This contemporary restaurant embraces the best of Nikkei cuisine. What’s Nikkei? I didn’t know either – it’s Japanese/Peruvian cooking – a fusion that’s oh-so-good. As you’d expect from a trendy Soho establishment, the restaurant interior is uber-stylish. Walk-ins can sit downstairs in the cocktail bar area (good to know!), and restaurant bookings will be led up the grand spiral staircase to your table, with views of the chefs at work. I chose the Signature Sharing Menu, the perfect entry into experiencing what Nikkei food is all about, and it didn’t disappoint. I started my Peruvian journey with a Pisco Sour, a classic cocktail originating from the Lima region in Peru. Following this, a bowl of miso soup and moreish padrón peppers – the best I’ve ever had, drizzled with a sticky miso sauce. Following this, Yellowtail ‘Nikkei Sashimi’ is elegantly served, and fish so incredibly fresh you could be on the coast. And from there, little eye-catching, mouthwatering dishes kept coming, from crispy squid to pork and prawn gyozas and, when I didn’t think I had any space left, our maître d arrived with slow-cooked braised beef short rib, purple potato purée, with a teriyaki jus. My advice – maybe skip lunch. The menu finishes with a decadent dessert of Kuro Goma Ice Cream, made with black sesame and chocolate. Founder and Owner Kurt Zdesar continues to evolve, pushing the boundaries and vision of the restaurant scene, and Chotto Matte has locations worldwide. Years later, Skyler attended a colleague’s barbecue where her friend’s boyfriend set her up with a friend who happened to be Iain. The pair went on a double date not long after. Skyler comments, “For months after, I would tell my parents he’s not my boyfriend – apparently, I was lying to myself too!” Fast forward time, the couple became engaged. There wasn’t a grand proposal, but a moment that felt just as significant came after their daughter was born. Skyler had been quite ill, stuck in the hospital with suspected sepsis. One night, after a long night of baby feedings, Iain lay down and said, “You know, I’m going to marry you one day. I’m not asking, so don’t say yes; it’s just a fact.” From that moment on, their journey together truly began, with all its beautiful ups and downs. Here, Skyler shares details about the big day… A court of 21 REAL WEDDINGS
I wore a custom Studio Levana gown created alongside Hannah at Lush Curve Bridal. I wanted a dress based on an outfit from a set of books that I hold very dear to my heart, we created a custom cape that would attach to the gown and then removed it for the evening. I chose a beautiful tiara from a small business on Etsy. Iain wore a gorgeous navy monochrome suit while the groomsmen wore navy suits with grey waistcoats, and the bridesmaids looked beautiful in grey dresses with navy accessories. One of our flowergirls wore a navy dress with grey accessories to match the bridesmaids, while our daughter wore a custom dress in navy with black tulle and rhinestones to simulate the night sky. Our goal was to celebrate with our loved ones and get very drunk! We loved the fantasy element at Morden Hall; the grounds were beautiful, reminding me of a garden out of a high fantasy book I’d read as well as Iain’s video games he’d play. Our beautiful silk flowers had a wild feel, created in our colour scheme of dusty blue, navy blue, silver and white. We both felt amazing, getting married is no easy thing. There were times we both felt overwhelmed but mainly loved by each other and everyone around us. 22
The cake was used as a centrepiece in the venue surrounded by flowers. Dani, our photographer, had our backs 100 per cent of the way! She helped me into my dress, ensured we spent time alone, and gave me a fan when I was too hot. If it hadn’t been for Akilah, our stylist and wedding coordinator, my ideas would have never been put to paper in a classy and elegant way. Both were such a dream team, working seamlessly together. Walking around the grounds and having our photographs taken stood out, it was one of the few moments of the day we got alone, and I think it shows in our photos. 23 REAL WEDDINGS

