Perhaps this is ingrained from school days, but September feels like a second chance at a new beginning. The January-life-change might not have gone to plan, then summer whizzes past you and before you know it, the kids are back at school and the weather is slumping back into grey days. It’s here that we find ourselves on a precipice – stay as we are or make a change before the year is out? I find this time of year quite invigorating! A second chance at starting over isn’t a failure of the first but instead, an opportunity. I find it easier to get to the gym, I’m eating better, and I feel generally more uplifted – minus the dark days trying to drag me down. For our September brides, you are the final wave of the wedding season! The days are still long enough for a full-day celebration, no one is sticking to their tulle anymore, and the evenings become a lot cosier (with some well-placed firepits). It’s your responsibility to see the season out with a bang and give your guests something to remember all winter long. Until next time! Flowers are the unsung heroes of weddings and contribute a lot to the overall theme. Their delicate beauty speaks more than just breathtaking colours and shapes; they are rich in history and can send a very romantic message. Understanding your chosen blooms helps with the overall decision-making process. It all depends on whether you want to send a message with your florals or if you’re more focused on the colour story. We’ll unpack everything you need to know about big-day blooms and also help you pick the right florist. To appreciate flowers at a wedding, we should understand where they come from. Like most traditional celebrations, they are steeped in history and often come from humble beginnings. The history of flowers at weddings starts in ancient Greece and Rome. In Greece, the included florals were laurel wreathes and olive branches and symbolised peace, victory, and eternity. In ancient Rome, a more practical approach was taken, and fresh herbs like rosemary and thyme were used to protect the couple against evil spirits; encouraging fertility and good fortune. The history of wedding flowers THE BLOOM The detail’s in Dive into the history behind wedding day florals and how to pick your bunch unsplash.com.@hayffield unsplash.com.@rebeccamatthews 22

Moving onto the Middle Ages, the people of this time took inspiration from the Romans and were focused on natural remedies to protect the newlyweds, such as fresh herbs and flowers. They used strong-smelling herbs (including garlic) to ward off evil spirits; which was paired with the scattering of fresh blooms in front of the bride’s path to protect her. Progressing into the Victorian era, we have the introduction of floriography and the rise of flowers as romantic symbols at weddings. One of the most popular floral choices from brides in this time was orange blossom – this is because Victoria wore an orange blossom crown on her wedding day to Albert. Orange blossom represents purity, chastity, and eternal love; the perfect message to send on your wedding day. Other popular blooms included ivy, which represents fidelity and strong bonds, and lilies of the valley, representing happiness and humility. It’s at this point in floral history that we align ourselves most with the modern bouquet practises. Typically, people will focus more on the colour scheme of flowers, however, the beautiful language of blooms remains ever present in our selection. unsplash.com.@debrupas FLOWERS 23

GIVING THEM A SECOND LIFE After falling in love with the blooms on your wedding day, knowing they only last a few days is disappointing to say the least. However, there are many ways you can give your flowers a second life! If you look after your bouquet on the day, you can then have them either expertly dried and framed, or set in resin to make a keepsake. If you want to preserve them, there are a few things to consider on your wedding day. Avoid the bouquet toss, your flowers will be battered from the throw and the scramble to win them. If you want the ‘throwing the bouquet’ moment, then you’ll need to get a throw-away bunch made in preparation. You will also need to keep your bouquet in water as much as possible throughout the day, and to store it in a cool, dark room before shipping it to your chosen preserver. On the day of postage, seek advice on how to pack and choose the fastest delivery available to you. Alternatively, a lot of couples give out floral arrangements at the end of the celebrations for people to take home with them. This is a great option if you want to leave the venue as clear as possible at the end of the night, and they act as great mementos for loved ones. A lot of brides also chose to take the floral arrangements to elderly homes, even better if you have a relative staying there. You may also decide to drop the arrangements off to graves of loved ones who couldn’t be there on your special day. It’s a beautiful way to share the love and to recognise those you would have loved to invite. CHOOSING THE RIGHT FLORIST Now that you have an idea of what blooms you would like to feature at your wedding, the time has come to book a florist. With everything else in the wedding market, there is lots of overwhelming choice and it’s hard to know who the right person for the job is. Here are few tips to help you decide on who should get the honour of supplying blooms for your special day. Check out their socials: When you load up their Instagram or Facebook page, does their work excite you? Can you picture those bunches on your wedding day? If not, then they might not be the one for you; your taste could simply differ from theirs and that’s absolutely fine, but it’s back to the drawing board. Check the reviews: The best way to get an understanding of a business is to check the reviews. If they conduct themselves well, the reviews will speak for themselves. However, the odd bad review can be very quickly explained and shouldn’t be held against the suppler – if there are lots then perhaps take it as a sign and walk away. Discuss customisation: If you have a particular vision for your wedding flowers, don’t be afraid to speak up with your chosen supplier. However, you need to remain open to their advice and understand that not all blooms are available. Wedding blooms depend on varying factors, such as season and location. pexels.com.@Dmitry Zvolskiy FLOWERS 25

