North London pub revival Urban Pubs and Bars, London’s largest independent pub and dining group, has today announced the reopening of the Highbury Barn Tavern. The beloved North London local will return, following a full refurbishment and a £500k investment. The recent transformation brings new energy to the venue while paying tribute to its storied past, which dates back to 1840, as an ale and cake house. The full redecoration includes upgraded bar and dining areas, a newly built back bar (while retaining the characterful original bar front), and refreshed outdoor seating. With capacity for 200 guests across a 100-person bar, 60-seat dining room, and a 40-person snug, the space balances traditional pub charm with a relaxed ambience. A major focus of the relaunch is the food. Highbury Barn Tavern welcomes Head Chef Sara O’Neil to lead the kitchen. Dishes will include modern pub classics alongside desserts inspired by the venue’s Victorian dairy-house roots, such as vanilla set custard with poached apricots, and cheeses from La Fromagerie. Book now: urbanpubsandbars.com VICTORIAN VENUE RELAUNCH Set across a beautifully restored three-storey Victorian townhouse on Islington’s vibrant Upper Street, The Hare & Hounds is a characterful and flexible new venue perfect for weddings, private dining, and unforgettable parties. How Solas Strings is redefining wedding music through personalisation, creativity, and talent The wedding industry keeps evolving, shifting from traditional multi-day celebrations to more intimate, creative, and personal experiences. Music is no exception. We caught up with Alleya Weibel, Director at Solas Strings, to talk about how string music is changing the wedding game. “String musicians have always been a wedding staple,” Alleya shares. “For years, we have seen ceremonies begin with Can’t Help Falling in Love (Elvis), Canon in D (Pachelbel), or Wildest Dreams (Taylor Swift). Now, we’re seeing new songs take trend, like Ordinary (Alex Warren) and Adore U (Fred Again).” One surprising hit this year? The Formula 1 theme song, performed by a string trio. “These fun songs add personality and flair to processional exits or drinks receptions,” Alleya says. Cinematic favourites like Einaudi, Hans Zimmer, and John Williams are also in high demand. Genres like afrobeats and R&B are making their way into daytime moments too, especially when performed on violin, sax, or vocals. But the biggest shift? The rise of Bridgerton-style covers. This essentially refers to string quartet covers of songs from any time and genre. ABOUT SOLAS STRINGS Founded in 2020, London-based Solas Strings is a modern, award-winning ensemble of conservatoire-trained musicians. Performing globally across genres, from classical to Bollywood, they offer bespoke musical experiences for ceremonies, drinks receptions, and full-day celebrations. The sound of modern love BOOK NOW! Editor Olivia Gibson experiences luxury and leisure at the Courthouse Hotel Shoreditch Tucked away in the vibrant heart of East London lies the Courthouse Hotel Shoreditch, a sophisticated fusion of contemporary luxury and historic charm. Housed in a Grade II listed Baroque-style building that once served as a magistrates’ court, the Hotel blends classic architecture with bold design and upscale comfort. From skyline views and rooftop cocktails to rejuvenating spa experiences and indulgent breakfasts, every moment of our stay was crafted for comfort, pleasure and a welcome escape. SETTING THE SCENE From the moment the lobby doors glided open, the tone was polished, professional, and undeniably chic. The team greeted us with a warm welcome and handled checkin with effortless efficiency. We were fortunate enough to stay in the Shoreditch Sky Terrace Suite, a sprawling 60 m² retreat that blends contemporary design and cosy elegance with direct entry to Upper 5th Shoreditch, the Hotel’s exclusive rooftop bar. The spacious bedroom featured a plush bed that felt like sleeping on a cloud, wrapped in silky-soft linens and topped with plump pillows. The expansive bathroom was a highlight in itself with double sinks, a luxurious walk-in rainfall shower, and a bathtub. The lounge area was designed for both relaxation and entertainment. A wraparound sofa, dining table, large flat-screen TV, and a well-stocked minibar offered everything needed. WELLNESS AND INDULGENCE We had full access to the hotel’s tranquil spa facilities and, naturally, we made the most of it. Our visit began with a serene 30-minute Swedish couple’s massage in a softly lit treatment room, where the calming music and gentle aromatherapy set the stage for deep relaxation. The masseuses were attentive and skilled, leaving us feeling calm and re-energised. Following our treatment, we ventured to the 10-metre heated pool with its cascading jet fountain and jacuzzi-style bubbles before enjoying the sauna and steam room. It was a soul-soothing experience, and after a day of pampering, we felt wonderfully refreshed. A MORNING TO REMEMBER The next morning began with breakfast at Judge & Jury, the Hotel’s stylish restaurant nestled within the building’s original courtroom. Retaining its historic features, it provides a unique and atmospheric setting for a leisurely breakfast. The buffet catered to all tastes, with options ranging from pastries, cereals and fruit to full hot breakfast offerings. I enjoyed a plate of scrambled eggs, sautéed mushrooms, hashbrowns, grilled tomato, and toast, followed