WIN FOR SIMPLY DEVINE Tadcaster hat shop Simply Devine is celebrating in style. Liz DevineWright has taken the overall titles of Specialist Wedding Supplier of the Year and Wedding Boutique & Accessories Supplier of the Year in the English Wedding Awards 2022. Liz collected her two trophies at a ceremony held in the Mercure Piccadilly Manchester Hotel. This is the fourth win for Liz at the English Wedding Awards, as she took the overall titles after winning the Yorkshire regional heats, beating competition from suppliers from the north east and north west. She has previously won a number of the awards at the events in recent years, but this year’s final came on the anniversary of the opening of her Simply Devine shop 18 years ago. Liz explains, “It’s double celebrations for us this week after what has been a very difficult two years for all of us servicing the wedding industry. Government regulations forcing us to close, and heavy restrictions on wedding guest numbers, coupled with race meeting closures has severely impacted our business and the hospitality and wedding industries. Fortunately, we’ve come through this and are celebrating our win and our milestone of completing 18 years in business.” For further information about the shop visit: https://simplydevine.co.uk Meadows & Mulberry wedding focus In 2018, florist Karon Breckon decided to focus on weddings. Karon explains, “I’d been inspired when I attended a Wedding Business Retreat with Tallulah Rose Flower School down in Bath. I was completely smitten by the style and ethos of the teaching. I was also introduced to British flowers and a more sustainable way of creating flower designs. I love this style of floristry design. And so Meadows and Mulberry Weddings was born.” During the intervening time, 2018 to 2021, Karon has learned her craft, taken part in workshops, created wedding flowers with British flowers at every opportunity as well as get involved in wedding shoots to further enhance her skill set, adopting a more eco-friendly method of creating flowers, avoiding single use plastic. Karon continues, “As a result of this drive to be a wedding florist, I’ve become busier and busier with weddings. And so this year the decision to close my flower shop in Sheffield made absolute sense and focus solely on my wedding couples. “I now have the flexibility to be able to take on weddings throughout Yorkshire and the surrounding counties. Already I’m creating weddings in Northumberland, as well as north Yorkshire whilst my base is still in Sheffield. This will change at the end of 2022. I will be moving my business to north Yorkshire due to relocation. So 2022 has lots in store!” We wish Karon lots of luck with her venture. Weddings really are a lovely area to work in. MOMENTS Magical Rose and Fin Pickford tied the knot at Whirlowbrook Hall, Sheffield, with floral touches throughout and a sprinkle of magic! Images courtesy of Ufniak Photography Rose and Fin met via mutual friends whilst at York University back in 2013. Having purchased their first home and even adopted Figaro their pet cat, in 2019, Rose had that feeling that a proposal was on the cards. Rose remembers, “Fin had planned a day of my favourite activities for the two of us. Immediately, I was a little suspicious as I’m normally the organiser, but we went to Leeds for a day of crazy golf, bowling, and video games. Before we went out that evening for an Italian that Fin had also booked, I was sitting in our lounge minding my own business and to my surprise Fin proceeded to get down on one knee! Just before he proposed with the ring, he also gave me a present, a watch, which had engraved ‘Marry me?’ on the strap – a special touch as Fin is an avid watch collector. Knowing I’d hate a public proposal, this was perfect as we could celebrate with pizza and prosecco that evening.” Wedding planning commenced and the couple said ‘I do’ on 21st August, 2021 at St James Church, Norton, with a reception at Whirlowbrook Hall. Here, Rose tells us more about their day… 27 REAL WEDDINGS

