Your Devon and Cornwall Wedding - May/June 2025 (Issue 55)

(where Barnaby plays for the Lynton & Lynmouth Cricket Club), Salcombe, Loddiswell, Bantham Beach and, because Barnaby is an Exeter Chiefs rugby fan, we had to have Sandy Park!” Sarah and Barnaby didn’t have centrepieces. “I found an illustrator who we commissioned to draw the stationery,” Sarah says. We chose green ribbons to decorate the place settings and asked our guests to take these home and attach them to a gift for someone they love. We also used seeded paper place cards, so we asked our guests to take these home too and plant them.” Sarah and Barnaby were keen to source their flower varieties as locally as possible. “Pat Cottam grew our flowers in her wonderful Forgotten Garden in Combe Martin and Rachel from the Rose Shed designed all of the church flowers and bouquets as well as the floral ring that was displayed above the bar in the marquee,” Sarah says. “Members of our family and friends helped us to create the small pots of flowers that ran along the full length of the tables which meant our guests could talk to each other over them.” The talented team from Hatch Marquee Hire decorated the marquee with trees that lit up during the evening. “We commissioned a personalised ‘Haywards’ sign to be made that was suspended over where the band played,” Sarah says. “We installed a flag pole and raised a B&S flag in addition to a Devon flag. We also asked the church if we could raise a Devon flag above the tower and they were more than happy to oblige!” Sarah and Barnaby hired the catering company Pickle Shack because they had been to a wedding before and loved their food. “They provided sharing boards for the main course and puddings which we loved,” Sarah explains. “Barnaby doesn’t have a sweet tooth so instead of having a traditional wedding cake, we had a wedding cake of cheese consisting of four different types of cheese and a large pork pie as the base ordered from the South West Cheese Shop in Barnstaple. Fortunately, we forgot to eat it on the wedding day, so it came out on the Sunday for everyone to enjoy!” Sarah and Barnaby borrowed a friend’s small boat which they decorated with small lights and filled with ice to use as the beer and soft drinks bar. “We both love rosé wine so we had some large bottles of Studio Miraval to decorate the bar along with a barrel of local ale on the side,” Sarah says. “For the evening reception, we provided a large Monkey Shoulder whiskey decanter that went down a treat!” LOOKING THE PART Sarah wore a custom Jesus Piero bridal dress (style no 2436). “It was a stunning gown that I accessorised with a handmade personalised veil,” she says. “This featured an S&B logo with our wedding date on and around the edge it included the eight names of our grandparents. I wore a pair of gold Gucci heels and borrowed a pair of pearl drop earrings from a friend. During the evening, I changed into a silk dress from Zara because I wanted something easier to dance in.” Barnaby and his groomsmen wore formal morning dress suits and the groomsmen had different coloured waistcoats with matching ties. “Our beautiful bridesmaids all wore pale dresses and looked stunning,” Sarah says. TIME TO CELEBRATE “We hired a brilliant band called Hand Fulla Soul,” Sarah tells us. “We’d been to another wedding where they had performed and no one left the dancefloor, they were incredible!” “We were due to be driving away from our ceremony in Barnaby’s uncle’s vintage Porsche, but the rain the night before meant the car didn’t start in the morning so we drove away from the church in his parents’ Land Rover Defender with the groomsmen and Barnaby’s parents driving in two traditional Land Rover Defenders in convoy - our guests were none the wiser!” - Sarah 38
