AFTER Appy Ever A match on an app led to everlasting love for Sarah and Oli Images courtesy of Tom Benson Photography Sarah met Oli through the dating app, Bumble. “I messaged asking if I’d met Oli before – a genuine question as I really thought I had!” says Sarah. “He replied quickly, then we went on our first date 10 days later. Fast forward another two weeks, and I found myself sitting in a quaint Yorkshire pub meeting Oli’s parents!” Oli proposed during a trip away to Bamburgh. “Before we left, I was searching for the toothpaste and realised Oli had already packed it,” continues the bride. “I went in his washbag to get it out, and was met with a stern look and a few choice words telling me not to go through his things – which was strange and totally out of character for him! The drive there was quiet, and I thought I might have upset him, but when we arrived Oli was keen to take the warm Champagne we’d packed on a beach walk with us. Looking back, the signs where there, but I wasn’t listening to them at all! Eventually, Oli suggested we sit on some rocks looking at the view across the sea, before asking me to stand up and look at the water for a picture. When I turned back round, there he was down on one knee. I of course said, ‘Yes!’.” The couple set the date of 31 May 2023, choosing Skipbridge Country Weddings as their venue. Here, Sarah tells us more about their big day… 27 REAL WEDDINGS

I had a locket tied around my bouquet which was gifted to me by my late grandma. When I used to visit, I insisted on looking at the pictures inside; a photo of my late grandparents on their wedding day and a picture of my mum and her brother when they were young. We had giant garden games including croquette, Jenga and Connect Four to entertain friends and family. It was a great way to break up the formalities and give everyone a chance to chat in a fun way. My four-yearold nephew, Jenson, was our ring bearer. However, we decided not to give him the real rings, as panic would entail if he ran off in a different direction – so we gave him Minnie and Mickey Mouse rings in his box! We decided on dried flowers in keeping with the rustic style of the venue, choosing eucalyptus and preserved roses, which are guaranteed for three to five years. We fell in love with Skipbridge Country Weddings straight away! From its outside dance floor, to the grand tipi with open fires and Chesterfield sofas, it gave off a relaxed, festival vibe that was different to the norm. The day before we married I was worried there’d be a lack of height for our centre pieces; so I sent Oli off to source gypsophila to match the buttonholes and bouquets, which we placed in vases recycled from my sister’s wedding. 28

Oli and his best man wore sage green three-piece suits with a white shirt and dark green tie; while the rest of the groomsmen were free to choose their own style. We also bought matching ties and pocket squares for the groomsmen to complement the overall look. I didn’t know what my bridesmaids were wearing until the morning of the wedding! They live in Harrogate and Surrey, so it would have been difficult to arrange a day to go shopping, and I also wanted dresses they’d wear again. I gave them our colour palette and let them choose their own! Thinking it might rain, I bought umbrellas, blankets and even personalised Mrs Clark wellies! When I then realised how hot it would be, I had a mad dash buying handheld fans and flip-flops for those who wanted to carry on dancing – even if their shoes wouldn’t allow them to! My dress was from Wed2B, choosing the Jonah design; a draped bodice combined with off-the-shoulder straps and fitted skirt, finished with thousands of iridescent sequins and beads. To keep the children – and some adults! – amused we also had a bubble machine, which looked amazing as they caught the sunlight and drifted off around the venue. Sticking with our rustic theme, I made the name cards myself. I sourced wooden slices as the base, using stamps and ink for everyone’s name and their role in the wedding. 29 REAL WEDDINGS

He created a PowerPoint of different photos of him and Oli, and also wrote a poem about their friendship. Andy also played a prank. He gave out keys at the start of the day to a few people, simply saying they’d know what to do when asked. During his speech, he then asked guests to return their keys to Oli’s house now he was married; and they all came up and sheepishly put them in the bucket! When we were lining up for the confetti shot, Oli turned to me and said he was having an out-of-body experience as this was our wedding; our confetti shot. We had to keep pinching ourselves and reminding ourselves that this was our day! Our photographer, Tom, was fantastic. Guests commented how friendly and approachable he was, and that they didn’t feel like they had a camera in their face, feeling totally at ease having their picture taken. 30

