GEORGE CLARKE OPENS RESTORED GATEHOUSE AT ST OSYTH PRIORY Renowned architect and TV presenter George Clarke has officially opened an historic landmark which has been a crucial element of decades of careful restoration work. The priory, in the village of St Osyth, dates back to the 12th century when it was founded as a house for Augustinian canons and is considered to be one of the East of England’s finest heritage sites. The priory’s imposing Gatehouse, which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade I listed building, dates to 1481 and is one of the finest examples, in Britain, of the use of flint flushwork. Following careful restoration, the Gatehouse has now become part of the priory’s reincarnation as a beautiful wedding venue. The Gatehouse is one of 16 listed buildings at the priory which have been lovingly restored by the Sargeant family who bought the estate in 1999. HEDINGHAM CASTLE 01787 460 261 | www.hedinghamcastle.co.uk Hedingham Castle is set within 160 acres of stunning Essex countryside including the beautifully restored gardens in the immediate area below the Castle – the perfect backdrop for wedding photography. Our favourite spot is the lake, with the Castle behind, or in between the huge Wellingtonia trees at the bottom of the formal pond. The history of Hedingham spans almost a millennium, with the Castle almost 900 years old. Its imposing Norman architecture is iconic and the Castle is a landmark in its own right and can be seen for miles around, standing at over 70ft tall. The majestic Castle is arguably the best preserved Norman Keep of its kind in the country, both inside and out. Celebrate in style All ceremonies take place in the Banqueting Hall within the Castle, with its breathtaking atmosphere and impressive double height arch. The room is lit with candles and two grand chandeliers to give the space the most incredible romance. The acoustics are superb and many choose to have a string quartet play as the bride walks down the aisle. Receptions can take place in either the elegant Ballroom Marquee, which is a permanent structure adjoining the Mansion House and includes drinks in the Hall of the House and lakeside lawn before dinner. Or, for smaller weddings, you can hold your entire day in the Castle, dining in the Tapestry Room and then continuing the party on the floor above with drinks and dancing. Hedingham Castle is now offering the option of Twilight weddings. We love... The world is your oyster Alison and Jack Grogan married at Colchester Oyster Fishery, the first wedding to ever take place there! Images courtesy of Chris Bradshaw Photography 29 REAL WEDDINGS
As cheesy as it sounds, it was honestly love at first sight.” remembers Alison. “We met at my local yacht club, and it felt like something out of a movie. Jack was a professional sailor at the time, competing with his dad, and they were there for a sailing competition. We locked eyes from across the room, and I’ll never forget the moment he came over to buy a drink. After my shift, he asked if I wanted to join him and his friends at the next pub. Of course, I said yes, and the night was full of amazing conversations. Fast forward 10 years, and here we are—married, with our first baby on the way!” The pair said their ‘I dos’ at Colchester Oyster Fishery on 21st September 2024. Here, Alison tells us more about their day... Alison had always dreamed of an outdoor wedding, ideally near the sea. With both Alison and Jack having such a deep connection to sailing and the ocean, it was a must to have that at the heart of their wedding. Alison tells us more, “We’d walked around Mersea Island a few times, and when we found out the Colchester Oyster Fishery had just undergone a huge renovation, including a beautiful balcony overlooking the river, we had to check it out. Not knowing if they even hosted events, we boldly asked if they’d ever considered being a wedding venue. To our absolute delight, they said, yes! Jack and I became the first couple ever to get married there, and we couldn’t have been more thrilled.” SETTING THE SCENE Food was a major focus for foodies, Alison and Jack, and they knew exactly what they wanted, lobster and skinny fries! Dominic Catering served up quite the feast, serving lobster, mouthwatering steak, fries, and fresh salads. For dessert, espresso martini tiramisus, which were a perfect nod to Jack’s signature boozy espresso martinis. “ 30
DRESSED TO IMPRESS Alison wore a low-back, fitted dress by Australian brand, Made with Love, purchased through Perla Nova. Alison tells us, “I never really knew what I wanted, but I knew I wanted something simple and elegant. When I tried this dress on, I immediately felt like it was the one. The soft, buttery material hugged my figure perfectly, and I felt incredible in it. I accessorized with simple pearl earrings, which fitted our oyster-themed venue.” Jack wanted something simple, too. He wore navy chinos with a crisp white shirt and a stylish blazer from Reiss that gave off a relaxed, Mediterranean vibe. The bridesmaids were Alison’s ‘something blue’ and totally looked the part. TIME TO CELEBRATE Alison and Jack were determined to throw the most unforgettable party, so entertainment was key! Alison adds, “I found a DJ who performed with a saxophonist and drummer, and they absolutely made the night. The energy was incredible—the dance floor was packed from start to finish, and we partied until the early hours. It was the wildest night, and everyone had the best time.” MEMORABLE MOMENTS “The reception drinks overlooking the water were unforgettable, as was the incredible food. Dancing until our feet hurt was a blast, but the most magical moment was when Jack and I took a quiet moment to look over the venue, seeing all our friends and family celebrating with us. It was so overwhelming and special— everyone was there for us, and we’ll never forget it.” REAL WEDDINGS 31

