A honeymoon in Rhodes 51 SUITED AND BOOTED Frank Bird in Wakefield and Barnsley offers personalised grooms’ attire services ensuring the man of the hour and his squad look their best come W-day. Well, hello to all you lovely couples of this fine county, and welcome to my very first issue of Your Yorkshire Wedding. I’m super-excited to bring you the absolute best this area has to offer you and your big day, so let’s dive straight in. As we get to know each other, there’s one thing you’ll grow to understand about me: there’s only one thing I’m as obsessed with as weddings and that’s Christmas! So, I’m giddy with excitement already. Yes, here we are at the end of the another year, and is it me, or did 2023 fly by faster than usual? Mind you, with the pandemic growing more and more distant in our rear view mirrors as weddings embrace a sense of back-to-normality, it’s no wonder really. The highlights for me were the Coronation and Carlos Alcaraz’s brilliant win at Wimbledon, as well as getting to see some more of Europe and, of course, celebrating Your Yorkshire Wedding’s shiny new website! When you’ve read this issue, why not have a look around? There’s plenty on offer to keep you ahead of the curve with your wedding planning. Autumn has been unseasonably warm, so I have everything crossed for some chilly weather as we head into winter; especially for those of you with some cosy December nuptials in store. Summer’s all well and good, but the time comes when it’s great to just snuggle up in your favourite jumper and curl up with your spouse-to-be in front of your favourite Netflix show, or better still, with your tablet and favourite wedding magazine! This issue we let the good times roll with our roundup of local wedding entertainment ideas to ensure your big day is one to remember for everyone involved. What’s more, as we take a look into the world of dressing your bridal party you can make sure your bride tribe or groom’s gang are all hot to trot. Finally, for a touch of winter magic, check out our Hot Topic pages where local experts tell us how to bring the joy of the season to your nuptials. So as ever, enjoy and keeeep planning! Check out www.alesandcocktails.co.uk CHEERS TO YOU There’s lots going on at The Gilchrist Collection’s venues at the moment, which locally include Rushpool Hall, Danby Castle Barn and Hackness Grange. The collection has announced its biggest and best giveaway yet, offering you the chance to win your wedding! The incredible prize is a complimentary wedding package at any one of its exclusive-use properties for 40 day guests and 100 evening guests on a Sunday through to Thursday. This includes canapés, champagne, a three-course meal, wine, evening buffet and much more. The competition is open to residents of the UK who are aged 18 and over, and legally eligible to enter into a marriage or civil partnership. Entry closes on Tuesday 2nd January 2024, and the winner will be announced on the 4th. In other news from The Gilchrist Collection, CEO and founder Samantha Gilchrist has conducted a survey of 2,000 UK adults to learn about their wedding drinking habits. Sober guests said they were often left feeling uncomfortable sipping a soft drink, as 35 per cent of respondents said they’re questioned about it. In response to the lack of non-alcoholic options available at venues, The Gilchrist Collection has partnered with star barman Merlin Griffiths from Channel 4’s First Dates to add to the venues’ existing menu, providing sober guests with three new grown-up and celebrationworthy options. Each recipe is perfectly suited to different key moments during the celebrations. Samantha says, “Rather than mimic existing cocktails or simply mix together some fruit juices, each of the new drinks has been designed to give the happy couple and their guests the chance to experience all the wonderful flavours a cocktail has, but without the alcohol. For more, head over to www.gilchristcollection.co.uk FAIRYTALE DREAMS Bolton Castle has offered weddings and private hire for a number of years alongside its commitment to welcoming visitors during its open season. Now, this beautiful location has been shortlisted in the North of England Wedding Awards for the Countryside Venue award. What makes these awards special is that it’s only couples who’ve tied the knot at the venue who are eligible to vote, so as a small venue, the team are delighted to have been recognised among other much larger venues in the region. The Castle’s GM, Jacqui Naylor says, “To be a finalist in such awards is a real boost for the entire team who ensure weddings at Bolton Castle exceed all expectations of our couples, as well as their family and their friends. “As a much-loved visitor attraction, we work hard to bring a programme of excellent visitor events between March and November, with weddings and private event hire offered all year round. To date, it has worked well and whether our couples opt for private or shared hire, the castle provides a fairytale day whatever their plans or budget. The awards are yet to be announced but we feel we’ve already won with our shortlisting.” To find out more, head over to www.boltoncastle.co.uk, and to see whether the venue has been triumphant visit www.northofenglandweddingawards.com www.clairehirst.co.uk www.colinwallworkphotographer.co.uk www.angelawaitesphotography.co.uk NEWS 9

Last Meeting at a Christmas party led to a festive engagement for Emma and Tom Images courtesy of Joel Skingle Photography Video courtesy of Adam Wing Films CHRISTMAS 26

