Katy and Oliver met as students working in the local social club bar. They soon became friends and two years later their relationship blossomed into a beautiful romance! While on holiday in Placa De Catalunya, Barcelona, on one knee pretending to snap a photo of Katy, Oliver pulled the engagement ring out of his bag. “Hold on I just need to ask you something,” he said to a completely taken aback Katy. He asked her to marry him, and she was so shocked she didn’t answer at first! It took a repeat of the question for her to accept. “Our 10year anniversary was later in the year, so Katy was expecting me to propose then,” Oliver explains. As a child, Oliver was a chorister at Liverpool Cathedral and believed it would be the perfect place to marry. “We both wanted a religious ceremony and an iconic Liverpool landmark, so the Cathedral really was our dream venue,” Oliver shares. For their ensuing celebrations, the couple chose The Racquet Club since they were looking for a central location. “We loved the size of the venue, and the fact it was also a hotel, so our bridal party could stay the night of the wedding,” Oliver explains. “It was lovely to wake up the next day and all have a breakfast together and reflect on our wedding the day before.” Join us as the groom, Oliver, shares his happy memories of the big day... SETTING THE SCENE With three sets of parents between them, Katy and Oliver opted to have all six plus themselves seated at the top table to ensure everyone was included. They then had further tables set up for family and friends so that everyone was sitting with people they knew. “Luckily, as we’ve been together for 10 years, most people during the daytime knew each other already,” Oliver says. The venue offered candelabras as centrepieces, so the couple used a selection of these alongside their short table dressings, and taller flower arrangements on stands for the other tables. Vases containing candles were placed along the windowsills. One of Oliver’s mum’s close friends is a florist, and the couple knew her well, so they gave her creative control over the flowers. She visited the venue with them a few times before the big day and they also went to her studio together to work on their vision. “She knew the colour palette and that we wanted dried flowers to keep,” Oliver says. “Other than that, she worked her magic and made the bouquets and venue styling look amazing!” The couple chose dried flowers with burnt orange and dark forest green to complement their theme and give the day an autumnal vibe. Originally, the couple decided to forego a wedding cake. “I don’t really have a sweet tooth, and we didn’t want the fuss of a traditional cake cutting with everyone gathered around us,” Oliver explains. However, their florist suggested getting a simple two-tiered naked cake that she could decorate with dried flowers to match the room. “We went with this idea as we thought it would be nice to have one in the end, but it was a last-minute decision,” Oliver shares. They bought a personalised Mr and Mrs Hayden cake topper from Etsy, which they held onto as a keepsake. Since the groom is a big film fan and studied media at university, as soon as they started planning the wedding, he said he’d like a movie theme for their tablescapes. So, they chose some of their silver-screen favourites for the place names, which were displayed on old cinema style stands. For example, Screen One – A Princess Bride. Each guest’s place name was then an old-fashioned cinema ticket bearing their names. “As our venue had a historical gentlemen’s club style, we thought this all fitted REAL WEDDINGS 19

very well,” Oliver says. A Cadillac and a Bentley delivered the couple to their venue in the morning, and they later travelled from Cathedral to Racquet Club in the Bentley following the “I dos.” The guests followed in a vintage double decker bus, which they very much enjoyed. The couple opted to have canapés served on arrival, followed by a seated, three-course wedding breakfast. They decided against an evening buffet as they were concerned about whether their daytime guests would want to eat having dined so decadently earlier in the day. So, they opted for small plates to go around in the evening. LOOKING THE PART Oliver wore a three-piece, forest green suit from The Wedding House in Liverpool, close to the city centre. He accessorised with a patterned burnt orange and navy tie, and pocket square. To differentiate themselves from the groom, the groomsmen wore grey three-piece suits with waistcoats to match the colour of the Oliver’s suit, along with solid burnt orange ties. Katy wore a long sleeved, fitted lace gown and accessorised with a cathedral-length veil pinned into her up do. Her two bridesmaids wore burnt orange dresses in different styles, both floor-length with a leg slit. “The girls loved not feeling too formal and