by a buttery croissant and sweet cinnamon swirl to finish. The team was attentive and friendly, offering help with anything from toasting bread to delivering rich coffees and indulgent hot chocolates with a smile. We left the restaurant energised and content, ready to explore London. CELEBRATE IN STYLE Whether you’re planning a wedding, anniversary, or special event, Courthouse Hotel Shoreditch offers an unforgettable setting. Fully licensed for civil ceremonies and boasting a selection of individually styled event spaces, the property is ideal for everything from intimate gatherings to larger celebrations. The in-house chefs bring experience from some of London’s most prestigious kitchens, crafting bespoke menus tailored to your vision. When the party winds down, the hotel offers a unique selection of honeymoon and luxury suites for the perfect postcelebration wind-down. THE FINAL VERDICT Overall, our stay at Courthouse Hotel Shoreditch was great! From the stunning suite and exceptional spa to the delicious breakfast and welcoming service, every detail was handled with care. ALL AROUND Love Dean and Hannah created an elegant city wedding full of classic touches with the help from the experts Images courtesy of Rose Rae Photography Dean and Hannah planned their wedding with one clear intention: to keep it intimate, relaxed, and meaningful. Their guest list was thoughtfully curated, with twenty-six people attending the ceremony, with sixty more joining for the evening celebration. It was a day built around connection, simplicity, and personal touches. SETTING THE SCENE The ceremony took place at Old Marylebone Town Hall, a venue the couple chose the moment they walked through its doors. “The building is stunning, rich in history, and the staff were lovely and friendly,” Hannah shares. “No other venue could compare.” The elegant architecture and welcoming team created the perfect setting. For the styling, Hannah and Dean leaned into a minimalist black-and-white theme with soft, modern accents. Two long tables were set for the wedding breakfast, dressed with white runners, bud vases filled with gypsophila, carnations, and chrysanthemums, and white taper candles tied with black bows. With a small group, they skipped a formal table plan and instead created hand-crafted name cards and personalised menus tied with ribbon. The bride’s creativity was seen throughout the day. She designed all the stationery, including their A1 welcome sign, and even arranged a custom heart-shaped balloon printed with their names and wedding date. The cake mirrored their theme, heartshaped, classic white, with a “Just Married” topper. Transport to the venue had a special, sentimental twist. “My Dad arranged for a beautiful, traditional white Fairway taxi that was decorated with a white bow and flowers, to collect us from the Holmes Hotel,” Hannah recalls. It was a heartfelt gesture that set the tone for a day full of warmth and thoughtfulness. The bride’s bridal outfit was a bold and modern choice. She wore the Charlotte suit by Nadine Merabi, a pearl-detailed ensemble that perfectly captured her city-chic vision. “I always knew I wanted to wear a suit rather than a dress,” Hannah says. “The pearl detail made it feel more special and bridal.” A Jennifer Behr headband added glamour in place of a traditional veil, and she completed the look with a pearlescent Mango handbag and pearl-accented heels from Charles & Keith. The bride also carried meaningful touches from her family. Her something old was her nan’s handkerchief, her something borrowed was her mother’s pearl necklace, and her something blue came from a ribbon tied around her bouquet. A Parachute Regiment patch from her grandfather added an emotional layer to the look. Seeing everything come together that morning gave Hannah a huge confidence boost. Dean’s outfit complemented Hannah’s effortlessly. He wore a stone-coloured double-breasted suit from Reiss, a crisp Ralph Lauren shirt, and white trainers from Jones Bootmaker. “He looked fantastic, and the outfit perfectly matched his personal style,” says Hannah. “It complemented my city-chic vision beautifully.” For entertainment, the couple created a curated Spotify playlist filled with their favourite tracks, from funk and soul to sentimental family favourites. “We added some of our parents’ favourite songs, which made the evening extra special and helped create wonderful memories,” Hannah noted. Guests danced and celebrated in a laid-back atmosphere that reflected the couple’s personalities. Though both felt nervous before the ceremony, the staff at Old Marylebone Town Hall quickly put them at ease. For the couple, this moment stood out as the most meaningful part of the day. Speeches from Hannah’s dad and Dean’s best men brought both laughter and tears, adding emotional depth to the celebration. The couple’s wedding was everything they hoped it would be – stylish yet simple, personal yet unfussy, and full of love. It was a day that truly reflected who they are: modern, thoughtful, and deeply connected to the people around them. REAL WEDDINGS 23