They had originally planned to attend a gig together, but when Loic caught Covid, their first meeting had to be postponed. A week later, Iara had a ticket to see Casablanca at the cinema. She agreed to meet him for a drink that afternoon, suggesting that if they hit it off, he could join her. To their delight, they ended up spending the entire day together watching the movie, enjoying dinner, and ending with Loic walking Iara home. It was such a meaningful day that it became a tradition: every year, they celebrate their anniversary by watching Casablanca. They even found a vintage poster of the film, which now hangs proudly in their living room. What drew Iara to Loic was his intelligence, sense of humour, and laid-back nature. He was open, communicative, and genuinely interested in getting to know her, and she felt exactly the same. As for the proposal, marriage wasn’t something Iara had ever pictured for herself. The idea of wearing a white dress and walking down the aisle just didn’t resonate with her. But for Loic, marriage mattered and after talking it through, they decided to do it their way. Loic planned a romantic tour and picnic at Highgate Cemetery, one of Iara’s favourite spots in London, as the setting for the proposal. But when the day came, Iara wasn’t feeling well. Instead, he proposed in their living room while she was watching Heartstopper. It wasn’t the grand gesture he had imagined, but it turned out to be perfectly, authentically them. We wanted a day that felt authentic! Something we could enjoy with our loved ones without worrying about pleasing everyone or sticking to what’s traditionally expected. For the ceremony, I wore a black Zimmermann dress with floral details and a dramatic high-neck made of black flowers. The second I saw it, I knew it was the one – super comfortable, unique and very me. We encouraged guests to have fun with the dress code: vintage. People came dressed in looks from the 50s, 60s, and 70s – my dad even took inspiration from Van Gogh for his outfit! We just wanted people to feel free to be creative and enjoy themselves. 28
For the party, I had a custom dress made by the fabulous Gigi from Gigi’s Dressing Room. She found this incredible green fabric and created a dress I actually rented, later worn by Katherine Ryan! Stacey from Maker Over absolutely nailed my hair and make-up. I’m a huge fan of old music and films, so we hired a vintage 1960s’ double-decker bus and handed out bubble guns for guests to play with. As my now-husband knows how much I love Elvis, he surprised me with a pink Cadillac! Loic had a custom suit made by Suit Supply. He wanted something classic yet distinctive, so he went with a grey suit inspired by Gomez Addams from The Addams Family films, complete with a beautiful skull corsage. Our photographer, Eva Tarnok, went above and beyond on the day – we adore our photos! I’ve always loved Eva’s style, I had worked with her for many years in the industry and knew she’d be perfect to capture our day not only as a photographer but as a friend. Our venues, The Blitz Factory and Electrowerkz, were a clear reflection of who we are. Both are quirky and unique, with incredible teams. When you’re aiming for something a bit outside the box, it can be hard to find vendors who really get your vision, but we were lucky. We weren’t about to ditch our style for tradition. Having people fly in from all over the world to celebrate with us meant the world. 29 REAL WEDDINGS

One of our friends is in a band, so we asked them to play two live sets. They even learned a few songs just for us, including our first dance! The vibe was all funk and disco, and everyone was more than ready to hit the dancefloor. For our mini-moon, we went to a metal festival in France where I wore a white wedding dress. Since I got married in black, it felt right to switch it up. Everyone else was in black, so it stood out, and getting congrats from strangers all weekend was the cherry on top. Electrowerkz let us raid their prop-filled storage room, and we went all in – digging up everything from skulls and melted candles to a giant monster mask. That became the foundation for our décor, with fairylights tying it all together. A wall of vintage speakers and amps made the perfect photobooth backdrop, and our graphic designer friend topped it off with a huge illustrated venue map featuring tiny dancing skeletons. We felt so happy and surrounded by love the entire day. 30

Today, they come in endless shapes, styles and flavours, designed not just to taste great, but to create a memorable experience. But their origins are far more traditional, and in many cases, quite surprising. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, “bride pies” were all the rage. Unlike the sweet confections we know today, these were savoury dishes. Alongside bride pies, there were also bride cakes! A sweet, yeasted bread spiced and filled with fruits. These gradually evolved into what we now know as fruit cakes or plum cakes. The bakes were often covered in white sugar icing, with the whiteness symbolising purity and wealth, since refined sugar was expensive and harder to obtain.