MOMENTS Magical All things mystical would underline Suzanne and Ashley’s wedding at Brandshatch Place Images courtesy of Natalie Le Mare Photography Suzanne and Ashley met on Tinder, and it truly was love at first swipe – Ashley was Suzanne’s first and last swipe on the app! They met up the very next day and it was an instant connection for both. Suzanne adds, “it didn’t take me long to know that I was going to marry him (roughly two weeks). It took him a bit longer to realise this (nine years!), but it was worth the wait. Ten years on and we are happier than ever with a baby on the way.” You can see flashes of Suzanne’s baby bump in these wedding photos, which makes this romantic day even more special! So nines years after meeting, how did Ashely pop the question? After the sad passing of Suzanne’s dad in 2024, Suzanne and her mum decided to go on a cruise of the Norwegian Fjords; little did she know that Ashley was coming too. Here Ashley tells us more, “my plan was to wait until the next day to propose but fate had other ideas. That evening, Rob and I were leaving one of the bars, and across the room – staring straight at me – was Suzanne. I panicked! I did what any man would do: I dove behind the nearest cover, which just so happened to be a man selling roses. I had two options; jump overboard and swim for mainland OR grab a rose, and propose. I chose option two.” Brandshatch Place would be the venue for this this lovely couple’s wedding day. They needed a location that would lend itself well to their chosen theme, which was Dungeons & Dragons with a dash of fantasy role play games. With help from Chic Weddings, they turned Brandshatch Place into a whimsical woodland which included trees on half of the guest tables and low-level, natural woodland materials on the others. Suzanne details, “for decoration of the top table, there were two fullheight trees at either side that extended to meet in the middle, with moss and foliage at the base; this was paired with natural woodland materials.” For the cake, they opted for a three-tier extravaganza, topped with two figurines to represent their D&D characters – who were hunted by a red dragon swooping in from above. Suzanne wore a champagne-toned gown by White Rose, which had structural design changes, to remove the sleeves and make room for an ever-growing bump. The bridesmaids wore forest-green dresses with lace detailing and chiffon skirts, all of which suited the other shades of green at the wedding. Ashley wore a three-piece suit with a floral tie and pocket square and the groomsmen wore similar suits with green accessories. When Suzanne isn’t co-hosting a wedding, she’s a teacher and really came into her own during the entertainment segments. Suzanne adds, “Ashley has a unique way of expressing himself – we coined these ‘Ashisms’ – quirky references to phrases only he understands. We decided to turn them into a multiple-choice quiz! I was in my element getting guests to swap quizes for marking after the main meal.” To lean on the fantasy theme of the day, this couple crafted some well named mocktail “potions” called “Dragon’s Blood, Fairy Nectar, and Goblin’s Fortune”. After downing your magical mocktail, you could head over to the guestbook table and leave a “blessing scroll” for the newlyweds; which the master of ceremonies ensured were all collected, so that the couple could sift through them the next day. To entertain the children in attendance, Suzanne and Ashley set up a crafting station for them. Here they could decorate dragon mobiles and play with colours and stencils. Suzanne recalls, “We were very surprised when we were presented with a collage of messages and drawings dedicated to us! It was lovely to see the children occupied and being creative.” REAL WEDDINGS 27

e perfect venue for your wedding A beautiful 19th Century house and gardens with spectacular views across the valley.