Turkish Craig’s Turkish proposal to Rebecca was nothing short of perfect Images courtesy of The Kensington Photographer DELIGHT 32

Rebecca met Craig on a dating app. “We had our first date at a coffee shop and instantly clicked, chatting for ages nursing our now-freezing cold drinks,” says Rebecca. “We were talking for so long that we didn’t realise the shop had closed an hour earlier – and the staff were too polite to tell us to leave!” Craig originally ordered Rebecca’s engagement ring at the end of February 2020, with the plan to propose in front of friends and family in Reading, where they’d first met. “Covid had other ideas, with government restrictions delaying production of the ring and stopping large gatherings,” continues the bride. “Instead, he popped the question on holiday in Turkey, where we’d hired a villa with family for two weeks. On the day, he taught his twin brother how to use his camera, instructing him to hide around a corner and get ready for ‘the moment’. Then, just as the sun started to set, our families slowly disappeared into the villa; hiding on the balcony to watch. Craig led me to the side of the pool and got down on one knee, asking, ‘Will you let me annoy you for the rest of our lives?’. Obviously, I said yes!” The couple set the date for 8 April 2023, choosing The Oakwood at Ryther for their big day. Here, Rebecca tells us more about their wedding… ROOM TO MANOEUVRE The couple first visited The Oakwood at Ryther in April 2021 and were instantly drawn to how much space the venue has. “We loved the exposed beams in the ceremony area, the size of the reception barn along with its mezzanine level, and the amount of light it had,” says Rebecca. “The venue was decorated to an extent when we visited, but it was clear that it didn’t need much as it was so beautiful already. All in all, we loved the simplicity and elegance of the space that also allowed us to put our own twist on it.” Another huge bonus came in the form of the venue’s on-site accommodation. “This meant that close family and friends were able to stay the night before, as well as on the day of the wedding,” continues the bride. “We had a lovely little celebration on the first night, hiring a pizza van to cater for us all. It was such a nice way to build up to the wedding weekend, and also meant that different members of the party got to know each other beforehand.” IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS Rebecca and Craig wanted their wedding to reflect them both, so Craig chose a London Underground-themed table plan to represent his East London roots. “We recreated the tube map, with each table named after a different line, but with a hint of the eucalyptus print on our wedding stationary, tying everything together,” says Rebecca. “We used menus as place settings, folded into the napkins to show the name at the top. Decorated with the same motifs that were on our save the dates, invites, and all signage at the wedding; they featured a blend of eucalyptus leaves and white and blush roses.” When it came to the actual flowers, the couple decided on all silk. “This was more friendly for the environment, my allergies – and our bank account!” laughs the bride. “Our florist, Anne, understood our vision of a rustic theme, and made sure that none of the arrangements were too polished or perfect. She added green foliage to complement our colour scheme, and recommended a mix of cream, blush and purple flowers. She 33 REAL WEDDINGS