A sun-kissed celebration Cloe and Chris’ relaxed wedding at Brockwell Hall brought a slice of Italy to their doorstep Images courtesy of Inez Gordon Chris proposed while on holiday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to celebrate Cloe’s 30th birthday. “The whole thing was really low-key and very us,” Cloe shares. “I was opening birthday cards in bed and saved Chris for last. Inside, he’d written the sweetest message, ending with, ‘...and so I felt it was time I really locked this down.’ I looked at him, totally confused, and then he pulled out the most beautiful ring and asked me to marry him!” They spent the morning in their own bubble, sipping Champagne by the pool before sharing the news with loved ones. The couple’s wedding goal was a relaxed, joyful day celebrating ten years together in Brixton and Herne Hill. “It was really important that the day reflected our world,” says Cloe. “So we chose local suppliers we genuinely love and places we visit regularly.” They opted for a summer cocktail vibe with Italian influences, featuring fizz, classic aperitifs, a sharing-style feast, and a pizza van that stayed open into the night. Luckily, the weather made it feel like a slice of Italy in South London. Having lived near Brockwell Park for more than a decade, it had always been central to the couple’s lives. When Brockwell Hall reopened for weddings, they were the first official booking. “The team was super helpful throughout the planning process,” Cloe says. As a designer, the bride created hand-painted invites, the wedding website, and candlestick holders with help from friends. “I wanted it to reflect the laid-back, joyful spirit of the day,” she says, and she used soft watercolours, hand-lettered calligraphy, and illustrations inspired by the venue. Flowers were seasonal, with pastel peonies, white stocks, and wildflower-style arrangements by Flower Lady Elaine. Chris’ mum made the elderflower sponge cake with lemon curd and Swiss meringue buttercream, topped with dried wildflowers. Food focused on fresh, seasonal sharing dishes. “We worked with the lovely team at West 16th to create a Mediterraneaninspired menu that felt really personal,” Cloe explains. Canapés included blue cheese blinis and smoked mackerel on rye, while the family-style feast featured smoked trout tart, beluga lentils with roast squash, and new potato salad with wild garlic. Drinks came from local favourites like Chin Chin wines, a Sicilian red from Wild & Lees, and Bullfinch beers. Decorations were minimal, letting Brockwell Hall shine, with pops of orange and green on the tables. The lovebirds’ favourite moment? A surreal midnight ride home through the park on a golf buggy. Cloe wore a silk gown by Alexandra Grecco, the first one she tried at Lovely Bride London. “The cut was elegant and understated, with a simplicity that matched the relaxed day,” she says. The bride even had scrunchies made from the surplus silk for her mum and maidsof-honour. Accessories were minimal: pearl drop earrings from Lily & Roo, a delicate diamond necklace from Chris, a classic tulle veil from a friend, and silver metallic Jimmy Choo mules for dancing. Her makeup was soft and natural by Becky Flynn, and her hair styled in effortless waves by Hanna at G & H Hair London. “It felt completely surreal! Suddenly, everything became real, and I couldn’t wait to walk down the aisle to see Chris.” The groom wore a bespoke sandcoloured suit by Zebel, in a linen, cotton, and silk blend, with a vintage floral Yves Saint Laurent tie for a pop of colour. The groomsmen wore relaxed linen suits with matching buttonholes, while the maids-of-honour wore buttery yellow dresses. A band kicked off the evening, and the dancefloor stayed packed with indie classics and noughties throwbacks. Though unplanned, their first dance happened spontaneously to Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, starting slow before erupting into a full-on dance party. Later, Chris’ groomsman Cosmo surprised them with a DJ set, followed by a garage set from their friend Sam, which were both hits with guests! “The day was full of love and gratitude,” Cloe reflects. “We felt so lucky to be surrounded by our incredible friends and family. Seeing everyone meet and mingle was really special. Most of the day was spent outdoors, eating and drinking in the sunshine.” The couple was grateful for the amazing suppliers who helped bring it all together. A standout moment? Chris’ best man, Adam, shared a heartfelt speech that’s still remembered by guests. The entire wedding party helped set up the venue the day before, making it a true team effort. REAL WEDDINGS 29

Bright Brockwell Hall provided a dream-worthy setting for this fun and colourful shoot Images courtesy of Aurélie Four Photography AND BOLD This glorious shoot is bursting with inspiration, thanks to a talented team! Mercedes Gale Parr, founder of 4YaParty Weddings & Events, was the driving force behind the day. As a recommended supplier at Brockwell Hall, and having eagerly awaited its reopening to work her magic, Mercedes took the shoot in her stride. She says, “As usual, there was a strong, sustainable ethos, as there is in all my shoots. This started with having all local South London wedding suppliers, many of whom travelled by public transport, and included reusable glassware, animal-friendly hair and makeup products, and absolutely no single-use plastic in sight! I wanted to show that sustainable weddings can still be trendy and modern without creating waste. Brockwell Hall, with its updated sustainable practices, was the perfect backdrop for our rustic and bright disco shoot. Our beautiful real couple was perfect for the day, as their personalities matched our vibrant colour scheme perfectly — it was a real joy to bring everything together!” STYLED SHOOT 35
