Al fresco vibes Summer festival, English country garden, tea party... al fresco wedding styling possibilities are fun, frivolous and practically endless. £14.95, rexlondon.com wayfair.co.uk £28, rockettstgeorge.co.uk £12.95, rexlondon.com £49.95, sparkle.lighting The warmer weather is finally starting to arrive, which always makes our thoughts turn to outdoor weddings. We absolutely love the al fresco vibe, but the planning isn’t without its complications. There’s a lot to think about from ‘the where,’ to ‘the how.’ Then there’s the to-do list: do you need toilets? Lighting? Seating? Generators? Permits? And the age-old question, of course: What if it rains? Is it really worth it? The short answer, we believe, is yes! If you’re the sort of person who adores a spreadsheet, this will be a breeze; and if you’re not, well, that’s what wedding planners are for. Don’t compromise on your dreams because things might get a little bit tricky. That said, if the thought still leaves your knees knocking, there’s another answer. Simply look for a venue with oodles of outdoor space. Check if it offers outdoor ceremonies, al fresco drink receptions, and access to the grounds all day, and you’re laughing. All of the open-air joy and none of the hassle – your venue team have totally got this. I hope you love this issue; our first foray into summer for 2026. Enjoy and as ever... keeeep planning! Ice, ice baby Bradley’s Jewellers York is celebrating a successful start to the year, thanks to the annual York Ice Trail. The retailer’s larger-than-life ice sculpture, which wowed crowds on Low Petergate, took the form of a White Rose of Yorkshire and drew inspiration for its incredible design from the business’ popular York Rose collection of fine jewellery. The jeweller has participated in the event for more than a decade and the decision to theme this year’s ice sculpture around the York Rose collection stemmed from the range’s success over the past 12 months, specifically the newest additions: the York Rose signet ring, the York Rose Bronte ring, and the unique York Rose Tiara. As part of the York Ice Trail 2026, customers were invited to see the York Rose Tiara by private viewing. Hundreds of guests gathered to witness this precious piece of Yorkshire history, which has now been returned to the retailer’s archives for safekeeping. A REVAMP FOR RURAL WEDDING VENUE A Yorkshire couple have restored the magic and romance to a timeless rural wedding venue with the support of the British Business Bank’s Start Up Loans Programme. Birdforth Hall is a charming estate with more than 350 years of history, nestled between Thirsk and York. But when Paul and Sue Sadler took over the property, its holiday cottages and leisure complex were in need of extensive refurbishment. Initially, the four large barn conversions were revamped throughout, with modern appliances, smart new décor, and hot tubs in individual garden areas. Next, a redundant barn was converted into a smart, fully licensed wedding venue space. The refurb has already proven popular for wedding weekends. This is when the couple turned to the Business Enterprise Fund to support the next stage of their journey. With the area now covered, the sun terrace has a 15-metre sliding glass door, which opens onto the rear lawned area, ideal for outdoor weddings even when the weather isn’t kind. Now, the venue has bookings into 2028, and Birdforth Hall is steadily growing a reputation for relaxed country weddings. Find out more at birdforthhallholidaycottages.co.uk Avoid costly wedding surprises While wedding planning excitement is high, wedding experts warn that many couples only realise certain crucial details after they’ve booked their venue, often leading to unexpected costs, stress and last-minute compromises. Imogen D’Cruz, wedding coordinator at The Milner York, has revealed the most common things couples say they wish they’d known before committing to their dream wedding venue, offering timely advice for those still finalising plans, which you can read over on our website news pages at www.youryorkshire.wedding/news The biggest pitfall to avoid is not assuming everything comes with the venue. “Items like tables, chairs, linens or even glassware aren’t always included in the venue hire, even at beautiful high-end spaces,” Imogen explains. “Knowing exactly what’s included, and what’s an extra, helps to avoid budget shocks later down the line.” Don’t miss the full story over on our news pages and find out more about the venue at themilneryork.com Danida, Rolling in Roses (L-R) Sue and Paul Sadler Trendsetters Yorkshire brand Rolling in Roses recently hosted its 2026 press presentation, exclusively unveiling