Rebecca says: The first thing you need to ask yourself is: “what’s my skin type?” If you have large pores and extra shine throughout the day, it’s likely you have oily skin. In which case, you should look for something oil-free with good staying power. For mature skin, I’d always say less is more, so keep it to a light coverage of something with a luxurious glow for that youthful appearance. If you have dry or dehydrated skin, you may find yourself getting patchy as the day wears on and your foundation eats up moisture. Your skin would love a base with extra built-in hydration. Avoid powder foundations and anything matte. If your skin is normal to combination, consider how you want it to look – matte, dewy or satin. Also, think about how much foundation you want to see on your skin and whether you have any certain areas of concern. Perhaps you struggle with skin irritation and feel you need a foundation with good coverage. Be sure to choose something natural and organic – be kind to your skin and let it breathe. Choosing a foundation can also come down to your environment. For example, do you work indoors or outdoors? SPF is a must, whether it be in your foundation or moisturiser. Furthermore, a seasonal change in foundation texture may suit you through winter and summer. Try to pick the right shade in natural light, and take a sample home before you commit to buying it. See how it works with your other make up products, then you’ll know if it’s the one for you. STAYING POWER I have particularly oily skin. How can I best prepare it so that my make-up stays on all day without looking shiny? Jessica says: The best way to ensure your make-up lasts all day without it getting too shiny is all in the prep. I’d advise you to get a good skincare routine going in the run up to your wedding, one that’s suitable for your skin type. Then, on the day carry out your usual skincare routine and before make-up application apply a primer, which will prevent shine in the areas it’s needed. Even with skincare and primer, really oily skin may still shine slightly, so my top tip would be to purchase a little powder compact and apply lightly throughout the day when needed.
