says Kim. Here, she shares the magic of their big day.
“We had the military, Father Christmas and most importantly the people we love the most there. No one else would have had that exact group of people at their wedding.” – Kim
Stephen is a Petty Officer in the Royal Navy and wore his No 1 uniform.
I chose fur capes to keep the little girls warm and go with the Christmas theme. They carried wands with roses attached.
Stephen’s grandma, Anne, made the cake which had red poinsettias and candy canes on it.
The favours were clear baubles for the ladies and contained meaningful messages inside. It took me a long time to think about the words but was quite lovely thinking about different relationships with the female guests and funny stories and phrases that connected us. The boys had miniature bottles of rum as a nod to Stephen's naval career.
Father Christmas turned up with a present for each child. Their gifts contained things to keep them amused during the wedding breakfast.