new, unreleased styles. Beyond the gowns, it also offered the opportunity to gain insights into the trends that the brand has observed from its 2026 bridal appointments, and we’re here to share them! The Beatrice dress has been the bestseller year-to-date, as well as the brand’s more structured silhouettes, like Juliet and Titania, which boast beautiful bodices and basque waists. There has also been an increasing pull towards low-back cuts in all styles and sizes – something brand founder and designer Hayley Neil attributes to all the incredible ‘invisible’ underwear options available these days that remove the support limitations that backless cuts place on fuller-busted women. The new collection, Sinners, will launch in June, and is inspired by forms of sculpture throughout the ages, manipulating fabric to echo folds of sculpted marble. RESILIENCE Love and Libby and Danny’s wedding day was an intimate and deeply personal occasion shared with just 10 of their nearest and dearest Images courtesy of Nicole Wilcox Photography Libby and Danny first encountered each other on social media where Danny messaged to ask her out. She completely ignored him! A few weeks later, as though fate had something to say about that, the two matched on a dating app and his opening message was simply: “You again!” This time, Libby agreed to a date, and the rest is history. “It’s funny to think how close we came to never meeting properly, but everything fell into place exactly as it was meant to,” Libby says. Danny proposed in a stunning cliffside restaurant in Menorca at sunset. “It was intimate, magical and exactly what I’d dreamed of,” Libby shares. Danny had designed the ring himself, and it was lovingly crafted by Libby’s godfather, who is a jeweller, making it even more personal. The couple’s original plan was to marry in Sorrento, but when Libby’s dad was diagnosed with leukaemia for the second time, everything changed. The wedding was put on hold as the family focused on his treatment. In February 2025, Libby’s mum discovered Kirkby Fleetham Hall on social media – “The intimate, breathtaking venue felt instantly right,” Libby remembers. After consulting her father’s medical team, who kindly allowed him a short pause in treatment, the couple quietly booked the venue and invited just 10 of their closest friends and family members. With only five months to plan, Libby’s mum took the reins, organising everything from flowers and table décor to designing the bride’s bespoke wedding dress and daughter Emelia’s bridesmaid gown. She chose a colour palette of soft apricot tones that complemented the house and grounds. Every detail was infused with love and creativity, making the day both beautiful and deeply personal. With only a few months to find a dress, most boutiques told Libby they couldn’t help, but she knew exactly what she wanted and Bridesmaid by JB created a bespoke gown for her. “The result was flawless,” she shares. “It fit beautifully, reflected my vision, and made me feel confident and radiant.” Danny, meanwhile, looked effortlessly stylish in a sleek Hugo Boss suit, in keeping with the elegant, intimate feel of the day. Emelia looked gorgeous in her Aperol Spritz-shade dress – a subtle nod to the couple’s original Italian plans. With the wedding taking place on a hot July day, it was the perfect opportunity to enjoy Pimm’s on the lawn post-ceremony, along with delicious canapés, as well as Libby’s favourite rosé, Whispering Angel, which complemented the table styling wonderfully. The wedding breakfast starter was Provencal roast vegetable bruschetta with mozzarella, pancetta and rocket mayonnaise. This was followed by a main course of rosemary roast rump of lamb or fillet of sea bass stuffed with fresh garden herbs and lemon. Dessert was a raspberry bavarois with gingerbread ice cream, lemon curd and gingerbread crumb – the perfect sweet ending to their first meal together as husband and wife. Emma, the couple’s violinist, added a magical atmosphere to the day. “With just 12 of us, we didn’t need any extra entertainment; the setting, the music, and simply being together created an intimate, relaxed and joyful experience,” Libby tells us. The vision for their three-day wedding retreat was ultimately about love and resilience, focused not on grandeur but on togetherness. “What began as a very different dream became something far more meaningful: an intimate gathering filled with warmth, gratitude and precious time together,” Libby concludes. Love is... Paul and Duncan’s big day was a true celebration of love, diversity and inclusivity Images courtesy of Paxton Photography REAL WEDDINGS 25

