Karter and Ernso’s special day at Highcliffe Castle in Dorset enjoyed a pretty pink and blue colour theme Images courtesy of Laura Dean Photography Karter and Ernso met on Tinder and enjoyed their first date at a cat café. “We are an online success story!” Karter tells us. “We enjoyed a long-distance relationship with both of us based in Florida for two-and-a-half years before moving in together.” Ernso proposed in Amsterdam during a trip to the Netherlands. “Our families have always wanted to visit the UK, so planning a UK-based wedding provided a great opportunity to travel with our loved ones and celebrate the best day of our lives,” Karter tells us. The couple chose Highcliffe Castle in Christchurch, Dorset, as their venue, which was decorated with a pink-and-blue colour theme. “One of our top priorities was to have incredible flowers, and our chosen florist made our dream come to life,” Karter says. Karter wore the dress called Joan by Justin Alexander. “It looked so elegant when I first tried it on, and it instantly made me feel like a princess,” she tells us. “Ernso’s little cousin, Hania, wore a cute pink and blue dress to tie in with our wedding theme, and our beautiful bridesmaids wore full-length rose-coloured gowns.” Karter and Ernso entertained their loved ones with plenty of drinks and snacks plus great music, which got everybody up dancing. “Our favourite memories are dancing with our friends and family, and celebrating our love in such a beautiful location,” Karter says. Maddie and Dan met at the University of Portsmouth after they both joined the Ski Society. “We got chatting and became friends. I wasn’t looking for a relationship, but he was persistent. Thankfully, he didn’t give up, because before long I found myself falling for him too!” Dan proposed during a road trip from the UK to Southern Italy in his Porsche 911. “We planned to drive through France, Switzerland and Germany before arriving at Lake Como,” Maddie tells us. “I had a feeling a proposal might happen because in the weeks leading up to the trip, Dan kept dropping hints! As I turned to admire the sunset at Lake Como, Dan was down on one knee asking, ‘Will you marry me?’ It was a perfectly timed surprise.” The couple knew they wanted a barn wedding. “We’d visited a few venues before The Tithe Barn, but they weren’t quite right. We were looking for something that combined rustic character with a modern, elegant feel,” Maddie tells us. “The moment we walked into The Tithe Barn, we knew we’d found exactly what we were looking for. It had all the charm of a traditional barn, but with a beautifully modern interior, stunning oak beams and tall ceilings. It gave us that sense of grandeur while still feeling relaxed and full of character.” The surrounding grounds were perfect for an outdoor drinks reception. “The Milking Parlour was a feature we loved,” Maddie says. “It was the perfect space to spend the morning getting ready with my bridesmaids before the celebrations began.” The couple wanted to embrace the natural beauty of The Tithe Barn and complement what was already there. “Our colour palette was inspired by soft coral tones, with blush pink, baby pink, soft orange, cream and warm neutrals creating a fresh, romantic feel,” Maddie says. “I’ve always loved bright, statement florals, so we wanted sustainable flowers that would really pop against the barn’s light, airy interior without feeling overpowering. Many of the arrangements were used to line the aisle during our ceremony and repurposed for the reception.” One of Maddie and Dan’s favourite styling decisions was the lighting. “Every time we visited The Tithe Barn, we’d seen couples choose classic fairylights draped across the ceiling, and while they looked beautiful, we wanted to do something different,” Maddie says. “We opted for large statement festoon lights stretching across the full height of the barn. They created such an incredible atmosphere, especially as the evening drew in, and ended up being one of the features guests commented on the most.” The couple made sure their guests were well fed and had a great selection of drinks throughout the “Our incredible florist, Someflower, brought our vision to life, creating stunning arrangements that added warmth and colour throughout the venue. day. “Tourelle Cuisine provided our catering, and they were exceptional,” Maddie tells us. “There was potted ham hock with beetroot and horseradish chutney or goat’s cheese salad with wild rocket, aubergine caviar and green olive salsa to start. For the main course, we had slow-cooked beef cheeks with potato rosti, a rich Burgundy wine jus, and creamy dauphinoise potatoes. Our vegetarian option was a wild mushroom filo pastry on sweet potato rosti with roasted vine tomatoes and a Madeira sauce. Dessert was a trio of passion fruit bavarois, a chocolate Armagnac crunch torte with crème anglaise, and a mascarpone tart topped with fresh raspberries and blackberry coulis.” Maddie chose the Debussy bridal dress by Suzanne Neville. “It was made to measure to ensure the perfect fit because I’m very petite,” she tells us. “I fell in love with the intricate floral detailing that felt romantic, elegant and timeless.” Dan chose an Uppington navy mohair suit styled with a grey waistcoat, a pair of brown Loake shoes and an olive paisley silk tie from Swagger & Swoon. “The groomsmen wore the same navy suits but with navy waistcoats and moss green ties to match the bridesmaids’ one-shoulder satin dresses,” Maddie explains. Maddie and Dan chose the harpist Heather Wrighton to perform during their ceremony, drinks reception and wedding breakfast. “It added a beautiful, elegant feel to our day,” Maddie explains. “Heather switched to her Electro Acoustic Celtic Harp for the outdoor drinks reception, giving the music a fresh, modern twist.” For their evening reception, the couple booked the band Beat Junkie. “To our surprise, the band’s lead vocalist was actually Mike Woodhams, who finished as the runner-up on Britain’s Got Talent in 2024!” Maddie tells us. “From the moment they started playing, the energy in the room was incredible. A highlight was hearing them perform our first dance song. As this track reached its upbeat section, we invited everyone on to the dancefloor to celebrate with us. A moment no one saw coming was when two giant cut-outs of our beloved Siamese cats, Lumi and Miso, were carried out! The reaction was priceless, with laughter and cheers as our furry family members made their unexpected appearance. Anyone who knows us knows how obsessed we are with our cats, so it felt like the perfect way to include them in our wedding day, even if they couldn’t be there in person. Looking around the room and seeing all of our favourite people smiling, singing and holding giant cat heads in the air is a memory we’ll never forget - it was completely unexpected!” REAL WEDDINGS 27

