Black-tie Hannah and Brad’s timeless wedding at Sopley Mill combined classic décor, stunning attire and riverside romance Images courtesy of Clearly Wild Photography These lovebirds met at college in 2014 and were far more interested in each other than in their course! Fast forward through the years and Brad popped the question in July 2023 while watching the sunset on a beautiful beach in Kos, Greece. Of course, Hannah said “yes,” and together, they planned the most beautiful celebration. SETTING THE SCENE Sopley Mill was the perfect venue for their big day. Nestled in the gorgeous English countryside with a river running through the grounds, it offered countless photographic hotspots and calming settings to reflect the day. The couple opted for a blacktie theme, classy and classic against the countryside backdrop. Once they decided on the theme, the décor fell into place. The bride comments, “Our flowers were all white, with deep green foliage. We also wanted to keep our décor classic, with fairylights and clean-cut lines.” They incorporated signage with flower arrangements, a white carpet lining the aisle and beaded charger plates to make the table settings ‘pop’. “We also featured a lovely ‘pimp my prosecco’ station set along the river, and were lucky enough to have gorgeous sunshine,” says Hannah. Most of the stationery she made herself, discovering a new hobby along the way. The centrepieces doubled as aisle displays, cleverly moved after the vows to get the most value for money! FOOD FOR THOUGHT While getting ready in the bridal suite, the wedding party enjoyed prosecco alongside a delightful platter of croissants, granola pots, cheeses and hams to keep everyone going. The canapés went down a treat with guests, including beetroot and goat’s cheese with crumbled pistachio, jerk chicken with mango and halloumi with yoghurt and pomegranate cups. For the wedding breakfast, guests had a choice of starters: barbecue Korean pork, chicken Caesar salad with a fresh hen’s egg or burrata with tomato. Each person also received a personalised menu card that doubled as their place name. For mains, the options were roasted cauliflower steak, grilled steak with peppercorn sauce or chicken wrapped in Parma ham, all served with seasonal vegetables and delicious potatoes. Guests still talk about the evening food! The lovebirds served a rustic lasagne with homemade garlic bread outside under the sunset by the river - it was gorgeous! LOOKING THE PART The bride’s dress was Ortensia by Maggie Sottero, which fit like a glove. “It was the first dress I tried and I fell in love; the veil really brought it to life,” says Hannah. “I tried on a few after that, but they didn’t come close!” Brad wore a stunning black tuxedo with a velvet jacket. “We chose the large Tom Ford-style bow tie and shiny black shoes to make the look stand out,” says the bride. His outfit featured Belgravia velvet and obsidian with a black scoop waistcoat and trousers, a marcella shirt, a black bat-wing bow tie and a white satin square. The groomsmen also wore black tuxedos but not velvet, so the groom would stand out. Their outfits included jetblack three-piece suits, marcella shirts, black bat-wing bow ties and white satin squares. The couple gifted each groomsman a pair of cufflinks as a wedding present. The bridesmaids wore black, with the maid-of-honour in a satin dress from Six Stories and the two other bridesmaids in chiffon gowns from Ever Pretty. TIME TO CELEBRATE To entertain guests, the couple hired a live singer for the ceremony, who performed while guests took their seats outside against the glorious backdrop of the River Avon. She then sang the bride down the aisle and throughout the ceremony. Later, she switched to more upbeat music, turning the wedding breakfast into a lively, interactive celebration. “This was unexpectedly our favourite part of the day,” says the bride. A memorable highlight was the couple’s sausage dogs, Ralph and Rocky. “They can be noisy, so they didn’t come to the ceremony… but they did arrive in their little black tuxedos as our additional groomsmen to meet the guests and have photos with us,” says Hannah. Lily and Mike both worked for an airline and first met on a flight to Shanghai. That evening, after landing, the crew headed out for dinner. Between courses and conversation, sparks began to fly and before long, messaging each other on Facebook - the rest is history! During a cruise to Antarctica, Mike had the perfect proposal in mind. He planned to pop the question ashore, but the setting was a little too public. Next, he considered their cabin balcony, only for guests on either side to step out at just the wrong moment. Not to be deterred, Mike dropped to one knee inside the cabin, creating an intimate proposal they’ll never forget. SETTING THE SCENE Mike had been a chorister at Romsey Abbey and had always dreamed of marrying there. So, the couple exchanged vows surrounded by loved ones in the historic setting before continuing celebrations at Parley Manor. “We fell in love with the beautiful gardens, house and marquee,” Lily explains. “It’s also close to the New Forest, where Mike grew up, which made it feel even more special.” The bridal bouquets and centrepieces were filled with meaningful touches. It featured olive leaves to honour Mike’s Cypriot heritage, thistles as a nod to his mother’s Scottish roots and roses to represent England and the bride. Aviation-inspired details reflected how their love story began. An airport arrivals board displayed