Amnesia Roses, Miss Piggy Roses, vuvuzela roses, Peach hypericum berries, white double Eustoma, white lupines, and Eucalyptus made up my bouquet. I designed the stationery myself and wanted to ha ve the colours of my bouquet incorporated. Karen from Kurly Bird events did our centrepieces; hoops with floating candles which looked lovely and romantic on the day. As we were originally going to get married in 202 0, a family friend had agreed to drive the same wedding car that my parents use d on their wedding day 37 years prior! Unfortunately, by the time our third postpon ed wedding date came around, the car was no longer in service. Keeping with a si milar car to originally booked, we decided on a beautiful ’50s Rolls Royce. Our chosen venue, Whirlowbrook hall, has amazing grounds and exclusivity for the day which was an immediate draw. For favours we had sustainable and eco-friendly soap as our favours from a local Yorkshire farm, who also happened to be F in’s cousin! 28

My dress had a beautiful train, which I paired with a two-tier cathedral length veil studded with Swarovski crystals to complement the detail on my dress. I knew I wanted a dress to hug my waist, and for it to ooze elegance. I loved everything about it apart from the sleeves when I first tried it on, so Blushes Bridal Studio were so accommodating and said they could easily remove them for me, so we did, and I loved how it made my dress feel more one of a kind to me. We went for a three-tier round cake, with an ombre design of coral and sugar flowers. We went for a more modern choice of flavours: raspberry and white chocolate, lemon, and chocolate orange. I loved having accessories at our wedding that were personalised to us. As a Harry Potter fan, I put our sparklers in Ollivander’s box to look like wands. Another memorable musical moment was that we had Harry’s Wonderful World played by the Harmony String Quartet just as we sat down for the wedding breakfast. I couldn’t miss the opportunity to have a subtle bit of magic at our wedding! Fin and the groomsmen went for slim navy-blue su its to complement our summer colour scheme, and we chose lavender grey dresses for the bridesmaids. 29 REAL WEDDINGS

For every birthday since the age of 10, my dad would write me a poem in my card which would usually describe the events of the past year. On our wedding day, my dad included a poem as part of his speech which I wasn’t expecting. I thought this was very thoughtful and something I’ll always look back on with fond memories. We decided to have dance lessons ahead of our fir st dance. We chose Baby I’m Yours – a nod to Sheffield with the Arctic Monkey s track but we also loved the meaning of the song and the style. It really is true when they say that the moment you see your partner at the end of the aisle, any nerves will go away. The date itself had an extra special meaning too since it was also 67 years to the day that my late grandparents tied the knot. Harmony String Quartet played a range of songs during the reception, from Disney to jazz hits to classical music. ROSE’S TOP TIP! Remember to take a few moments to look who is around you and soak up their company. It’ll be one of the only times where everyone you love is in the same room and this feels really special 30

babe I’ve got you With hints of autumn tones throughout, Tabs and Nick went full country glamour in their exquisite wedding held at Birdsall House Images courtesy of Melissa Beattie Photography 32

