The evolution of weddings: As we hit our 100th issue, we look back over the last 16 years to reflect how weddings have adapted through the years It’s no secret that weddings have massively evolved throughout the years, due to economic changes, technological advancements, and evolving cultural values. From 2009 to 2025, there has been a dramatic shift on how couples are approaching their special day. While love still remains at its core, weddings have transformed into something unimaginable just a couple of decades ago. 2009–2015: THE ERA OF TRADITION, PINTEREST, AND THE RISE OF PERSONALISATION When we take a look at the late 2000s and early 2010s, we see that weddings were still tied to long-standing traditions, with white dresses, banquet halls, church ceremonies, and large guest lists being the norm. However, through the cracks, we can start to see the rise of personalisation slowly coming through. While everything was still very traditional, lovebirds were searching for ways to make their wedding more unique through themed décor, signature cocktails, or customised vows. One of the most significant influences on weddings during this period was the rise of Pinterest and Instagram. Launched in 2010, Instagram quickly became a hub for wedding inspiration, while Pinterest transformed wedding planning as couples could now browse endless boards of colour palettes, floral arrangements, and dress ideas to visualise the big day, one saved photo at a time, making way for ‘Pinterest-perfect’ weddings. The aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis meant that many couples were rethinking extravagant spending. This gave rise to the DIY (do-it-yourself) wedding movement. Brides and grooms turned to handmade decorations, Etsy purchases 2009 to 2025 unsplash.com@3tnik unsplash.com@olivie_strauss 12

and repurposed materials to create stylish yet budget-friendly weddings. This caused a rise in rustic barn weddings, where Mason jar centrepieces and wooden signage became hallmarks of this period. 2016–2020: THE DIGITAL AGE AND THE SHIFT TOWARD INCLUSIVITY As we fast forward to 2016, social media had become integral to wedding planning! We’re talking custom hashtags to encourage guests to share photos and videos, suppliers showcasing their best work, and endless inspiration to share worldwide. Instagram-worthy aesthetics influenced themes, colour palettes, venue choices, floral arrangements, and even dress styles. Tech integration took off in this period. Drones captured breathtaking aerial shots, wedding planning apps streamlined organisation, and VR (virtual reality) previews of venues became available. By 2020, livestreamed weddings became common, allowing distant friends and family to join in virtually. On the flip side, many couples encouraged guests to put their phones away with unplugged ceremonies to be present. More lovebirds also opted for non-religious ceremonies or handfasting rituals, reflecting a decline in religious celebrations. Throughout this period, we saw bold colour palettes with deep jewel tones and monochrome themes becoming trendy, as well as mismatched bridesmaid dresses. More brides were opting for alternative wedding attire such as jumpsuits, coloured gowns and capes. With climate change awareness rising, eco-friendly weddings became a trend. Couples opted for digital invitations, locally sourced food, second-hand dresses, and zero-waste décor. Sustainable practices weren’t just for budget-conscious couples but also for those looking to reduce their environmental impact. Instead of ballrooms, some chose industrial spaces and warehouses, while others opted for bohemian-style celebrations. 2020 - THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC AND THE REINVENTION OF WEDDINGS As we look back at the year 2020, this was a huge turning point for the wedding industry due to the Covid-19 pandemic that forced many couples to rethink how they celebrated their big day. There was a huge shift, shaping the weddings we see today. Before this time, weddings often had 150-plus guests, but pandemic restrictions forced couples to downsize, giving way to micro-weddings and elopements. With travel restrictions and social distancing rules, many planned creative ways to still include loved ones, such as Zoom weddings, live-streamed ceremonies, and recorded vows. Many couples turned to exchanging vows outdoors due to indoor venues being shut down, limited capacities and social distancing rules. As many people postponed their 2020 weddings by a year or two, venues became massively overbooked, causing many to consider more weekday or off-season weddings in winter instead of the popular spring or summer months. 