She can perform as guests gather for the ceremony, followed by a couple of entrance pieces. “This is unique to each wedding, depending on whether both halves of the couple want to make an entrance, how many are in the bridal party and whether there is a long walk to get to the registrar,” she tells us. Alison can also play during the drinks reception and the wedding breakfast, and sometimes she is requested to perform for those parts and not the ceremony. “In the last few years, several couples have asked me to play their first dance track, before the DJ or band,” she says. “As a singer and harpist, I can sing all or some of the music, or do everything instrumentally – the couples get to choose the music played. I created a database called The Harpinator, where each couple has their own private portal on my website and selects their music choices. Requests this year include Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper, the Pokémon theme and Modern Love by John Lunn.” Alison enjoys dressing up to fit with the wedding theme, whether it’s a gothic look or a viking vibe. “With Halloween and Christmas coming up, I will be busy playing music from the films Corpse Bride and The Nightmare Before Christmas,” she says. When it comes to advising newly engaged couples about booking their big-day music, Alison advises them to talk about what they do and don’t like. “At wedding shows, I ask visitors what their favourite music is, so get prepared for that question. You may want to ask this question of your loved ones, too.” facebook.com/WeddingHarpSong instagram.com/aelvenharp Your wedding, your music, your choice