Paul and Duncan had known each other for many years, but it wasn’t until November 2022 when Paul hosted a staff awards party at Duncan’s bar that they noticed a spark between them. Paul proposed at midnight during the bar’s annual New Year’s Eve party a year later. “We chose York Racecourse as our venue for a number of reasons,” Paul explains. “I’d been part of the venue as a staffing partner for more than five years, so it felt like a second home to me, and I knew the team well, so was confident they’d deliver a magical day for us.” What’s more, it offered them the opportunity to accommodate 200 daytime guests and host an evening event for 350, so it was ideal. “At the racecourse, I manage hundreds of staff having a people-first staffing business, while Duncan runs a people-friendly bar in Leeds that offers a safe space for the local community, so the racecourse was the perfect fit for us, in keeping with our values of diversity, inclusion and community,” Paul continues. With the date set for September, the couple opted for an autumnal theme and collaborated with venue stylist Lesley to bring it to life. “She was just outstanding,” Paul tells us. “She encompassed our vision and theme, from beautiful wooden centrepieces, autumnal trees and leaves to the gorgeous chair sashes.” Lesley also created an autumnal wonderland for their al fresco ceremony space, leading through to the Theakston Bar, and the wedding breakfast room, which was beautifully laid out for 200 guests with the racetrack as their backdrop. Paul chose a classic black suit accessorised with an orange floral tie, handkerchief and a stunning orange blossom buttonhole. Duncan meanwhile, wore a highland storm kilt with traditional Scottish buttonhole featuring a thistle. Paul’s nieces and mum were dressed in royal blue dresses, while Duncan’s bridesmaids, dressed as drag queens, wore a mixture of autumnal hues. 26

Post ceremony, after the newlyweds walked back up the aisle to the sound of bagpipes, guests were served a glass of bubbly in the bar. It was then time to head through to the wedding breakfast of minestrone soup, chicken supreme, and what we’re told was a “magnificent” sticky toffee pudding. The evening bash kicked off at 7pm with fabulous Cher tribute, Marigold Adams, followed by a surprise conga dance to break the ice for the evening guests. A further five artists performed throughout the night including previous X Factor contestant Jenny Ball, a Celion Dion tribute, and several cabaret sets from a variety of drag artists. “There were so many memorable moments,” Paul shares. “If we had to choose one, it would be walking down the aisle and seeing all of our friends, family and community gathered as one, there to celebrate our love and marriage. There was a diverse community of people from all backgrounds – straight, gay, trans, non-binary, white, black, disabled, and everything in between. To us, everyone was and is family.” To finish, Paul has some inspired top tips to help you along your planning journey. “Let your venue team do what you don’t need to. Get to know your wedding coordinator as a person, not just a transaction, as they can and will help to ensure you have the most memorable day by just letting go. Also, visit your venue on a few occasions. This helps to ensure your vision is what it should be, and don’t be afraid to ask to tweak ideas – after all it is your big day.” REAL WEDDINGS 27

The rustic architecture of Birdforth Hall and its surrounding countryside informed the concept for this local shoot Images courtesy of Louise Pollitt Photography Cosy COUNTRYSIDE VIBES Once the venue was chosen for this local shoot, Birdforth Hall, the concept fell quickly into place. The beautifully converted barn naturally offered warmth, texture, and character, while the surrounding landscape and rustic architecture played a huge role in shaping the shoot’s direction, giving it an intimate and grounded atmosphere. The colour palette leans heavily into autumnal tones to complement the cosy feel of the barn featuring warm browns, soft creams, muted rusts and earthy neutrals. Enhancing the warmth of the venue these married beautifully with a sense of comfort and seasonal richness. Meanwhile, the gorgeous gown with boho vibes and tweed suit brought the English countryside feels. The unstructured hair and makeup also complemented the style, keeping things natural. 30