2021–2025: INTIMATE, TECH-DRIVEN, AND EXPERIENCE-FOCUSED WEDDINGS The impact of the pandemic led to a permanent shift with smaller, more intimate weddings becaming the new norm, with couples planning small but mighty celebrations. It’s all about creating immersive, guest-focused experiences with interactive food stations, live art performances, curated playlists, and weekend-long celebrations at boutique hotels or unique venues. The focus has fully shifted from following traditions to creating memorable experiences tailored to the couple’s personality. Eco-consciousness is no longer a trend but a standard practice, with many opting for lab-grown diamonds, plant-based catering, and biodegradable décor. Renting wedding dresses, choosing seasonal flowers, and eliminating single-use plastics are expected choices rather than special considerations. Perhaps the most significant shift is that weddings are no longer about meeting societal expectations. Couples are redefining what a wedding looks like, whether that means a courthouse elopement, a multi-day adventure wedding, or skipping the wedding altogether in favour of a private vow exchange. The pressure to have a grand event has lessened, giving couples the freedom to celebrate in a way that feels authentic to them. THE FUTURE OF WEDDINGS Over the years, we have seen such a change in the world of weddings from the grandeur of early 2000s weddings to intimate celebrations and the personalised affairs of the 2020s. What remains unchanged is how all these celebrations have still focused on love and commitment. However, the way couples choose to express that love has become more flexible, inclusive, and creative than ever before. As we move beyond 2025, the future of weddings will likely continue to evolve with social changes, but one thing is for sure, weddings of tomorrow will be as unique as the couples who celebrate them. unsplash.com@olivie_strauss SPECIAL CELEBRATION 13

Let your ceremony unfold in a place where every beam and stone tells a story of love, history, and tradition The gatehouse of Cheylesmore Manor House, a remnant of a medieval royal palace, stands in the heart of Coventry city centre on New Union Street. The magnificent timber building is a key piece of Coventry’s rich and important heritage. Previously, the only unfortified royal palace outside of London, it’s now used as a stunning venue for ceremonies. SETTING THE SCENE The manor is believed to have been built for the Earl of Arundel in 1237. By 1320, it had passed to Queen Isabella, wife of Edward II, along with the lavish Cheylesmore Park that surrounded it. Her grandson, Edward the Black Prince, inherited it after her. The building known today is, in fact, only the gatehouse and parts of two cross wings of the original manor house. EXCHANGING VOWS The property has three beautiful ceremony rooms: the Queen Isabella Room (hosting 20 people) , the Black Prince Room (50), and the Library Room (10). The Black Prince Room retains a wealth of original features, including a magnificent vaulted beamed ceiling with an impressive stone fireplace, and is furnished to a very high standard with medieval chandeliers. The room has been tastefully decorated to add an extra special touch to ceremonies. Once the vows are over, couples will exit from this room via a winding staircase, down to a huge oak door, into a large stone-flagged courtyard where a section of the city wall still remains. The Queen Isabella Room, with its beautiful beams on both walls and ceiling, is tastefully furnished to a high standard. Once the ceremony is over, guests will exit from the opposite side of the room, passing through a second huge oak door onto a large stone-flagged courtyard. TO REMEMBER A weekend Elegant minimalism, heartfelt moments and exquisite food combined to create this wedding Images courtesy of Katie Ingram Photography Kirsty and Rikki first met in a bar in Coventry. What began as a spark of attraction quickly grew into a deeper connection. Years later, Rikki surprised Kirsty with a proposal in the breathtaking 13th-century Church of Saint Pietro a Toccolo, hidden in a cave once used by Christian ascetics. The historic setting, followed by the modern luxury of the Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel, blended sacred tradition with contemporary elegance. The couple’s wedding, set for March 2025, was designed as a weekend of great food, flowing drinks, and effortless connections. The couple chose Hampton Manor, the renowned “foodie estate,” with two awardwinning restaurants. The venue’s subtle décor enhanced the atmosphere without overwhelming it. Neutral tones in flowers and the overall theme created an elegant setting. Highlights included a circular plinth and runway aisle, a personalised welcome mirror, a custom Ciara Aloisio bloom wishing well, and floral clouds on plinths. Long tables set a grand yet intimate tone for the wedding breakfast, and the centrepieces featured cloud-like white hydrangeas and roses in stoneware pedestal vases, while ivory Ester and Erik candles in gold holders added warm, ambient light. Place and table names continued the clean, minimal aesthetic with soft gold accents, and personalised menus added an elegant touch. Favours for