Stetsons and sundowners set the scene for Hannah and Ben’s amazing western-themed wedding! Images courtesy of The Bearded Photographers The ultimate hoedown Hannah and Ben met at the car garage where Ben worked. It was following a car accident Hannah’s dad was in, the car was a wreck but thankfully Dad walked away unscathed. Fast forward a year, Hannah returns to the garage with her own car and Ben is there. Hannah explains, “I left the car with him and when I returned to collect it, I took homemade mince pies to say thank you which he exchanged for his mum’s homemade brownies, and we spent about an hour chatting... I went back to my parents and me and my dad decided to go to a garden centre to get some more Christmas lights for the front of the house. Whilst there, I received a text that made my heart skip a beat, Ben asked me if I’d like to go to a Christmas jumper party with him that night. I agreed! After four outfit changes, numerous make-up touch-ups and hair styles there was a knock at the door, mum answered. I came running down the stairs and the first time my mum ever saw Ben he was standing at our front door in a pair of cowboy boots, Santa shorts and …Yep, you guessed it, nothing else. “We got to the party and it was hosted by Ben’s cousin and wife. I was so nervous. I knew nobody apart from Ben and I think he could sense how nervous I was, so we stayed together the entire time. I don’t think either of us wanted the night to end but unfortunately, it did. The next morning, I woke up hoping there would be a text from him and there was and from that day onwards I don’t think we’ve gone a day without a text being sent to each other or seeing each other. That was 10 years ago.” Hannah King married Ben Turner in front of family and friends on 6th September 2024 in their meadow in Finchingfield. Here, they share some of their favourite moments from the big day... REAL WEDDINGS 35
We had quite a few loved ones who meant the world to us but sadly passed before our wedding so on the very front row of hay bales, we had their pictures watching us get married. We held our wedding in our meadow in Finchingfield. We had 30 day guests and an additional 30 evening guests. Ben wore Circle G cowboy boots, Ariat Jeans, buckle belt, brown silk waistcoat, white shirt, and of course a cowboy hat. Our dads (Phill & Colin) and us built everything on our vision board - from huge freestanding saloon doors, a piano whiskey bar, pallet tables, photo wall, a bridge, our western style bar, garden games and more. Our vision was clear from the start. We wanted to bring some western to the UK, it was like stepping into a movie set! I wore, Tala by Evie Young, from Abigail’s Collection, Colchester. I had the most magical experience with Charlotte, she was the most amazing hype girl, I wouldn’t have wanted to do that with anyone else. 36
When we started planning our wedding, we sat down with our parents and asked them not to give any money towards our wedding we wanted to pay for the entire wedding ourselves and be debt free on the day (which we did manage and we’re so proud of!). Instead, our parents are extremely talented and we asked for their help to bring our vision to life. The real showstopper came with the father of the bride speech and after a moving speech we were presented with a beautifully wrapped giftbox. We had no idea what was going to be inside! We opened the ribbon with guests hanging in anticipation, looked inside and sobbed – they’d booked our dream honeymoon, a trip around Texas and Nashville. We cried, our guests cried, our suppliers cried – it was an emotional moment! After our ceremony we had huge garden games we’d built, our country music DJ, Johnny Rattlesnake spinning some records and the bucks fizz was flowing. I arrived to the ceremony in the buck of my dad’s Chevy truck and my mum and maid of honour arrived in our Plymouth Satellite which were then parked at the top of the aisle. We had an amazing BBQ buffet style meal catered for by Valentine Cuisine whilst our very talented country music band (Danny McMahon) played for us acoustically throughout our meal. We had a hand tying ceremony which was very emotional, this started with an Apache wedding blessing (famous American blessing). 37 REAL WEDDINGS
Danny McMahon band played throughout the evening and our evening food of stone baked pizzas was served. This is your one day where every single person you love and hold close are all in the same room, this may be the only opportunity you have for this to ever happen again - let that sink in, make it special and remember every moment. All our guests absolutely loved what we had achieved in bringing the west to the UK, so we’ve now set up our own company The Western Wedding Co where we hire out all our décor to couples wanting to create that western feel on their special day. 38
