In March 2023, just a few days before Lucy’s birthday, Davey proposed in front of the Eiffel Tower. “He knew how much I loved Paris, so just being there already felt special. Our flight had been delayed and we were running a bit late, but luckily we made it to dinner. After dessert, Davey suggested we go outside to take a photo just as the Eiffel Tower was about to sparkle on the hour. I didn’t think much of it, he’s always loved taking photos, so it felt completely normal. Then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was such a beautiful moment, one I’ll never forget. We’d planned to spend the first day in Paris just the two of us, then join my family at Disneyland for the rest of the trip, which made it even more perfect!” After setting the big date, the couple set about finding their wedding venue. “Davey and I both knew we wanted a barn wedding. Once we looked at Fishley Hall, we never made it to another venue as we fell in love with it. We wanted a wedding that felt relaxed, fun and easy-going, similar to how we think we are as people, and Fishley Hall ticked every single box.” For the colour palette, Lucy and Davey kept it neutral, with the addition of bright flowers to bring a pop of colour and energy to the styling. “Sunflowers are my favourite, so they were included in the bouquets, adding a personal touch to the floral design,” shares Lucy. “For Davey and the groomsmen, Davey’s favourite colour is red, so that was his colour buttonhole.” The tablescaping was kept unfussy to match the couple’s informal, barbecue-style meal. “We used wildflowers in vases, soft fabric runners, and our favourite sweets, Haribos, as part of the table setup.” Keeping stationery to a minimum, one of their favourite details was a hand-drawn illustration of their venue by Rachael Bull Design. “It became our guestbook and also worked beautifully as a centrepiece.” To personalise the day, the pair included napkins featuring their dog Drizzle, and a sweet station filled with their favourites. “Inside the venue, we used festoon lighting, soft drapes, disco balls, and a ‘Til Death Do Us Party’ sign to create the perfect setting for a great night,” adds Lucy. The bride wore a Wona gown called Moore from Pure Brides. “This was the second dress I’d tried on and I’d never felt so beautiful; I looked at myself in the mirror and lost my breath,” recalls Lucy. Davey looked the part in a pale fitted lounge suit, called Florence, with a wine-coloured satin bow tie and matching braces. The groomsmen were all matching, while the bridesmaids complemented the ensemble in multiway dresses in an oyster hue. After the wedding ceremony, guests enjoyed welcome drinks from a prosecco wall on the lawn; there were also garden games outside and seating. As it was such a lovely day, having the outdoor bar setup in the courtyard was perfect as all guests mingled in the sunshine. “During this, we had the most amazing violinist, Cristinel Bacanu who played a variety of songs all of our choosing,” adds Lucy. “Never have I heard Burna Boy Last Last be played the way he performed it, it was amazing. To round off the night, DJ Pink Fusion kept the music playing all day (he arrived at 4pm), so this was perfect background noise when outside and great vibes when inside dancing.” A highlight of the day for Lucy was getting ready in the morning with her bridesmaids and family, as well as walking down the aisle. “Davey’s reaction was everything, I felt lucky to marry the man that I love. My dad has never felt so proud.” REAL WEDDINGS 23

Katy and Joe met back in early 2016 at a housewarming party as Joe was friends with Katy’s brother. “We got talking and ended up going out to meet my brother in town later that night, where I was warned not to kiss him, but of course I did!” laughs Katy. “We ended up exchanging numbers and, thanks to my wonderful brother and seeing how much we liked each other, we had our first date and here we are nearly nine years later!” After romance blossomed, Joe planned an athome proposal for Katy, “I remember the day like it was only yesterday! It was April 2nd and we had just come home from doing the food shopping early on a Sunday morning! I never wanted a grand proposal, so the fact it was in my favourite place with our fur baby there, little cockapoo Benny, it was a dream come true and I immediately said yes!” After setting the big date for the 17th April 2025, it was second time’s a charm for this couple when finding their big-day venue. Katy shares, “We went to view The Boathouse in April ’24, which meant we got a true feel for what the whole setting could potentially look like on the day. Belinda was outstanding, and went through the tour in such detail, she truly is worth her weight in gold! I remember standing in the ceremony room looking REAL WEDDINGS 33
out at the amazing view of the Broads and turning to see my future husband with a massive smile on his face. From that moment I knew this was the venue for us! The Boathouse ticked every box for us and exceed our expectation massively.” The couple wanted to keep the theme classic and timeless, opting for white flowers with plenty of green foliage. “I had an idea of what I wanted and had planned most things myself but, to bring it to life, I must give credit to the wonderful Emily Hardesty! I paid for some planning ‘power hours’ with her and we went through everything and what else I was thinking of. These were super-useful to fully embed what it was I was after and what was truly important to me on the day. Emily ended up offering me on-the-day management for a period of time and this truly was a godsend!” Katy also was super-thankful to Amanda at Timeless Florals. “She knew exactly what I was after and delivered it with an exceptional service from start to finish! Everyone was shocked my flowers were not real and said they were gorgeous! I also bought my bouquet which sits proudly at home in a vase, so I get a reminder of how stunning they were, bringing back memories of our wonderful day!” The couple’s stationery elements were on-theme in a classic design and palette, “Rachael Bull did an amazing job with the stationery. The designs were so classic and sleek, truly fitting the theme for our big day,” says Katy. Always knowing she wanted a plain wedding dress, Katy only had to try on three before finding the one. “I just knew how I felt in it and could sense that my partner would’ve picked the same for me,” adds Katy. Joe and the groomsmen looked dapper in black tuxedos from Pure Suit Hire, complemented by the bridesmaids in black drop-sleeve maxi dresses. “The boys looked incredibly sharp in the classic tuxedo, while the bridesmaids all looked absolutely stunning and, alongside the flowers etc, it looked truly flawless!” A special moment for the couple was hearing the words ‘you are now husband and wife’. “I have never felt more happy in my life than looking into my husband’s eyes and just feeling pure love!” shares Katy. “I also loved all of the speeches. I asked my grandad if he would write something to say at my wedding as he did this for my cousins at their weddings and it was so amazing, but unfortunately, he passed away back in 2019. He wrote something for me and Joe back in April 2018 and it was sealed in an envelope until our big day, I was so proud of my dad being able to read that out on his behalf.” 34