guests included handmade Barnaby Bars, complementing the 818 Tequila table. On the big day, guests enjoyed canapés at the drinks reception, followed by a three-course meal of confit salmon with horseradish and wild rice, slow-braised ox cheek with artichoke, bone marrow, boulangère potatoes, and hispi cabbage, finished with a rich milk chocolate delice with hazelnut and vanilla ice cream. Evening food added a playful touch with classic chicken and chips. We can’t forget about the classic off-white heartshaped cake with delicate piped details, simple yet elegant. Kirsty wore the Milla Nova Rita two-piece Mikado mermaid gown, with a heart-shaped draped bow neckline, off-theshoulder sleeves, a boned corset and a fitted maxi skirt with a short train, completed with a custom blusher veil adorned with tiny pearls. “I was absolutely in awe when I saw myself! I felt truly special, thanks to my glam team,” Kirsty says. Rikki wore a stunning Gieves & Hawkes ivory Colomb ecru wool shawl tuxedo, embodying timeless charm and elegance. The wedding party included their four young children, with the boys in black tuxedos and the girls in ivory satin puff cropped gowns. Music was central to the day, curated by TwentyOne Events. The ceremony opened with the TwentyOne Choir performing their favourite songs as Kirsty walked down the aisle. A roaming saxophonist added a relaxed vibe during the drinks reception, while musicians on mirrored plinths serenaded guests at the wedding breakfast. A live rendition of the couple’s chosen song marked their introduction as bride and groom, followed by sing-alongs that lifted the energy. The evening party featured the Lux Flagship Show Band on a giant mirror ball stage, keeping the dancefloor alive. “The live music brought such an electric atmosphere and really set the tone for each part of the day,” Kirsty says. The most special moments included their 10-year-old daughter’s welcome speech and their four children cutting the cake together. Another meaningful detail was Rikki’s sister conducting the ceremony as the celebrant, adding a deeply personal touch by sharing their love story with guests. “It was such a beautiful and intimate way to begin the day and something we will always cherish,” Kirsty adds. The next day, the pair welcomed 55 overnight guests at Grace & Savour, one of the key reasons for choosing the venue. The weekend ended with a relaxed Sunday lunch of chicken liver parfait with fennel chutney, Hereford beef sirloin with carrot purée, Yorkshire pudding and smoked bone marrow gravy, finished with chocolate tart and crème fraîche ice cream. A botanical romance Silke and Matt’s wedding blended timeless style with heartfelt moments Images courtesy of Nicole Amy Visuals Chocolate, long considered a symbol of love, is where Matt and Silke’s story began. Despite growing up in the same town and attending the same school, it wasn’t until they worked for Hotel Chocolat that their paths truly crossed. Silke comments,“The Mayans said chocolate was linked to love and marriage and, in our case, it has definitely been the case. We just clicked and connected; we felt happy in each other’s company, and spending time together outside of work became a permanent thing. We’ve been inseparable ever since.” Matt proposed in New York 10 years later, a city that held special meaning for him. “I still didn’t expect it!” Silke continues, “Matt’s a planner and a bit of a perfectionist, so he organised everything from designing a bespoke ring to arranging lunch, drinks and a walk past the perfect spot – a quiet, cobbled street in Manhattan lined with wisteria. Matt got down to pop the question, which took me completely by surprise, but of course, after the initial shock, I said ‘Yes’!” SETTING THE SCENE Matt and Silke’s goal was for the day to feel unmistakably like them, surrounded by as many of their loved ones as possible. With guests flying in from Malaysia, Australia, Denmark and the America, the celebration had a truly international feel. Another key focus? Ensuring that the food, drinks and entertainment reflected their personalities and shared story. When venue hunting, the couple had their hearts set on a hall or mansion-style setting, and Hawkstone Hall delivered beyond expectations. “Coming down the long driveway, the venue reveals itself nestled in the picturesque Shropshire countryside, and it was breathtaking,” Silke recalls. “As soon as we walked into the chapel, I knew that was where Matt and I would be getting married. Every room was a ‘wow’ moment.” Their wedding stylist, Lesley at White Fern Weddings, helped bring Silke’s vision to life: a timeless, botanical, and elegant aesthetic with ivory, gold and green at its core. “Lesley is worth her weight in gold,” says Silke. “She even helped me include a tribute to my late dad by reserving him a seat at the ceremony. Seeing his buttonhole there, created by Emma from Luna Bloom, meant everything to me.” Emma also designed all the