Fran and Andy met each other through mutual friends and for this couple, sparks instantly flew! A relationship blossomed and nine years ago, Andy proposed to Fran on what was any normal day. It was a Monday night and Fran had finished work and was still in her nurse’s uniform when she walked into the biggest surprise of her life. Andy down on one knee and asking her to spend forever with him. Fran adds, “I remember our eldest child jumping around on the sofa from all the excitement.” The Tickled Trout would set the scene for their June wedding; the venue ticked all of Fran and Andy’s boxes – natural vibe, lovely garden, nice food, and equally as nice reception area outside. REAL WEDDINGS 37

To get the party started, Fran and Andy opted for tequila and limoncello shots, displayed on a board for guests to help themselves to. The guests could then make their way over to one of the long banquet tables, which all stemmed from the head table for the bride, groom, and three children. The reception area was adorned with linen table runners, candles, and eucalyptus to bring the whole event together. For flowers, Fran and Andy chose pampas, cream roses, eucalyptus, and gypsophila. Fran adds, “our special day was highlighted with fairylights and wooden lanterns! The cosy atmosphere this created was perfect, and we rounded this off with a basket full of blankets and flipflops (for when the inevitable heel pain kicks in).” Fran wore a dress that she wanted to emanate fresh, smart, and fashionable, which we believe she nailed! Andy wore a navy-blue suit from Charles Tyrwhitt, which paired perfectly with the fashionable aura this couple was oozing. Fran’s bridesmaids all wore olive green dresses, in varying styles, to highlight the green tones set by the eucalyptus – a super classy colour choice. Guests were treated to a range of entertainment, starting with a singer and acoustic guitar player, followed by a magician, and ended with a DJ who kept the party pumping for the rest of the night. Fran adds, “Perhaps we got the dancefloor grooving too much, because on the night we had an accident. Someone was dancing so much, they jumped and broke someone else’s toe, by accident of course!” 38

Dress to Impress Preparing for your first bridal appointment If you’ve always dreamed of trying on wedding dresses, and you’re a soon-to-be bride, then your time has come! Getting ready for your first bridal boutique appointment can be quite daunting, but in being prepared, we can brace ourselves for anything the day may throw at us. Before we dive into the nitty gritty of what you need to do, something you’ll need to consider is how you feel in changing rooms: do you breeze through without a second thought or are you agonising over every detail? If you resonate with the latter, then you need to make sure you are bringing people with you who hype you up! No Debbie-downers or glass-half-empty attitudes, we need good energy and kind honesty. Let’s dive in and get you on the road to your dream dress! freepik.com BRIDAL BOUTIQUES 49

 Checklist Gather a small group to take with you. The larger the group, the more opinions, and the more confusing it becomes. Tan more than 24 hours before. You’ll feel better about yourself if you’ve got a lick of tan on you, so make sure you bronze at least 24 hours before. Also ensure you shower before your appointment, so you aren’t staining the lovely gowns! Do your make-up and hair ahead of the appointment. So, you can get a feel for how you will look on the day, do your hair and make-up before trying on dresses. You’re going to want an easy hairstyle that won’t get caught in the dress and reach for the waterproof mascara – who knows how you’ll feel when you find the one. Nude underwear. This perhaps go without saying but wear underwear that can go undetected under most gowns. Get your nails and toes done and wear easy to slip off shoes. Having your nails and toes done always makes you feel more put together, pair this with your tan, hair, and make-up and you’ll be onto a winner. Don’t force it! You might not find the one on your first visit, so don’t be disheartened. It’s all about trying different styles and not giving up – there will be one that gives you that magical feeling. Set a budget. Much like picking your venue, you need to have a rough budget in mind, so you don’t blow it all on one thing. Give yourself an easy number to work around and rejoice if it comes under budget! Don’t forget accessories. If you are hoping to add a tiara, belt or any other accessory to your wedding look, then don’t forget to enquire on the day. They could make or break the whole look! Consider your venue. Your dress needs to fit in with the style of venue you are getting married in. Tying the knot al fresco in a woodland area? Go for something whimsical/ bohemian. Saying ‘I do’ in a manor house? Go for a sleek, elegant silhouette. Allow time for alterations. Make sure you are starting your wedding dress hunt at least nine months before the big day, as it’s likely you will need alterations. This isn’t something you want to skimp out on – you get to wear this dress for one day; it needs to look like it was made for you. Bring your wedding shoes with you. If you already have your wedding shoes or at least know the height of shoe you will be wearing – bring something that reflects the height you’ll be on the day. Keep an open mind. You will likely be asked to try on dresses that you haven’t picked out, keep an open mind when doing so. A lot of brides find that their dream dresses are ones they never would have considered! Trust your gut and communicate. Remember that this appointment is for you to find your dream dress. If something doesn’t feel right or someone in your entourage is making you unhappy, then speak up. unsplash.com.@marijeane unsplash.com.@sobolivska 50

