CAKES 63 Wedding cake trends for 2020 are just as exciting as we’d hoped, with our couples set to experiment and move away from the smooth buttercream and fondant icing to look at creating textured cakes that add a bit of depth to their design. Muted colours are a must for 2020, olive greens, white and metallics combine perfectly to give you that calm elegant feel for your cake. Cake stands will play a more important role than before with circular or hexagonal rose gold hoop stands that are perfect to showcase your cakes. Flavours are also getting more adventurous, moving away from the traditional and adding modern tiers like passion fruit and mango. Get set to experiment with your designs for 2020, even unstacked wedding cakes are making their debut. Maxine Clark | Bakehouse 94 | bakehouse94.co.uk A cake is a huge part of wedding traditions and should be an integral part of a couple’s special day. Whilst I like couples to be as adventurous as possible when it comes to their cake, there’s still a huge demand for semi-naked and simple but classy buttercream decoration. It’s the little touches that make it that more special to the couple. This could include the same flowers as the bouquet, fruits of the season or any other embellishments. For 2020 and 2021 my experience so far is that couples are becoming more daring with their designs. We have cruise ship-themed cakes, tree trunks, Alice In Wonderland, Peaky Blinders  and two-sided cakes with the couple having one side of the cake each representing their styles, hobbies and interests. Colours of decoration are important if you want them to match the theme, so the cake designer needs to liaise with the venue dresser and florist. Whilst this year coral is the colour, it’s down to personal choice. Flavours are huge with pink- champagne, white chocolate and raspberry being popular but the regular lemon, chocolate, vanilla are still the staple requests. But why not try carrot, toffee and prosecco- flavoured cake with pink lemonade buttercream as alternatives and many other combinations that your cake designer should advise on? Adrian Pemberton | Tree House Cakes | treehousecakes.co.uk Next year is set for some exciting trends with more hexagonal and geometric themes coming through. Brides are also becoming more adventurous and going for bolder designs with black and navy cakes appearing on the scene. Floating tiers and acrylic separators are a new idea just making their way into new designs too. Bakes adorned with sugar flowers, floral hoop stands, metallic décor and glitter tiers are here to stay. The days of just having fruit cake or simple sponge flavours like chocolate are long gone and hurrah to that! Many brides are now choosing more interesting flavours for their guests to enjoy. Cherry Bakewell, chocolate orange, lemon and elderflower and salted caramel have been very popular this year!