floral elements, from the low-footed centrepieces to a statement broken arch that was later repurposed behind the sweetheart table. The cake, a four-tier showpiece by Boutique Bakery, featured sugar flowers and pink prosecco, chocolate, elderflower lemon, and cookies and cream flavours. A naturally dyed silk ribbon and edible gold leaf added the perfect finishing touches. Every detail was carefully considered throughout the day. Hotel Chocolat favours nodded to the couple’s beginnings, while the table plan and stationery styled by Lesley combined elegance with personal touches. Each guest received a personalised menu card sealed with a bronze wax leaf emblem, and a QR code at every table, encouraging guests to upload their photos from the day. Hawkstone Hall also provided the catering, accommodating a wide range of dietary needs. “They were fantastic,” Silke says. “We even paid extra to offer two main course options as we couldn’t choose just one! LOOKING THE PART The bride wore the Lily dress by Made with Love, from Coco + Kate in Hatton Shopping Village. “It was perfect! I wanted something timeless and elegant without feeling over the top. I loved the modern detail and luxurious fabric. I felt so like myself, that’s how I knew it was the one!” Silke kept her look classic with a cathedral-length veil edged in botanical lace. Jewellery was kepy minimal with a diamond bracelet from her mum, a blue topaz ring from her late aunt, and leaf-inspired gold and pearl earrings. Her soft blush Ginko Girl Christian Louboutin sandals were a splurge chosen for both beauty and rewearability. Hair and makeup were done by Colette at Hair Creations by Colette and Lauren at By Lauren McCabe. “I felt beautiful, for possibly the first time, and fully accepting that it was me! I was excited to be seen, and that’s so unlike me.” The groom wore a brown three-piece Caridi suit from House of Cavani, with a champagne-toned ginkgo leaf tie and pocket square to match the bride’s details. Groomsmen wore matching suits, but with ties and pocket squares to match the bridesmaids’ dresses. Ivory shirts from Charles Tyrwhitt and brown brogues completed the look. Bridesmaids wore fern green Lavish Alice dresses with a bamboo jacquard print. “I didn’t want sage or olive, and this colour was stunning, full of life, and the jacquard was a subtle nod to my oriental ancestry.” TIME TO CELEBRATE The couple chose the wonderful Nero String Quartet to play during the welcome drinks, the ceremony, and throughout the cocktail and canapé hour. Each song was handpicked by them and their loved ones. The bride shares, “The team was praised by all our guests, their modern classical style perfectly complemented the ambience of Hawkstone Hall. Bridgertonesque, you might say!” During the garden cocktail hour, guests enjoyed a 9-hole, wedding-themed mini-golf course set up by To Have and To Holed. Silke adds, “Guests loved the mini-golf despite the weather, those who played had so much fun.” For the evening reception, the pair booked Keynote Entertainment, known for their live duelling piano bar in Birmingham. Their request-based setlist meant every song played was chosen by the couple and their guests. She continues, “Keynote were incredible and had everyone on the dancefloor. Guests loved being part of the music choices!” A photo booth by Deluxe Booths added to the fun, complete with props and a guestbook filled with photo memories compiled on the night, with many wonderful memories created thanks to the team! MEMORABLE MOMENTS Matt felt happy and excited throughout the day. He says, “The amount of time we’ve been together, plus all the prep, made me feel totally at ease. I just knew the day would be amazing. The only part I was nervous about was my speech! Looking back, what stands out most is knowing our wedding will probably be the only time all the most important people in our lives are together in one place. That’s really special.” Silke felt calm and content. Marrying Matt was something she’d always been certain about, and their careful planning made the day flow seamlessly. She says, “I know it sounds cliché, but I honestly felt so loved. To be surrounded by the people we care most about, all together and fully present – how often does that happen?” One of the bride’s most treasured memories was the heartfelt speeches from her mum and sister, commenting, “They’re not confident public speakers, so the fact they overcame that for me meant the world. Every speech felt like a true reflection of our relationship, it made me proud of us and the life we’ve built.” For Matt, three moments stood out: spending a relaxed morning with his groomsmen in the venue’s ‘mancave’ over breakfast, music and games, a hilarious and unforgettable speech by one of his groomsmen and ending the night with post-reception drinks in the library. “It gave us the chance to really catch up with everyone. If you get the opportunity, I’d absolutely recommend it,” he comments. 32