being able to show off their leg tattoos!” Oliver says. TIME TO CELEBRATE “We knew we wanted live entertainment throughout the day and we love a good party, so also wanted a late bar and DJ,” Oliver explains. The couple found a supplier who offered the whole package, which made life easy. A guitarist performed during the wedding breakfast, before a saxophonist took over during the arrival drinks and evening. The DJ then kept the dancefloor full through to the end. “It was perfect having a mix of the three types of music and the saxophonist during the evening was a massive hit, as she came onto the dancefloor with the guests and got really involved,” Oliver shares. “Having the 1am bar and DJ was also great as we didn’t want the night to end!” MEMORABLE MOMENTS “In the morning, I felt nervous and just couldn’t wait for the car to arrive and take me to the venue,” Oliver shares. “After Katy arrived though, I felt fantastic and had the most amazing day. Katy didn’t feel nervous at all. She arrived and looked absolutely amazing and left that night looking exactly the same way!” GETTING AWAY FROM IT ALL The couple booked a honeymoon package with Kuoni and headed off to Singapore and Thailand. They waited until January, since they understood the best time to visit was December to April, rather than October when they tied the knot. Straight after the big day, they enjoyed a two-night spa break at Carden Park. “It was lovely to have a few days, just us, after the wedding, with the excitement of the honeymoon still to come.” When they booked with Kuoni they were able to set up a honeymoon page where their guests could contribute to it as a wedding gift. The link was included in the daytime wedding invitations. GROOM’S TOP TIP “Wedding planning can be stressful, but try not to worry about it,” Oliver says. “No matter what you’re worrying about, everything will fall into place. My best tip for the day is to enjoy it. You only do it once in a lifetime!” 21 REAL WEDDINGS

Emma and Daniel styled their al fresco celebrations in a vibrant palette of bold hues Images courtesy of Natalie Jayne Photography THE FUTURE is bright Emma and Daniel met at Imperial College London, where they’d both signed up to do a charity climb of Mount Kilimanjaro. They got to know each other during the climb and subsequent safari and on return kept bumping into each other. It was almost as if the universe was trying to bring them together! They hit it off from there, having fallen for each other’s sense of humour and light-hearted outlook on life. Dan proposed while the couple were on holiday in California. During a hike in Sequoia National Park, they stopped for some lunch by a waterfall. Dan was using his drone to take some photos, while Emma ate her sandwiches on a rock. She didn’t have any reason to suspect anything out of the ordinary, until he tapped her on the shoulder and she turned to find him on one knee. He’d been setting up the drone to capture the whole thing on video. The main attraction for the couple when it came to Swanley Meadows was that it was all outdoors and local to Emma’s family farm. “We’d been looking at marquee weddings, but as soon as we found the tipis, we knew they were much more us,” the bride explains. “They’re really impressive structures and look beautiful, set in a big green field with lots of tress and lush vibrant countryside surroundings.” So, the date was set for 22nd June 2024. Join us as we take a peek into the couple’s gorgeous wedding album, sure to inspire if you’re planning your own al fresco affair... 25 REAL WEDDINGS
Dan wore a green three-piece suit from a Bristol suit supplier. His pocket square, tie and waistcoat were lined with a matching Liberty fabric – a floral design containing the same colours as the flowers and bridesmaids’ dresses. He also wore a pocket watch and shoes from John Lobb. The groomsmen wore beige suits with the same floral pocket square as the groom. I wore Sorrento by Cardiff designer Amy Mair, which I found at 130 Atelier in Congleton. I loved the look of a slip dress underneath something more sheer and floaty. I wanted to look elegant, timeless and a little ethereal. I accessorised with pearl and gold earrings and a gold charm bracelet, which belonged to my great grandmother. I also had blue heels as my something blue. We chose a bright colour palette of yellow, orange, red and pink. The bridesmaids wore a variety of colours from our palette. Each chose their dress themselves, as I was keen for them to be able to wear them again. 26
Our centrepieces were an eclectic mix of jars and vases to complement our rustic feel. We decorated the interior of the tipis with lots of bunting handmade by Dan’s auntie to match our palette. Our wedding flowers were grown on a local farm. We had a variety of outdoor games, including limbo, giant Jenga, and throwing games. 27 REAL WEDDINGS