Emma met Tom at a friend’s Christmas party in Newcastle. “I was a student in my second year of uni, whereas Tom’s from the city,” says Emma. “There was an instant attraction and we spent the whole party getting to know each other ending the evening dancing in the living room to Wham’s Last Christmas oblivious to everyone watching! We arranged to meet up after the party and Tom moved into my university house! After graduating I got offered a job in Oxford, so while Tom continued his studies at Teesside University, we had to do long distance for a number of years. You could say we got well acquainted with trains and late night farewells on a Sunday. After five years we finally settled down and lived together in Oxfordshire.” Tom proposed in December 2020 at Emma’s family villa in Spain. “Tom’s a game designer, so it only seemed right that he create a scavenger hunt-style proposal for me, hiding clues around the villa with the help of my sisters,” continues Emma. “Each clue was personal to our story, such as: ‘This next clue can be found somewhere cold and is also the name of one of our favourite movies’. Of course, he meant Frozen, so the next clue was in the freezer, and so on. The final clue led me outside, where I found flickering candles guiding me to the terrace. Our song, Shania Twain’s You’re Still The One, was playing on the loudspeakers, with Tom waiting for me under our family olive tree, with the final clue asking me to marry him. We celebrated with amazing fireworks, red velvet cake and champagne!” The couple set the date for 3 December 2022, choosing Trinity Methodist Church Harrogate for their service, and Goldsborough Hall for their reception. Here, Emma tells us more about their wedding… MEET ME AT THE ALTAR When it came to choosing where to wed, there was no doubt in the couple’s mind. “I’m Harrogate born and bred, and Tom’s from the North too, so we couldn’t picture anywhere else!” says the bride. “We knew we wanted to get married at Christmas, and also wanted a religious service. The whole church ceremony was incredible, especially hearing the poem my cousin Pippa wrote and read. Entitled A Promise Kept, it was all about our relationship, detailing how we met, and how Tom gave me a promise ring on our one year anniversary, knowing one day we’d tie the knot. It was so personal, and we now have it in pride of place at home!” Music is a huge part of Emma’s life, so she was thrilled when her childhood choir, St Robert’s, agreed to sing at their wedding. “They included our favourite carol O Holy Night, as well as O Come all Ye Faithful and Hark the Herald Angels Sing,” continues Emma. “I thoroughly enjoyed singing along to the descant with the choir, much to Tom’s amusement!” IT’S CHRISTMAS! The couple were keen to embody the spirit of Christmas for their wedding, but without being over the top. “We opted for a subtle and elegant winter wonderland theme, choosing maroon and burgundy with hints of rose gold and blush,” says Emma. “We used this scheme for our invitations – rich burgundy with rose gold foil – also weaving it into our table plans and place cards. As one of our favourite things about Christmas is the festive films, Scan to view video 27 REAL WEDDINGS

we also decided to have It’s a Wonderful Life, The Santa Clause, Elf, The Grinch, The Snowman, Bad Santa, Christmas Carol, Home Alone and Love Actually as table names.” Dressing the tables was equally as important. “We used frosted acrylic glass stands to embody the festive theme, with candelabras with a festive wreath and winter flowers for our centrepieces,” continues Emma. “We also added a selfie stick to each table, so guests could take group shots together. This worked really well – we got some great photos!” WEAR IT WELL Emma found her dream dress at Harrogate Bridal Rogue Gallery. “I tried on four gowns in total, falling in love with the Pronovias Elara A-line tulle design,” remembers the bride. “The diamanté sparkles looked like glittering ice on the white dress, and both my mum and step mum cried tears of joy when they saw me in it! I teamed it with a feathered white shawl, cathedral veil with diamanté crystals and a lace and silver leaf hair accessory.” Emma and Tom made sure the rest of the party was also dressed to impress. “Tom wore a tailored black velvet dinner jacket and matching trousers, with double-breasted waistcoat, bow tie and patent shoes. His two best men wore matching black tie tuxedos, while my bridesmaids looked stunning in maroon floor-length dresses with faux fur shrugs. Then there was our flowergirl, Rosie, who looked gorgeous in her rose gold dress with sparkly shoes and flower crown. Even our family dog, cockapoo Molly, got involved as our dog-of-honour. She had a personalised maroon bandana to match the bridesmaids!” FESTIVE FEAST Emma and Tom made sure their guests were well fed on their big day. “The food at Goldsborough Hall for the wedding breakfast was incredible,” says the bride. “We chose smoked salmon with lemon, pickled shallot and capers to begin, followed by roasted corn-fed chicken, mushroom duxelles, pommes Anna and madeira sauce for our main meal. Dessert came in the form of a truly decadent sticky toffee pudding. My husband was very lucky that my step mum let him have hers as well since she was too full!” The couple’s wedding cake also had serious wow factor. “We wanted to continue our maroon, blush and rose gold theme, with our supplier creating a beautiful four-tiered cake with flavours of chocolate, red velvet, Victoria sponge and carrot,” continues Emma. “We served this for our evening guests as part of the buffet, which went down a treat.” DANCEFLOOR READY Entertainment-wise, Emma and Tom opted for a live band and DJ. “For our first dance we of course chose You’re Still the One, as it holds a lot of importance to us,” says Emma. “The band sang this live and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house! They then sang We Found Love, which immediately had guests up on the dancefloor, jumping up and down to Rihanna’s classic tune. To be honest, there really wasn’t a moment where the dancefloor wasn’t full and we couldn’t stop smiling all night.” Emma was also keen to have a traditional father daughter dance. “What song works better than Boney M’s Daddy Cool?” laughs the bride. “It was such a fun song to dance to, with Tom and I twisting and twirling around with our dads. My sisters then joined in and dad loved having his moment to show off his spectacular dancing!” 28
