Food is my favourite subject, so when the time comes around to put together our annual catering feature, it’s always a joy. The reason it’s so exciting to write is the sheer wealth of options available across the county, which never ceases to amaze me. When I think of wedding food, I must admit it can trigger thoughts of weddings from back in the day, where we sat down to a depressing meal of bland chicken or bust! But I soon remember, wedding catering isn’t like that anymore... mercifully! While the range of choice might make the process slightly more complicated, it is nevertheless, 100 per cent worth it. So, with the help of local caterers, we’ve put together a guide that ensures all your questions are answered. Now, more so than say 20 or 30 years ago weddings are all about their couples. There are so many more ways to bring about the ultimate in personalisation and nowhere is this truer than in the world of wedding food. Catering companies are led by unbelievably talented chefs who can just as easily whip up your favourite dish as they can serve something from their own delicious menus. What’s more, dietaries aren’t a problem when creative, knowledgeable minds are at the helm. So, the key takeaway here is: don’t be afraid to ask. After all, the age of the foodie is upon us, so find a caterer that suits your tastes allowing you to work with your dream team to create something your guests will be talking about for years to come. This issue, we’re also taking a peek into wedding flower trends. Stunning as ever, our experts’ work certainly made my jaw drop. Also, on the flora and fauna front, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite venues in the county blessed with glorious gardens for you to enjoy while you celebrate. You’ll be spoilt for backdrops to get your photographer’s creative juices flowing and garden games are a must! So, I hope you love this issue as much as I loved putting it together, and as ever... enjoy and keeeep planning! Nearlywed LOVE STORIES ETCHED IN GOLD Owner of Gold Lark Gallery, Sarah Burns-Collins, has noticed her couples searching for deeper significance in their wedding rings, and designers are finding new ways to add layers of meaning to their creations in response to this. “From a selection of more than 60 designers, our clients can choose the jeweller whose work resonates with them,” Sarah explains. Gold Lark’s artists and experienced team excel at crafting these personal narratives in precious metal and interestingly, have noticed a 30 per cent increase in their bespoke services over off-the-shelf designs. With the recent economic surge in gold prices illuminating the value of repurposing family jewellery, these jewellers can transform the inherited metal into unique, new pieces, blending family history with exquisite design. “When I choose a new collection, I’m looking for that story,” Sarah says. “To see a designer interpret their vision of symbolic meaning, makes it all the more exciting.” Gold Lark Gallery is now able to offer wedding rings cast in the sand of their couple’s chosen location, by Justin Duance, or even rings textured with Yorkshire Tea for the true Yorkshire lad and lass by Alice Clarke. What’s more, couples are opting to personalise their bands with engraving to add an intimate touch. Visit Gold Lark Jewellery Gallery at Salts Mill, Saltaire and check out www.kathlibbertjewellery.co.uk Doncaster Council 8 BACK TO LIFE Built in 1870 as a concert hall and marketplace, the iconic Grade II listed Doncaster Corn Exchange has reached completion following two years of restoration to bring the building back to its former glory. Featuring Victorian classical architecture, it boasts a dome similar to that of the original Crystal Palace. This isn’t the first time the building has undergone a redevelopment having suffered a devastating fire in January 1994 and eventually reopening in 1997. The £5million funding from the government’s levelling up fund is part of plans to help Doncaster Council improve the city. The hope is that the building will help to breathe life back into the city centre, while supporting local talent and entrepreneurial traders, and serving as a venue of choice for fairs, markets and celebrations. Indeed, DIY weddings facilitated by creative individuals or wedding planners are welcomed. Find out more at www.instagram.com/cornexchange_doncaster

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? We round up some of our favourite Yorkshire venues boasting gorgeous gardens BIRDSALL HOUSE 01944 316 003 | www.birdsallestates.co.uk Nestled in the stunning North Yorkshire countryside, Birdsall House is a magnificent stately home built in 1540 and cherished by the same family for nearly 500 years. Seamlessly blending Georgian grandeur with the warmth of a family home, it offers an extraordinary setting for weddings. With only 10 weddings hosted each year, couples enjoy exclusive use and bespoke planning, ensuring a truly personalised and elegant experience. The grounds of Birdsall House are spacious, exclusive and quintessentially English. With a charming temple, tranquil ponds, and countless idyllic spots, you’re spoilt for choice. There are a myriad of stunning spaces to choose from here. The Ballroom (150 ceremony, 110 wedding breakfast, 200 standing reception guests) is a breathtaking, south-facing space bathed in natural light from three grand windows. Adorned with formal family portraits and offering stunning views of the Yorkshire countryside, it epitomises Georgian grandeur and provides an atmosphere of timeless sophistication. The Oval Room (40 ceremony, 40 wedding