The Instagram effect ON WEDDING VENUES How social media is reshaping the industry In an era where a single photograph can reach millions of viewers within hours, wedding venues are experiencing a seismic shift in how they attract couples and showcase their spaces. Instagram has evolved from a simple photo-sharing app into the most powerful marketing tool the wedding industry has ever seen and it’s fundamentally changing what couples look for in a venue. We spoke with Nick from Country House Weddings (countryhouseweddings. co.uk) to explore how social media, particularly Instagram and TikTok is reshaping venue selection, design, and the entire wedding experience. THE RISE OF INSTAGRAM-WORTHY VENUES “Ten years ago, couples primarily chose venues based on capacity, location, and price,” explains Nick “Today, the first question whether said or not is really: ‘How Instagram-worthy is it?’. The visual appeal of a space has become just as important, and sometimes more important than traditional practical considerations.” This shift reflects a broader change in how couples approach their weddings. The ceremony and reception are no longer private family affairs but shareable content that will be viewed, liked, and commented on by hundreds to thousands of people. As a result, venues with distinctive architectural features, dramatic backdrops, and photogenic details have seen demand skyrocket. “Country houses, venues with statement staircases, and spaces with abundant natural light are particularly popular,” Nick notes. “These environments photograph beautifully and provide those ‘wow’ moments that translate perfectly to social media, without overwhelming the couple.” HOW VENUES ARE ADAPTING TO INSTAGRAM CULTURE Smart venue owners are responding to this Instagram-driven demand by strategically enhancing their spaces with social media in mind. According to Nick, this goes far beyond simply having pretty spaces. “To accommodate, many spaces have invested in designated ‘photo opportunities’ throughout the properties,” he explains. “This might be a swing hanging from an ancient oak tree or a flower wall that’s refreshed seasonally. These aren’t just decorative, rather they’re carefully designed Instagram moments that if well done, look completely natural and spontaneous.” THE POWER OF USER-GENERATED CONTENT Perhaps the most significant impact of Images sourced from unsplash.com 38
Instagram on wedding venues is the rise of user-generated content as a marketing powerhouse. Traditional advertising has been largely replaced by the authentic images newlyweds share from their big- day celebrations. “When a couple posts photos from their wedding and tags our venue, they’re essentially providing a testimonial to their entire network,” says Nick. “That organic reach is invaluable. We’ve had couples book with us purely because they saw a friend’s wedding photos on Instagram and fell in love with the space.” Many venues now actively encourage this user-generated content by creating unique hashtags, offering incentives for tagging the venue, and even featuring couples’ photos on their official accounts. This creates a symbiotic relationship: couples get the pleasure of being featured on a popular wedding venue account, while venues benefit from fresh, authentic content that resonates with prospective couples. THE PRESSURE TO PERFORM: WHEN INSTAGRAM EXPECTATIONS MEET REALITY While Instagram has created tremendous opportunities for venues, it has also introduced new challenges and pressures. Nick is candid about the potential downsides. “We’ve noticed that some couples spend so much time planning for the perfect Instagram shots that they forget to actually enjoy their wedding,” he observes. “There’s pressure to recreate specific aesthetics they’ve seen online, sometimes at the expense of what they genuinely want or what works best for their celebration.” “Our role has evolved to include managing these expectations,” Nick explains. “We show couples how to achieve beautiful photos while maintaining authenticity and ensuring they don’t sacrifice the experience for the content.” SEASONAL AESTHETICS AND TRENDING STYLES Instagram has dramatically accelerated the pace of wedding trend cycles. Styles that once remained popular for years now shift seasonally, driven by what’s currently performing well on social media. “We’ve seen rustic barn weddings give way to minimalist industrial spaces, which then evolved into romantic garden parties, and now we’re in an era of maximalist, moody aesthetics,” notes Nick. “Each shift is directly traceable to what’s trending on Instagram and other visual platforms.” The most successful venues, according to Nick, are those with classic, versatile spaces that can be dressed to match current trends rather than those locked into a specific style. THE DEMOCRATISATION OF VENUE DISCOVERY On the positive side, Instagram has democratised venue discovery in ways that benefit both couples and venues. Previously, couples typically found venues through traditional advertising, wedding fairs, or word-of-mouth recommendations, which heavily favoured established venues with large marketing budgets. “Instagram has levelled the playing field,” says Nick. “A smaller, boutique venue with beautiful spaces and strong visual content can now compete with major established venues.” SOCIAL MEDIA 39
