A perfect retreat Editor Olivia Gibson reviews a hidden gem in the heart of the Peak District If you’re like me, the perfect retreat isn’t flashy but it’s cosy, full of charm and rich in character. That’s exactly what we found at the Peak Edge Hotel and the Red Lion Restaurant, a family-run gem in the heart of the stunning Peak District. SETTING THE SCENE After winding our way through the scenic countryside, we arrived at the charming property that blends traditional English character with modern comforts and a calming colour palette. We were greeted by the friendly team, who checked us in with genuine smiles and made us feel instantly at ease. After ensuring we had everything needed for a memorable stay, we strolled up to our room, excited to settle in. REST YOUR HEAD The property has 27 bedrooms, creating an intimate and exclusive feel throughout, combining traditional styling with modern features designed to promote rest, relaxation, and comfort. We enjoyed a night in the Superior Double, featuring a plush king-sized bed as well as a 46” LED TV for cosy nights in. Don’t get me started on the bathroom, complete with a rainfall walkin shower, spacious bath and underfloor heating - yes please! FOOD FOR THOUGHT The chefs at The Red Lion are true experts, delivering great food in an intimate setting with rustic décor and soft lighting – the perfect recipe for an unforgettable evening. The team was warm, knowledgeable, and made the meal extra special. The menu blends classic and modern dishes that’s enough to get your mouth watering. The vibrant tomato and pepper soup was the perfect cosy start – fresh, velvety, and comforting, served with whipped butter and warm, crusty bread. For the main, I had the Free Range Packington Chicken Supreme that was tender, juicy, and packed with flavour. It came with creamy fondant potato, wild mushrooms, courgette, tarragon fricassee, and a rich jus. Every bite was a delight. Dessert was velvety vanilla and rich chocolate ice cream. The next morning, we fuelled up with traditional porridge drizzled with Walton Lodge honey and a bowl of fresh fruit – the perfect start to our day. EXCHANGING VOWS Weddings at The Peak Edge Hotel are spectacular, set against the breathtaking Peak District. The Oak Room seats up to 200 guests in a light-filled space with floor-toceiling windows, skylights, chandeliers, and a bespoke bar. For more intimate celebrations, the Walton Suite hosts up to 100 guests with its own bar, restrooms, and terrace. The outdoor pagoda offers a stunning ceremony setting with panoramic views – perfect for drinks receptions too. To complete the wedding experience, the chefs collaborate with each couple to create a personalised menu. THE FINAL VERDICT Overall, we had an unforgettable stay from start to finish! The Peak Edge Hotel is truly a special setting for celebrating special events, and we can’t wait to return in the future!