breakfast, 100 standing reception guests) lies adjacent to The Ballroom and connected by grand, wide doors, is an elegant space. Its distinctive oval shape and exquisite design create a true wow moment for guests. Steeped in family history, with artwork adorning the walls, it serves as an intimate and sophisticated setting for a ceremony. Alternatively, when opened to The Ballroom, it seamlessly expands into a magnificent wedding breakfast space, accommodating up to 150 guests. The Long Hall (20 ceremony, 50 standing reception guests) serves as the grand entrance to Birdsall House, offering guests a captivating first impression. With two majestic fireplaces, this inviting space is perfect for an intimate civil ceremony or a relaxed moment during receptions where guests can unwind and catch up with family and friends. The Dining Room (150 ceremony, 60 wedding breakfast, 24 prewedding dinner guests) is a refined and light-filled space, with large windows offering picturesque views of the garden and the Yorkshire Wolds. Ideal for an intimate pre-wedding family dinner, it also transforms into a stunning setting for a civil ceremony steeped in timeless elegance. The Library (20 ceremony guests) with its rich leather-bound books and oodles of charm, provides an intimate setting for a civil ceremony, perfect for celebrating with only the closest family and friends. The Verandah (200 ceremony and reception guests) to the front of the House creates a striking and memorable setting for a wedding ceremony. On sun-drenched days, couples exchange vows on the grand steps of the house, with family and friends gathered before them. Afterwards, celebrations flow effortlessly into the picturesque gardens, offering a seamless transition from ceremony to reception. The Old Ruins (150 for ceremony and reception), unique to Birdsall and dating back to 11th-century, provide an enchanting setting, offering the perfect blend of a traditional church-like atmosphere in an open-air setting. Should the weather be less than ideal, couples can seamlessly transition to the elegant Dining Room, ensuring that plan B is just as stunning as the original vision. The Little Temple (12 ceremony guests) offers the ultimate setting for an elopement or intimate civil ceremony, with views over the ponds and Birdsall House. Perfect for small weddings, it also provides a stunning backdrop for golden-hour photographs, capturing the romance of the moment just before sunset. Receptions can be hosted in the glorious gardens at Birdsall. Alternatively, if you prefer to be indoors, the Long Hall and the Oval Room can accommodate 150 and are both large areas for mingling and have sofas to relax in. The pièce de résistance when it comes to dancing the night away is The Old Kitchens (200 guests), beneath the stately elegance of the main house. Built in the 1870s at the heart of Birdsall’s downstairs life, the complex of rooms has recently been transformed into a hidden 1920s-style speakeasy bar and nightclub, offering an exhilarating contrast to the grandeur above. THE MANSION 0345 450 4545 | www.themansionleeds.com This fabulous 1820s Regency Grade II listed building with its colonnaded grand entrance and unrivalled views overlooking the Upper Lake of Roundhay Park, nestles perfectly amidst 700 acres of beautiful parkland. You’d hardly know you were just 15 minutes from the buzz of central Leeds, and it’s no wonder The Mansion remains one of the city’s bestloved venues. The Mansion, set within Rounday Park boasts unspoilt views of the countryside, fountains and rolling hills. Indeed, the Park offers more than 700 acres of parkland, one of the largest in the UK. Some of our favourite spots include The Coronation Garden, home to winning Chelsea Flower Show entries. Formerly a kitchen garden there are thousands of rose trees and plants, pretty all year round. The Monet Garden, meanwhile, is based on gardens planted by the impressionist at Giverny in France and not forgetting The Alhambra Garden, which is based on one of the world’s most famous, the 13th century garden at Alhambra, Spain. All weddings at The Mansion make use of the exclusive private entrance and terrace area, with uninterrupted views across the park. Your wedding ceremony will then take place in the beautiful Colonnades Room. You enter via the grand double staircase into this bright and airy space, which will be full of friends and family. The Room boasts floorto-ceiling windows along its full length, providing direct access onto the Mansion’s famous terrace area. On the first floor, accessed via the sweeping staircase beneath the cascading chandelier, is the Mansion Room. The first thing you notice is the view across the park through the original sash windows. Tastefully decorated to complement most colour palettes, the space can be transformed to suit your own style. As the stars come out, The Mansion turns into the perfect party venue, with a bar and dancefloor for guests to dance the night away. The venue can accommodate 220 ceremony guests, 134 for the wedding breakfast and 250 for the evening reception. www.barnabyaldrick.com TEMPLE NEWSAM 0113 336 7460 | https://templenewsam.leeds.gov.uk This magnificent Tudor-Jacobean country house, steeped in history and grandeur, dates back to the 1500s. It has been described as the Hampton Court of the North as it too has royal connections, as the birthplace of the notorious Lord Darnley, the husband of Mary Queen of Scots. The venue is gloriously situated within 1500 acres of Capability Brown landscape including stunning parkland, formal gardens and intimate lakeside locations. The venue feels