A feast to remember Tailor your wedding breakfast to suit your personalities Like almost every other aspect of your wedding day, the wedding breakfast is something that can be personalised to perfection. Look how far we’ve come! Once upon a time, nothing could be further from the truth. Millennials, hands up if you’ve been to multiple weddings serving the same, bland fare: melon with Parma ham, chicken supreme, and pavlova. It was fine, edible, but it was never going to set the world alight. Rarely did the dishes ever have anything to say about the newlyweds other than, “I’m just here to suit everyone.” When, in reality, all this type of food did was suck the joy out of the room. Happily, those days are behind us. Today’s wedding breakfast is an experience in itself. Modern couples are freeing themselves from the shackles of tradition in favour of food that makes them happy and tells a story. Remember, your wedding breakfast can be memorable – a talking point for years to come, for all the right reasons. And here’s how! Heritage highlights If the two of you come from different cultural backgrounds, why not celebrate both through your wedding breakfast? Fusion menus are a great way forward to bring in the best of both worlds and celebrate the two of you as a couple, bringing the two cuisines together to mirror the marriage of two cultures. Ask your caterer to come up with a blend of the two, for example an English roast with Moroccan spices. If you love this idea but are left lamenting the fact that you’re both British, don’t! You can celebrate different regions of the UK just as you can with other nations. Think of key ingredients that can be locally sourced – Scottish salmon and Welsh lamb are iconic examples. Or, if you’re both from Yorkshire, why not incorporate Yorkshire puds, some delicious Wensleydale cheese, or parkin for an evening snack. Not to mention all the delicious local honey, jams and chutneys you can find at artisan food markets. Alternatively, bring in the global cuisine as part of your love story. Did your spouse ask you to marry them in Italy? Opt for a Mediterranean menu. Do you adore travelling the world together? Choose your favourite cuisine form those destinations and talk to your caterer about devising a creative and cohesive menu inspired by them. Social butterflies If the two of you view dining as a social event, you might want to look into ways of incorporating more interactive ways of dining. With just a small tweak to the traditional three-course seated wedding breakfast, you can introduce sharing dishes for a family feast vibe. Ask your caterer for suggestions that involve a group of terrines full of piping hot goodness served to the table, allowing guests to pass them around and dish up for each other. We love the idea of serving roast joints to be carved by a nominee or volunteer at the table (chef’s hats optional!) along with a myriad of mouthwatering sides to dish up, such as roast or dauphinoise potatoes, salads, grains and sauces. Take the social element to the next level and opt for a stunning grazing table. Perfect for the summer, these can be packed with such treats as cheeses, cured meats, crudites, olives, marinated veg, artisan breads, flavoured butters, dips and whatever else your hearts desire! Ditch the seating plan and allow guests to sit wherever they wish with their plates offering the opportunity to move around and mingle. Festival goers For those who adore the great outdoors and love nothing more than attending live music events and festivals, bring a touch of this vibe to your big day. Ditch the three-course, seated wedding breakfast in favour of an array of street food trucks. As well as ensuring there’s something to suit everyone, you’ll be keeping things informal while keeping the fun going. If you still yearn for 34

unsplash.com@lanxiao9843 nsplash.com@anitaaustvika a traditional wedding breakfast, but love this idea too, you can use it for your evening feast instead as a great way to fuel the dancefloor. There are so many options available, a few of our favourites include gourmet burger trucks, loaded fries, hot dog stands, fish ‘n’ chips and barbecue smokehouse vans. Or go global with a Mexican taco truck, Greek gyros, Thai street food, Caribbean jerk or an old favourite – woodfired pizza. When it comes to dessert, help is also on hand in the shape of an ice cream van or trike, a crêpes, churros or a barista van. Sun worshippers Another one for the outdoor lovers. If you hate being cooped up inside and want to make the most of the summer sun, a barbecue is the perfect choice. Since this is something many venues offer as a wedding breakfast option, it’ll also be simple to pull off. Barbecues also offer the perfect sociable dining experience complete with yummy smells of food cooking, so you’re sure to bring a smile to guests faces. If you’re worried about being able to offer a choice to suit everyone, this is a great way around your dilemma as caterers will generally offer you a range of options to offer your