MICHELIN GUIDE ENTRY FOR FLUSHING’S HARBOUR HOUSE Flushing’s Harbour House has entered the prestigious Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland after just five months of trading. Set on the waterfront in the historic village on the South Cornish coast, Harbour House is a pub that is dedicated to creating and achieving new levels of sustainability in the hospitality industry. The Michelin inspectors praised Harbour House saying: “Undoubtedly the most aptly named restaurant in this month’s selection, Harbour House sits just yards from the water. The understated cooking is powered by Cornish produce and the fabulous bread is a great way to start. When visiting such a warm, welcoming and good-looking place as this, it will make you wish that every coastal village had somewhere like it.” Harbour House is owned by Tamara Costin and William Speed who also own the much-acclaimed beachhouse in South Milton Sands and schoolhouse at Mothecombe on the Flete Estate – both in Devon. Both of these establishments also follow a similar upcycling and sustainability-led philosophy and practices. The Harbour House kitchen was opened by Jeffrey Robinson and it has been announced that Andrew Tuck, formerly the acclaimed head chef at the St Kew Inn, has taken the helm as head chef of the establishment. Harbour House will receive either a Michelin star, a Bib Gourmand, a Michelin Plate, or another award, but which one will not be known until the next formal Michelin Guide ceremony. The new pub establishment in Flushing marks a distinct evolution for the historic waterfront property, formerly known as The Seven Stars. Harbour House serves breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as an all-day bar menu with small plates and bar snacks. All sport an array of dishes that showcase the freshest produce from the surrounding sea, rivers, fields and gardens. Key daily suppliers include Soul Food Farm, Sailor’s Creek Seafood, New Dawn Traders, Philip Warren, Footes Pasture Produce, Duchy Game and new independent beef farmer Tresemple. Drinks come from Verdant, Treens, Loveday, Wanderlust Wines, Pocket Full of Stones, St Ives Cider, Find and Foster, Wildling and local Cornish vineyard Trevibban Mill among many others. It contains two bottles of their fine sparkling ciders, Katja and Katja Rosé plus two bars of delicious Willy’s chocolate, all lovingly handmade in Devon. Katja is created from Katy apples that are pressed and fermented cool with white wine yeast to enhance their fresh and fragrant apple characteristics. The result is an elegant sparkling wine-like drink and a fabulous British alternative to prosecco. Katja Rosé is created using the same method but the skins of Rondo grapes are added during the fermentation process to give it a beautiful blush colour. The result is a sparkling cider which tastes of sun-ripened cherries and peaches with notes of apple blossom and candyfloss, balanced with tannins from the wineskins. Chris Eden commented, “We’ve had a great year at Gidleigh Park and we are all delighted to have retained our Michelin star. I’m continually proud to head up Gidleigh Park’s kitchen and to work with such a brilliant team. We’re incredibly lucky that each day we get to showcase the beautiful produce we have in the West Country, and I’m delighted that the great feedback we’ve received from guests this year has been followed by this news tonight.” Simon Franks, regional general manager of Andrew Brownsword Hotels commented, “Chris works pure magic in the kitchen and the delight his menus continually deliver to our guests is a testament to his skill, and his leadership of such a talented team. The waterfalls themselves descend more than 70 metres through ferns and woods. At the base of the falls, the woodland gives way to meadows and lakes, making this one of the most spectacular venue settings in Devon. It has a large barn door opening to the lake, another door opening to the side and a smaller set of doors next to the hard standing, where the caterers can set up with vehicle access. Ceremonies take place in The Pagoda, a Victorian structure that’s situated on a large jetty overlooking the lake providing an inspirational setting. The jetty can seat up to 85 guests, and with overflow on to the grass, it can accommodate up to 120 loved ones. The indoor ceremony option is inside the barn seating between 10 and 150 people. For an intimate, standing-only ceremony of up to 30 guests, with the waterfall as the backdrop, there’s the romantic Clampett Falls, a five-minute walk from the barn. The wedding breakfast and reception are hosted inside the barn for up to 150 guests seated. This number can be extended to 180 loved ones for the reception within the barn and up to 250 people when using a marquee to provide extra space. The area can also be sectioned off to create a more intimate atmosphere. The site offers accommodation in a stunning cottage that sleeps up to eight guests for a minimum of three nights. This cottage is spacious but cosy with four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a large eat-in kitchen, and a comfortable living area with TV and Wi-Fi, plus there’s a 5% discount for wedding clients. Fringed on one side by woodland, there’s a sandstone terrace in front furnished with pub-style wooden picnic tables perfect for drinks and nibbles. In front is the stretch tent which is used for shade on sunny days or as shelter from the elements if the weather is looking uncertain. It’s also often used for speeches and reception drinks and the entire area nestles perfectly with views of the Devon meadows in front and the orchard to the other side. The rustic barn has been painted in neutral colours to suit any wedding theme and enjoys gorgeous countryside views through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Furnished with banquet-style rustic tables that can be set up in several ways for a wedding feast, it is also used for live bands, dance parties and late-night munchies. Couples can choose either the secluded silver birch ‘church’ (located a one-minute walk from the main party barn) or the hilltop willow ‘cathedral’ (situated closer to the barn). A Devonshire day Jojo and Kane’s special day at Cadhay in Ottery St Mary was decorated with a rich burgundy colour palette Images courtesy of Louise Richey Photography Jojo and Kane Herbert married on the 10th of June 2023 at Talaton church followed by a reception at Cadhay in Ottery St Mary, Devon. 26

Jojo and Kane met at work. “We clicked instantly and found that spending time together felt very easy,” Jojo tells us. “We quickly realised that we shared the same sense of humour and grew very close.” Kane proposed at one of the couple’s favourite spots on East Hill overlooking Sidmouth in Devon. “It was during a dog walk and although we’d always spoken about getting married, it was a wonderful surprise,” Jojo says. SETTING THE SCENE Kane grew up in Ottery St Mary and remembers Cadhay as a magical place from his childhood so it seemed an obvious choice for the couple’s reception. “I fell in love with the venue when we first visited,” Jojo tells us. “We chose Talaton church to get married in because Kane’s grandma, Dyllis, spent her life living in Talaton so he has many fond memories of spending time in the village. One of the key parts of the day was exchanging our vows in front of those closest to us.” “My dad, Roger, was keen for me to arrive at the church in an old Land Rover like the one I learned to drive in,” Jojo explains. “He and his wife Tania were able to borrow an old 27 REAL WEDDINGS
