TRANSPORT 63  TOP TRANSPORT DRESS VS CAR “It can be difficult to get in and out of a two-door vehicle in your gown. If you’re in any doubt go and sit inside the vehicle before you book and see how you feel,” says Mike Neilson of Vanilla Moon Weddings. “Our campers have double doors on the side of the vehicles so access is brilliant.” Any car and dress combo will look good but there are some practicalities to consider, as Tom Larkin of Three Counties Wedding Cars explains. “Pencil and mermaid designs can make it difficult to get in and out of cars elegantly so make sure they’re not too tight, or have a split. Matching the shade of your dress and car may seem like a good idea but contrasting colours work better on your photos. We recommend black vehicles over ivory.” When choosing you car, also consider the look you’re trying to achieve. “A Ferrari at a festival-style wedding would look out of place, just like a camper at a Disney wedding,” says Anna Davidson of Vintage Camper Hire. “The bench back seat in Betsy, our camper, gives plenty of leg room for reams of tulle, posh shoes, flowers and there’s also space in her ample rear for any luggage.” Don’t feel you have to fill every seat; it can get hot and cramped, which could crease your dress. Always allow an extra seat space for this reason. – Mike PLANNING YOUR ROUTE “Older forms of transport tend to be much slower than their modern counterparts so allow extra travel time when planning your day,” says Ben. “Tell your car company about any local roadworks, diversions or events that are happening that could effect traffic and also what time you want to arrive at the ceremony,” says Mike. Take advice from your pro and stick to the times they give you. “They’ll have the experience to get you to the ceremony on time,” says Tom. “Bear in mind that there may be routes that are unsuitable for some cars. Humpback bridges may be no good for limousines as they can be beached on them and some vintage cars might not be able to turn very tight corners as they have large turning circles,” he adds. Plan photos for after the ceremony when you’re more relaxed either on route to your reception or nip to a beauty spot that’s just past walking distance. – Anna PRO’S THE WAY TO GO “Going with friends can be a good way to save money but you have to accept the risk and consequences if something goes wrong. Professionals can go a long way to make your day extra special and reduce any stress,” says Mike. Your journey needs to be as relaxed as possible. “Friends are emotionally attached so they might not have the cool professional attitude required to keep the bride calm,” says Tom.
