Face facts Five truths everyone should know about skincare Laura Porter (www.fab-skincare.co.uk) is a dedicated facialist and skincare expert. Having treated thousands of faces during her career, she has curated five, lesser known but vital tips that can make the biggest difference to your skin as you prepare for the big day. “After years of treating every skin type under the sun, I’ve realised there are a few truths that could save people so much stress and money!” Laura says. “Whether you’re a skincare obsessive or a total newbie, these facts will make all the difference.” 1. MORE ISN’T BETTER, CONSISTENCY IS. “One of the biggest mistakes I see is product overload. Using too many active ingredients at once can damage your skin barrier and lead to inflammation. A simple routine with highquality ingredients used consistently will always outperform a complex one used sporadically. Your skin loves routine, treat it like a habit, not a quick fix.” 2. YOUR PILLOWCASE MATTERS MORE THAN YOU THINK. “Dirty or overly absorbent pillowcases, made from fabrics like cotton, can soak up your skincare and contribute to breakouts or irritation. Switching to a silk or satin pillowcase helps reduce friction, retains moisture, and can even support smoother skin and hair.” 3. SPF ISN’T JUST FOR SUNNY DAYS, AND NOT ALL SPFS ARE EQUAL. “UV damage happens even on cloudy days, and even through windows. But more importantly, many people don’t apply enough sunscreen. You need a full teaspoon for the face and neck, and reapplication is key if you’re outside or exposed to daylight for long periods, especially when using retinoids or acids.” 4. YOU DON’T ALWAYS NEED A PURGE. BREAKOUTS AREN’T PROOF SOMETHING IS WORKING. “The belief that your skin needs to get worse before it gets better? Not always true. While some actives like retinoids may cause initial sensitivity, persistent breakouts could mean the product isn’t right for your skin. Don’t push through unnecessary irritation, sometimes your skin is telling you to stop and it’s best to speak to an expert if you’re unsure.” 5. SKIN HEALTH STARTS BEFORE YOUR CLEANSER. “Hydration, stress, sleep, hormones, and diet all show up in your skin. No product can outperform poor lifestyle habits. Supporting your skin from the inside out is super important, think omega-3s, low sugar intake, proper hydration, and even regulating cortisol can visibly improve texture, glow, and inflammation.” BEAUTY FEATURE 61
