Your Cheshire and Merseyside Wedding - July/August 2020 (Issue 52)

70 Local professionals offer advice on looking your big-day best 40 AND fabulous I’m getting married at 40 and have a few fine lines and wrinkles. How can I best conceal these on my wedding day without looking caked in make-up? Sophie says: Mature skin has a tendency to be dry, so regular exfoliation, combined with a good quality cleanser, toner, moisturiser and the use of hyaluronic acid to hydrate and plump the skin is the way forward. I’d highly recommend using products that feed the skin, so that make-up looks natural. A primer is essential to keep your foundation in place all day. My favourite product for clients with open pores is benefit’s Porefessional Face Primer – it has a lovely tint and creates a smooth base. I also love Charlotte Tilbury’s Wonderglow Primer for highlighting areas of the face for added radiance. To mattify, I recommend Avene Cleanance MAT Mattifying Emulsion, which has a light oil-free texture rich in powders creating a bare-skin effect. Choose a lightweight foundation with a high-quality pigment, anything heavy will accentuate any fine lines and wrinkles. The one I love to use is Dior Backstage Face and Body Foundation, as it has a lovely watercolour quality. Remember, the application process is just as important as the product itself: using a soft buffer brush, allow it to smooth out your skin instead of setting into fine lines. Lipstick feathering or bleeding can also be a challenge due to small wrinkles around the mouth area. So, before applying lip products, I’d advise using foundation or concealer around the mouth area to provide a barrier. Using a lipliner and applying a very light layer of powder can also help to combat this. Finally, the skin is especially thin and delicate around the eyes, so avoid using any products that are too light reflective and heavy. Plus, powder eyeshadows work well as shiny, glittery shadows can magnify any imperfections and creases. To create a youthful open-eyed appearance on hooded eyes, take a neutral matte colour high above the crease of the eyelid. Do you have any tips? Evka says: Of course, false lashes aren’t easy to apply on your own. There are a few solutions though… First you need to make sure you’re not allergic to the latex glue, and if so, use a non-latex glue. If you’re using a professional make-up artist on the day, you can always ask for the lashes to be applied at the trial, so you can see if you actually do like them and if your eyes are ok with them too. The make-up artist will always have different sizes and will choose accordingly to the style and size of your eyes. However, if you’re doing your own make-up, I’d still advise that you make an appointment with a professional to show you how to choose and trim the lashes to your eye size, check which glue to use and how to apply the lashes correctly. You can also try the individual lashes that last a few weeks. These are done at professional beauty salons and will be tailored to the look you’d like. To avoid any swelling, bad reaction on the big day, or simply you might not like it, please do try any of these weeks before the wedding, so you have time for any treatment if needed.