the seating plan, tables were named after destinations they’d visited together, and guests received favours reminiscent of in-flight treats, including miniature bottles of Baileys. Mike also wore vintage plane cufflinks for a subtle finishing touch. The wedding breakfast featured a relaxed barbecue and salad bar to ensure no one went hungry. “In the evening, we served wood-fired pizzas,” says the bride. “Mike’s mum made delicious macarons, and our cake layers were lemon, elderflower and raspberry.” LOOKING THE PART The bride looked stunning in a Marilee New York gown named Jacqueline. “Mum cried when I first tried it on!” Lily recalls. “I tried two other dresses afterwards, but when I went back to Jacqueline, she cried again – that’s when I knew it was the one.” The groom wore a light grey wool suit from Moss with a lilac tie. His groomsmen complemented the look in navy suits with matching ties, coordinating beautifully with the bridesmaids’ lilac gowns. 30
TIME TO CELEBRATE Guests were entertained throughout the day. The Minster String Quartet performed in the gardens at Parley Manor during the drinks reception, adding a romantic ambience, while a magician delighted guests of all ages with close-up tricks. In the evening, a live band and DJ ensured the dancefloor stayed full. There were many unforgettable highlights. “For me, it was having everyone together and sipping Champagne in the Rolls-Royce,” says Lily. “For Mike, the moment that stood out was the long walk back down the aisle at Romsey Abbey after the ceremony, and dancing to the live band in the evening.” REAL WEDDINGS 31

Penny and Rob’s enchanting New Forest wedding brought Lord of the Rings vibes to life in the iconic New Forest Images courtesy of Mia Hooper Photography These lovebirds met at a blue-themed university party in 2010 and it was very much a love-at-first-sight moment. After 13 years together, Rob proposed in April 2023 at the Yorkshire Arboretum, getting down on one knee beneath a pear-blossom tree. The day was filled with food, blossoms and even red squirrels - Penny’s favourite animal. Rob had chosen the arboretum in spring, as it was the season when the bluebells were in bloom. The couple had always envisioned an outdoor wedding and loved the ancient New Forest trees. “It created a beautiful and mystical setting for our big day,” says Penny. “We both adore Lord of the Rings and this is the British version of cinematic scenery.” Another reason they chose this venue was that Simon and the team from Weddings in The Wood made the day run smoothly. They were a brilliant team, and the couple would happily recommend them to anyone wanting an alternative setting for an event. The couple themed their wedding around the forest, complementing the greens and natural surroundings with pastel blues and pinks, along with a splash of orange. They wanted to make as much use of the stunning setting as possible, choosing their favourite spot in the woods and opting for theatre-style seating rather than a long, traditional aisle. They were surrounded by talented and loving friends. During the ceremony, friends played music in the forest and a close friend, dressed as a wizard, officiated the wedding. They kept décor and stationery to a minimum, as it was the people and the venue that made the day truly special. Food is a massive part of the lovebirds’ lives, so they knew it would be one of their biggest priorities. “We wanted our love of food to shine at our wedding,” says the bride. “The team at The Little Kitchen Company helped us with our vision for Italian-style sharing platters so that the wedding meal was not only delicious, but an interactive centrepiece.” They felt this was a great way to get guests talking and allowing everyone to portion exactly what they wanted and enjoyed. They had The Bao Beast team cater their reception, providing a variety of options for everyone, and the baos were a huge hit. The reception and the food are still being talked about by guests. The bride did something unusual for her dress, she designed it herself! “I worked alongside Liz from Elizabeth Van Stone Bridal to create my dream wedding dress,” comments Penny. “When Rob and I got engaged, we were surrounded by beautiful blossoms and flowers, and I wanted to capture our engagement plus the day’s excitement in my dress. It also had a beautiful mix of fantasy and bridal, which fit in perfectly with the venue and our Lord of the Rings-inspired wedding.” The groom had always wanted a tailored suit, and his wedding was the perfect opportunity. He comments, “I’ve always felt comfortable in a suit, but wanted something special. I went for a royal blue with elements of gold and added an orange tie because the shade makes me feel happy.” They were fortunate that the venue gave them the option to book an activity as part of the venue hire, one of which was axe-throwing. “We thought it was a fun and fantastic way to entertain guests before the meal,” comments Penny. “Everyone had a go and it brought us so much joy to see our guests having such a great time. Of course, we both threw a few axes as well - Rob is a much better axe-thrower! “I think one of our biggest highlights of the day was standing at the top of the aisle in a stunning natural setting, surrounded by the people who mean everything to us, declaring our love to each other and getting married by a wizard.” It was a day that perfectly reflected Penny and Rob’s personalities, passions and love for one another in a magical setting set among the trees.