YOUR SEASON FINDING Journalist Dakota Murphey offers seasonal inspiration for a unique wedding reception Whilst a summer wedding is traditionally considered the most popular time to tie the knot, there are many reasons why couples choose other seasons for their celebrations. For many, choosing a date comes down to a mix of budget, venue availability, work schedules and personal preferences. Whether you adore autumn’s vibrant colours, the blossoms of early spring, or heartwarming winter celebrations, each season has unique charms to inspire your wedding plans. From selecting sun-kissed summer cakes and bespoke gifts, to arranging autumnal barn dances or finding local caterers with seasonal produce; this guide helps you host a wedding for all the seasons. TIMING YOUR SPECIAL DAY While June to August is regarded as the peak months of the wedding calendar, couples today prefer to secure a date that works around their busy schedules. In 2023, 25% of couples opted for weddings in March, April, and May and 27% chose September to November. If you love the idea of marrying in autumn or winter, think about which wedding venues suit each season best (prior to booking anything). Ideally, view your desired venue in the season you’ll be booking it for – that way you can get a true feel for the potential vibe on the day. Understanding seasonal nuances allows you to plan a memorable reception! TAPPING INTO EXPERTS WITH SEASONED EXPERIENCE Increasingly, couples planning their weddings are recognising the benefits of professional support; with many turning to wedding planners to help them secure a standout occasion. Their experience managing countless celebrations for happy couples well-equips them to offer guidance through the process – assisting with trending wedding designs, and accommodating a small, large or distinct celebration. Similarly, wedding planners with specific seasonal experience prove invaluable; particularly for fine-tuning every detail, navigating last-minute challenges and contacting local suppliers. Ask about previous weddings they’ve coordinated and be confident describing your vision, however quirky or unusual it seems. For example, Matthew Shaw, founder and creative director at Sauveur, shares his inspiration on embracing the winter season, chuttersnap.com 44
MEET THE EXPERT Website: dakotamurphey.co.uk Email: dakota@dakotamurphey.co.uk saying, “If you are planning a January or February wedding, you will likely also be the first one of the year – which can be very exciting! From the food offering to design and dress code, there’s a lot of fun to be had!” A further source of inspiration can be gained by tapping into your wedding photographer’s wealth of knowledge – who will usually be happy to share insights, showcase portfolios, and suggest photogenic poses at specific locations and times. They can also offer advice on how to capture the essence of a season and the best natural or candid shots during your big day. Wedding photographer Gauthier le Guen, in an MPB interview, highlights how the four seasons contribute to the uniqueness of each occasion: “I also like the fact that each wedding is unique – the reception locations, the decorations and the atmosphere are always changing according to the seasons – so I never get tired of the job.” BALANCING AESTHETICS WITH PRACTICALITIES Weather will always be a major consideration when planning any celebration. Even in the height of summer, in late spring, and September’s elusive ‘Indian Summer’ – there’s no guarantee of blue skies and hours of sunshine. With a wedding planner and photographer on side, your wedding plans will remain a careful balancing act. Whatever the month, you’ll need to take into account weather forecasts, budgets, guest experiences, catering, and table plans to name a few. For instance, remain flexible with indoor-outdoor options if you want a photo booth, a marquee or wanting to stage an incredible firework display. INSPIRING IDEAS FOR THE FOUR SEASONS When you think of spring, renewal and fresh beginnings come to mind – the perfect symbolism for a wedding. You might want to create a theme based on natural colours for wedding favours, flowers, music, food and drink all associated with this time of year. Consider soft pastels for bridal wear; additionally, table decorations featuring tulips or daffodils, and spring colours depict delicate beauty. Summer weddings promise longer days, ample natural light for photography, and elegant outdoor receptions in country gardens. Consider acoustic live music that can transition from daytime celebrations to evening dancing under the stars. Autumn can offer the most spectacular backdrop at weddings with rich burgundy, burnt orange, and deep forest green giving venues a dramatic décor. Venue lighting becomes particularly important – amber uplighting and lots of candles enhance a warm glow befitting the time of year. However, winter weddings possess a magical quality unlike any other season. Transform reception spaces with fairylights, crystal elements, and white florals for an enchanted atmosphere. Venues with fireplaces become particularly coveted, offering both cosy warmth and ambiance. Winter bridal fashion allows for luxurious fabrics like satin and faux fur wraps. Festive catering options will likely feature mulled wine, rich chocolate desserts, and hearty main courses to warm guests. Whichever county you’re looking forward to marrying in, every season brings a diversity of colours, fresh flowers and home-grown produce to make a wedding unique. Whether you envisage a fairytale mid-summer event or an idyllic snowy winter affair, your wedding reception will be an enchanting fusion of that season’s natural beauty and personal style. unsplash.com.@mutecevvil Unsplash.com.@julie_soul unsplash.com.@claitonconto BRIDESMAIDS 45
