89 EXPERT ADVICE FINDING THE ONE I’m searching for the perfect dress to suit my plus size figure, what would you suggest? When it comes to finding your dream gown, it’s very much about your shape and not your size. For example, I’ve experienced a lot of plus size brides being told they can’t wear a fitted dress, simply because they’re plus size, but this is not the case at all. The first step is to know your body and learn what shape you are, which areas you are confident with and which areas you’d rather disguise. A lot of my curvy ladies hate their arms and want to hide them in sleeves, but we quite often find that sleeves draw more attention to your arms than if you were to have a Bardot or little cap sleeve. Remember that it’s all about balance; we all aim for that desirable hourglass figure and that’s what we want your dress to give an illusion of, no matter what shape or size you are. If you have small hips and wider shoulders, consider an A-line to balance out your shape; if you love a fitted dress but are concerned about your waist or mum-tum, try a corset back for shape and remember that ruching is your friend! It’s very important when booking an appointment at a bridal store, that you ensure they cater to plus size brides. Although stores may say their dresses are available up to a size 36, they may not have any plus size samples available in store. It can be upsetting, as a size 24 lady, turning up at a shop that supposedly caters for plus sizes to find they only have size 12 samples. Finally, what’s most important is how you feel in the dress. If you feel confident, beautiful and can’t stop twirling, that’s the one for you! How can I ensure it won’t budge throughout the day? Make-up technology really does have you covered, there are waterproof versions of almost everything and the main culprits for smudging are eyeliner and mascara. Sometimes wearing too much mascara can look a little clumpy, so using individual eyelashes means you need less mascara but still get that full and fluttery lashline – it’s a great way to give the eyes a long-lasting wow factor. As well as tears, our natural oils can remove make-up – especially under the eyes. Ensure your concealer is fully set with a hyaluronic powder and use a tubing mascara for bottom lashes. These mascaras don’t get moved by grease or oil and only come off with warm or hot water – they’re great for summer and a honeymoon too. My last tip is to make sure you dab those tears away before they run down the face. Your eye make-up will be foolproof, but tears can leave track marks through foundation and blusher – keep a tissue to hand. Pop travel eyedrops in your bridal bag to refresh if your eyes look red or tired and you’ll look perfect all day and night.
