Your Devon and Cornwall Wedding - November/December 2020 (Issue 28)

PENGERSICK CASTLE, PENZANCE, CORNWALL This magical castle steeped in history sits in formal Tudor grounds home to a Knot and Medieval garden. Inside, it boasts beamed ceilings, ornately carved granite fireplaces and a fine Tudor stone spiral staircase for those wishing to make a grand entrance. The main entrance features an arched doorway with a built-in drop- slot that makes an Insta-worthy backdrop. Guests can enjoy the four acres of woodland that looks idyllic in the winter months, with grassy pathways leading to the original Medieval manor house site that’s now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The castle is best suited to intimate affairs and is also ideal for hosting micro weddings of up to 15 loved ones, and elopement celebrations (it’s now a Covid 19-secure venue that follows all of the Government guidelines and allows couples to amend dates at no charge). Every room inside the building is licensed for a ceremony, including The Gun Room situated on the ground floor, one of the most important areas in the castle (where private dining can also be enjoyed). Another ceremony option is The Solar located on the first floor that enjoys views across the beautifully manicured gardens. Flooded with natural light and an open-plan design, it can be styled for any theme. The Drawing Room situated on the second floor with its impressive stone fireplace is an excellent location for a small drinks reception while The Medieval Bower tucked away in the Medieval garden is an outdoor option. It reflects the style and grandeur of the area and is packed full of charm, with original features and antiques, plus 31 individually styled bedrooms including indulgent four-poster rooms and an elegant bridal suite. One of the hotel’s best-kept secrets is its ancient Walled Garden, often referred to as The Secret Garden, with its manicured lawn, formal borders and a herb garden used by the hotel’s chefs. Ceremonies take place in the elegant wood-panelled Woburn Room while receptions are hosted in the Gallery 26 function suite, a bright and contemporary space at the heart of the hotel.