wonderfully rural being surrounded by countryside, yet it’s conveniently situated just four miles from Leeds city centre and two miles from the M1. In the 16th century, The Great Hall was used for feasting and celebrations, so where could be more fitting to hold your ceremony or wedding breakfast than in this maginificent room? It comfortably accommodates up to 100 guests for both ceremony and sit-down meal. The Great Hall leads straight from the central courtyard to create an immediate wow factor and there’s a secret door that leads to the South Terrace offering the perfect spot for a drinks reception and photographs. Also leading off The Great Hall is The Dining Room, which is the perfect location for an intimate ceremony for up to 40 nearest and dearest or 30 seated to dine. Lined in oaked panelling, this is a majestic room overlooked by a spectacular heraldic overmantel bearing the arms of Mary Queen of Scots. Your wedding day will be the only one at Temple Newsam on your day and, for the time you’re there, you and your guests will have exclusive access to your ceremony space and the stunning oak staircase. www.bencummingphotography.co.uk www.barnabyaldrick.com www.barnabyaldrick.com Scan to view video GLORIOUS GARDENS 23
Best. Day. Ever! Paige and Jordan brought subtle Tangled twists to their styling with a royal champagne palette Images courtesy of Kirsty Mattsson Photography 24
Pagie and Jordan met at the Reading Festival when they were teenagers, after chatting online for two years. The two knew they were soul mates the day they met and didn’t leave each other’s sides for the entire festival. However, they also knew that aged 16 and 17 they were too young to make a long-distance relationship work (Paige lived in Manchester and Jordan in Durham) so, they decided to remain best friends. Sadly, they lost contact for a few years, but reconnected when Paige moved to Paris to work and the two flew bi-weekly to each other in Paris and Durham, which is when love blossomed between them. Now adults, they managed to maintain their long-distance love for around six months before deciding to settle together in Manchester and have never looked back. “The universe finally brought us together just when the time was right,” Paige says. Jordan proposed six years into their relationship. The couple went engagement ring shopping together in the summer of 2023, before Jordan put it away for a rainy day! It turned out to be a very sunny day though when he proposed in their swim-up suite in their favourite hotel in Majorca a month later. The duo love the historical Gothic style and Paige is a huge Disney fan, so they wanted their wedding to look like a real-life fairytale. They knew Allerton Castle was the place for them right away, especially with it being the halfway point between their families in Manchester and Durham. “It’s like it was made for us,” Paige shares. They were also completely sold by the grand staircase, perfect for the bride’s royal princess entrance, allowing her to reenact the Cinderella ballroom scene of her dreams for the first dance. So, with the date set for 29th August 2024, the couple set about planning their own fairytale. Join us as we hear more about the magical big day from the bride herself... SETTING THE SCENE Styled in a royal fairytale theme, the reception layout was kept simple. The bride and groom sat with both sets of parents at the top table with guests seated with those they either knew or shared interests with. It was a beautifully intimate affair shared with 40 nearest and dearest. Since the wedding breakfast room at the Castle was already magnificent the couple decided to keep the centrepieces simple. They included one Chinese lantern, inspired by Disney’s Tangled, Paige’s favourite, surrounded by floating candles and gypsophila. The staircase was also lined with Chinese lanterns and the couple created their own wedding newspaper containing information about the day with a little note from the bride and groom. These were laid on each seat prior to the ceremony for guests to read while they waited. Paige made shortbread biscuits with white icing stamped with their initials and wedding date. “We wanted edible favours as we didn’t want anything to go to waste and we both love a sweet treat,” she explains. They went down a storm and some guests even ate theirs before the starter had arrived! The couple didn’t envision a traditional tiered wedding cake for themselves, so they opted for a vintage Lambeth cake. The red velvet and buttercream were chosen as a subtle nod to Jordan’s favourite football team – Sunderland FC. “Best day ever,” a quote from Tangled was iced on the top, another homage to Paige’s favourite Disney princess. The big-day bake was surrounded by lemon curd flavoured cupcakes, a favourite of the couple. The catering team provided delicious canapés and three-course wedding breakfast, while the couple added a handmade crisp wall, pic ‘n’ mix table and doughnut stands. All essentials given their love of snacks and sweet treats! LOOKING THE PART In recognition of her royal princess theme, Paige set out to find a timeless, elegant ballgown silhouette and fell in love with Senda by Pronovias. The one-shoulder, corset gown with dramatic train was paired with a long veil and three-quarter length gloves embellished with pearls. Pagie’s something blue was hidden within the fabric of the dress – a blue Swarovski Mickey Mouse tucked just under the shoulder. “I felt like real life royalty,” Paige remembers. Jordan wanted a classic navy suit with champagne touches as a nod to their colour palette. This vision was REAL WEDDINGS 25