WHO TO BRING ON YOUR VISIT? Now that you are prepared for your visit, the question arises of who you should bring with you. Naturally, at the top of your list should be a parent and your maid-of-honour. The two people who will hold your hand the most during the big day and the ones who will probably give you the most honest opinion. If you have a small group of bridesmaids, then bring them along – but we recommend capping wedding dress shopping at four people (not including yourself). Siblings can also fall into the invited list, if they are not part of the bridal party. ‘Less is more’ is certainly the rule when wedding dress shopping, as too many opinions in one room invariably leads to upset. Keep the group tight and to people who you know will be honest but not cruel – you can tell someone the truth without being hurtful or comedic. Some brides choose to go by themselves for the first couple of appointments and then bring their close ones for the final decision. If you’re concerned about your friends/family being hurtful, then perhaps do the initial shopping by yourself. Make a day of it if you are travelling a distance to your bridal boutique! If you’re making a trip for a specific boutique or heading to a new area, then plan some other activities for while you’re there. You could dress shop at midday and go out for dinner and a show afterwards? Or head off to a bar for some cocktails with the girls while you brainstorm wedding and hendo plans! It doesn’t have to be a sombre visit to one shop and home to your pyjamas, it’s worth making the most of the experience so you can relish in the excitement of being a bride. DIFFERENT WEDDING DRESS SILHOUETTES Now that you and your entourage are prepped and raring to go, it’s time to consider the different styles you’ll be seeing at your appointment. The sales advisor at the boutique will not expect you to be armed with all the jargon, however, having a loose understanding will enable you to more confidently communicate your desires. A-line. A classic for a reason and lends itself to any fabric like silk, tulle, and jacquard. This style features a fitted bodice with a fuller skirt and suits lots of body types. Ball gown. Much like the above, this style features a fitted bodice, but a ball gown has a much fuller skirt in comparison. This style is typically considered more glamorous and would lend itself well to theatrical/fairytale settings. Basque. This style of dress is increasing in popularity, with the ever-shifting tide of fashion, and features a longer bodice to elongate the torso. The waistline of the dress typically falls just under the belly button, invariably coming to a point, and can lead into a full or fitted skirt. Sheath. This style is an elevated mermaid silhouette and features a more elegant design. Whilst it is fitted, the style leaves room for elements such as sleaves or cathedral veils. Drop waist. Much like the basque, the design elongates the torso. However, whilst a basque waistline comes to a point, drop waist features a straight waistline just under the belly button. Empire. Going in the opposite direction, the empire waistline sits just under the bust and skims past the rest of the body in a loose slimline skirt. This style gives a sense of period-inspired fashion and would be found in the halls of a manor house. Mermaid. A classic style like the A-line and can be very flattering on lots of body types. It’s fitted all the way down to the knees, at which point it flares out in to a small but full skirt. Mermaid cuts work well in lacy fabrics or satin and the skirt shape can be adventurous or safe. Princess. Not to be mistaken for a ballgown, this style has no clear waistline but has a full skirt and is fitted to the curves of the person in it. Short. If you’re not one for a long dress of any style, then you may gravitate to a shorter one. Not only ideal for summer weddings, but they also enable lots of movement and motion, so would be great for a second outfit choice at the reception when you get your dancing shoes on! jonathanborba.46graus.com BRIDAL BOUTIQUES 51