guests, meaning they can pick and choose to tailor their own feast. Vegetarians are also easily accommodated. A typical barbecue menu might include barbecue chicken, pulled pork, gourmet sausages and burgers, and sticky ribs. For those who don’t eat red meat, you can include grilled salmon or king prawn skewers. Vegetarians will love halloumi and vegetable skewers or Portobello mushroom burgers. Then, go wild with sides! You’ve got classic coleslaw, couscous, potato salad, green salads, new potatoes, mac ‘n’ cheese... should we go on? Foodies For the foodies amongst you the wedding breakfast may well feel like the main event. Perhaps you’ve opted for an intimate celebration allowing you to go all out on the elements that mean the most to you. This is super-exciting and a five or seven-course fine-dining menu in a restaurant’s private dining room with a luxurious tablescape may be for you. Here’s an example of a romantic Frenchinspired five-course fine-dining menu to get those taste buds tingling: • Amuse-bouche – Gougères with Comté cheese and truffle • Starter – Duck liver parfait with brioche and fig chutney • Fish course – Sole meunière with caper butter and samphire • Main course – Fillet of beef Rossini with Madeira jus and fondant potato • Dessert – Chocolate fondant with salted caramel ice cream Sweet tooth If you both favour sweet over savoury an afternoon tea wedding breakfast is a great option that’s totally on trend. It also allows you to incorporate many of the other benefits we’ve discussed so far. It has a sociable element with guests chating about their favourite cakes and patisseries; it’s totally informal; there’s something to please everyone – if they don’t like one sandwich filling, they’re bound to like another; and being a cold option it’s the perfect choice for the summer. What’s more, it’s budget friendly without feeling basic. This will suit you if you’ve opted for a country garden or vintage vibe celebration, and offers you the perfect excuse to hire that mismatched, chinz crockery and cake stand you’ve been hankering after. Add in some vintage garden games for the drinks reception and that’s your theme in the bag! Vegan Friendly If one or the two of you enjoy a vegan diet, or you know you’ll have guests who do, you’ll need to carefully consider your approach to your wedding breakfast. Broadly speaking, you have three options: a fully vegan menu (all courses are vegan friendly), a partially vegan menu (vegan options are available as alternatives), or an inclusive menu design (one course might be naturally vegan and suitable for everyone, alternatives are offered for remaining courses). Whichever route you decide to take we recommend enlisting the help of a wedding caterer experienced in vegan cuisine. It’s important they understand plant-based cooking delivering you delicious dishes that aren’t just reaching for vegetarian options without the cheese. Remember, a vegan menu should be thoughtful, not an afterthought. Prepared by the right hands they can be as elegant and satisfying as traditional fare. We challenge your mouths not to water at these ideas: • Starter – Pea and mint soup with truffle oil • Main course – Moroccan tagine with couscous and apricots • Dessert – Lemon tart, aquafaba meringue 36

SUSTAINABILITY You’ve put your best foot forward in curating a wedding day that’s as sustainable as can be. So, how do you employ this all-important ethos when it comes to your wedding breakfast? Here are our top tips. 1 Choose seasonal and local ingredients This helps to reduce the carbon footprint from transportation, all the while supporting local farms and suppliers. 2 Embrace plant-based options They generally have a lower environmental impact than meat-heavy menus. 3 Look for ethically sourced meats and fish Choose organic, free-range, or grassfed meats, or sustainably sourced fish certified by MSC or local regulations. Offer smaller portions of meat, balancing them with plentiful plantbased sides. 4 Reduce food waste Plan carefully to avoid excess and work with your caterer to thoughtfully use any leftovers such as donating to a food bank or homeless shelter, as supplier meals or to take home. 5 Minimal packaging and compostable materials Avoid single-use plastics in the form of individually wrapped snacks. Use compostable or reusable plates, cutlery and straws if applicable. 6 Collaborate with a sustainable caterer Work with a supplier with sustainability at its core and the hard work will be taken care of for you. Ask them about local sourcing and zero-waste policies, and discuss a seasonal tasting menu to make sustainable ingredients shine. unsplash.com@zgrillsaustralia unsplash.com@dreamcatchlight.
