71 EXPERT ADVICE Our experts give their advice to help you look your big-day best Q&A A VINTAGE CLASSIC Q: For our vintage-style wedding, I want a dress that will suit our big-day theme. What would you suggest? The term vintage refers to a particular historical-style or period that has come into fashion once again. The first most crucial decision is whether you’re looking for something that’s of a specific era such as the 1920s with flapper girl or Great Gatsby-style gowns, or a tea-length dress for a 1950s celebration. As the request is for a vintage-style, two quick and easy ways to achieve this is by using lace and pearls. Therefore, our current top pick would be the fabulous Antonia wedding gown by Maggie Sottero. This full-on lace sheath gown with classic covered buttons can be purchased in antique ivory and gives an instant vintage feel – particularly when styled with classic pearl accessories. Think single teardrop earrings, a high tight bun and either a pearl choker or two long tiers of pearl dripping down to the mid rift. The sleeves give a modern twist to the look, but also provide excellent coverage and elegance. Plus, the addition of a shrug or cape would work beautifully for a winter wedding. What would you suggest? It’s essential to work with the style of your dress when choosing your bridal hairstyle, but that doesn’t mean your options are limited, far from it! Off-the-shoulder dresses are timeless and suit a polished low bun perfectly. You can go for a sleek and glossy look for a more Hollywood glam-style or a more textured, wavy version with some volume and pieces left out around the front to soften the face and neckline. Your stylist will be able to help you decide which of these would best suit your face shape, personality and dress. Another elegant-style that looks beautiful with an asymmetric dress is Hollywood waves. Like your dress, it’s a timeless classic that’s perfect if you like to wear your hair down or are maybe a little more self-conscious of your shoulders. Lastly, if you fancy something a little more on-trend but still stunningly romantic, a low wavy ponytail tied with a ribbon or some scattered pearls looks just stunning.