No one could have predicted how Tabs and Nick’s first date would have started out seeing as she was supposed to be being set up with someone else! Not hitting it off with her date, Tabs asked to swap seats discreetly with her best friend, Eve, after the meal and ended up sitting next to Nick − the rest is history! Tabs tells us, “Nick’s intelligence was one of the things I was most attracted to along with his sense of humour and how unbelievably kind he is. Nick was most attracted to my sense of humour – you can’t take yourself too seriously!” Nick bought the ring back in 2019 on the day that Tabs’s fiveyear-old nephew Ben was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Tabs explains, “He said to himself he wouldn’t propose until Ben was better and thanks to God, after an op to remove it and a year of chemo and radiotherapy, I got a ring but better still Ben got to ring the bell!” In September 2020, Nick got down on one knee in one of their favourite London haunts and a year later, on 18th September, 2021 they tied the knot at Birdsall House. SETTING THE SCENE “Birdsall House is just perfection!” Tabs gushes. “There are not many stately homes that have been in the same family for centuries and so steeped in history. Positioned in an unspoilt part of north Yorkshire it’s incredibly private but with so much space to play around with. Plus, owners Cara and James have created the perfect family home so it feels incredibly personal and truly relaxed.” It was also important for the couple to be married in a church and with St. Marys on the grounds of the estate it was an obvious choice. As a nod to the pair’s memories of living in London, they chose a classic white taxi to transport them from the church to the grounds. “It seemed a bit ridiculous having a car to drive me five minutes from the house to the church and back again but as we left the church the driver suggested going for a 10-minute drive to allow everyone to get back to the house and for us to catch our breath. My goodness – what an incredible drive that was. Just us as newly married husband and wife – with a glass of fizz in hand! We drove through my parents’ village and everyone at the pub was waving and cheering. Such a lovely moment!” Food was a part of the day the newlyweds wanted to be remembered. “Tom Coe at Coe Catering comes highly recommended not just from the Birdsall team but across north Yorkshire. We really wanted a dish we had in Provence as a starter which was gazpacho with basil sorbet – simple flavours but delicious! Often you go to a wedding and the food isn’t memorable but so many people have spoken about the food after saying how amazing it was. The next day I noticed that two friends even text me during the meal with a picture of their fillet steak saying how incredible it was! “We all know that after an hour or two of dancing, people get hungry so we had Knead and Feed pizza guys come and serve unlimited pizza until the early hours. It was so good I had a cold slice the next morning! “We weren’t going to do favours but then I went on gardening leave between jobs and found I had some time on my hands. Nick and I love going out for food and drinks so we created a mini Good Pub Guide – from the Three Chimneys in Skye to The Wiverton Bell in North Norfolk – we covered the breadth of the UK. Our tables were named after the pubs featured in our wedding favours and were held up by a wine cork to carry on the theme.” The table was finished off with a fantastic bowl of flowers spilling out over the table from florist, Lucy and her amazing team, along with some tall tapered candles. LOOKING THE PART Being a lady that knows exactly what she wants, Tabs tried on one dress and one dress only. She explains, “I’ve always known what I like and what I don’t. I’m proud to say that I get that from my mum. I suppose being a bride in my mid ’30s I know myself and my body. I’m a size 16-18 and one thing I’d love to see change is the sample sizes − why should I have to squeeze myself into a size 10? Surely, they should have two sample sizes, a 10 and maybe a 16? I also bought an embellished dress from Never Fully Dressed which I changed in to for the partying teamed with a pair of Veja trainers and my classic red Nars lippy. Nothing was going to stop me from dancing all night!” When it came to the men it was a resounding answer: “Tails all day long! Men look so utterly handsome in tails and it’s so rare they get to wear them!” Nick was kitted out at Ede and Ravenscroft for his outfit, which matched the bridesmaids and had some beautiful diamond Asprey cufflinks gifted to him by his Mum for his 18th birthday. The three best men also wore tails. TIME TO CELEBRATE During the wedding reception the newlyweds had chosen Kate Lister and her partner Alex Hill (both of Foo Birds) to perform whilst the guests sipped champagne in the sunshine. “Her voice is like caramel and they sang some fantastic soul, jazz and pop songs.” Tabs continues, “Then in the evening we had Flynn and Tonics who totally got the party started, they even let me perform an impromptu version of Say You’ll Be There by the Spice Girls. Once they had finished their set they then DJ’d for us. Our first dance was I’ve got you Babe by Etta James.” MEMORABLE MOMENTS “I felt incredibly relaxed and ready to get down the aisle!” Tabs remembers.“ I suppose having dated for a decade and being older, we knew what we were doing. I also naturally love being centre of attention so I suppose this was a perfect day for me! Nick was incredibly cool, calm and collected. “My Dad is a Bishop and we asked him to take the service. It made it unbelievably personal from the vows to the address, he just smashed it. Dad also took me down the aisle, which meant changing from his Father of the Bride frock coat to his cassock during the first hymn. Luckily my brother-in-law, sister and friend were doing the music so we just had to have another chorus at the end to give him time to get back from the vestry! It was a right family affair and everyone said how special it felt.” TABS’S TOP TIPS: “Keep your guests in mind – don’t let the initial drinks reception go on too long leaving people standing around and I truly believe you should go for quality over quantity even if that means inviting less people!” REAL WEDDINGS 35