also put together a beautiful wisteria arch which was placed behind the top table, as well as flower garlands across the mezzanine level. She also organised small chair decorations for the ceremony barn, along with flower arrangements for either end of the aisle.” COME DINE WITH ME Food was a huge part of the couple’s day. “We started with canapés of roast beef-filled mini Yorkshire puddings, rosemary and olive goat’s cheese scones, and belly of pork with black pudding purée,” says Rebecca. “For our wedding breakfast, friends and family enjoyed starters of Iberico chorizo, Whitby scallop and pork belly served with apple and chorizo cannelloni; wild Yorkshire mushrooms on balsamic sourdough toast; or chicken liver parfait with red onion marmalade and sourdough crisps. The main course was either hog roast served with Yorkshire puddings, chive-crushed potatoes, tender stem broccoli, carrots, stuffing, and ‘proper’ gravy; sea bass with pearl barley and mussel risotto, parsley purée, sea vegetables and chestnut mushrooms; or roast butternut squash filo parcel with pimento sauce, chive-crushed new potatoes, tender stem broccoli and carrots. This was all followed by Greek lemon cake with ice cream, or frozen apple parfait with apple sorbet, fresh apple, caramel, fennel meringue and sherbet.” For their wedding cake, Rebecca and Craig opted for a design made of cheese. “Created by Love Cheese of York, it featured six cheese wheels over five layers,” remembers the bride. “We decorated it with small flower garlands put together by our florist, placing it on a personalised laser cut cake board and finishing with a wooden topper. After we cut the cake, our caterers laid it out on the top table for our evening spread, along with crackers and chutneys from Wilkin & Sons.” WEAR IT WELL Rebecca found her dream dress in Essex, where the couple now live. “I wore the Champagne Arabella design from Abigail’s Collection in Colchester,” she says. “My mum and maid of honour picked out the dress originally, but when I saw it on the hanger I initially dismissed it. However, I’m so pleased they persuaded me to try it on! The ballgown fit was very flattering for my shape, and also made me feel beautiful and ‘bridal’. The dress had a stunning glittery underlayer that shimmered as I walked, with the lace keeping it classic and traditional. I also loved how the buttons ran all the way down the back, from the top to the very end of the train.” Craig, his groomsmen and both dads, meanwhile, headed to Slater Menswear to pick out their suits. “We wanted the men to wear a tweed-style design, as we felt it worked well with our venue as well as being in keeping with a Yorkshire wedding,” says Rebecca. “Choosing light sage green suits with burgundy ties, Craig opted for a paisley tie to separate himself from the rest of the party.” Then there were the bridesmaids, choosing satin burgundy floor-length gowns from David’s Bridal. “Their dresses were A-line, with a plunge neckline, low back and flutter sleeves. I also had a modesty panel sewn into my stepdaughter’s dress, as she’s only 13 and this made her feel more comfortable.” LET’S DANCE! Entertainment-wise, Rebecca and Craig opted for a live band. “We chose Nic & The Wildhearts, booking them as a duo to perform for the reception drinks, then as a five-piece band for three sessions throughout the evening,” says Rebecca. “Nic was unfortunately unwell on the day of our wedding and couldn’t perform – but our guests were none the wiser, as she arranged REBECCA’S TOP TIP “Be organised. We had a mega-spreadsheet that we filled in with the contact details of all of our suppliers, the deposits paid and when further payments were needed.” REAL WEDDINGS 35

Then, to fill the time between the end of the meal and the band setting up, Craig’s younger brother hosted a round of Mr and Mrs – with a bride and groom rubber duck on a stick as the Mr and Mrs! He did a great job making everyone laugh, with questions like, ‘Who’s the better driver?’, ‘Who does the cat love more?’, and ‘Who’s the messiest?’ – with us obviously disagreeing with most of our answers!” 36

Wedded bliss See Natalie and Jonathan’s Carlton Towers celebration Images courtesy of Jane Beadnell Photography Natalie met Jonathan more than 10 years ago when working together on a construction project in Hull. “I actually used to work in internal audit for the company, and realised only after meeting Jonathan face-to-face that I’d picked him out of a bunch of co-workers to audit on a previous job,” says Natalie. “Needless to say, he passed with flying colours! After getting to know one another we learnt we shared common grounds and interests; quickly realising we’d found something special.” Jonathan popped the question on Christmas Day 2018. “By now we’d lived together for just over three years,” continues the bride. “There was no meaning behind the date chosen, other than it just felt right for Jonathan at that point in time. He also kept the proposal to himself, as he thought it was more intimate and special that way.” The couple set the date of 4 February 2023, choosing Carlton Towers as their venue. Here, Natalie tells us more about their big day… 39 REAL WEDDINGS

Carlton Towers is a special venue for us both, as we often spend Valentine’s Day there. We picked the first Saturday in February as our wedding date, giving guests the chance to get over the Christmas hype – plus it also fell on the day before my birthday! Jonathan and his groomsmen wore matching Marc Darcy suits, light in colour with navy edging to complement the bridesmaids’ dresses. Both of my parents are no longer with us, so my gorgeous stepson, Thomas, gave me away. He’s only 21 and was so nervous, which helped ease my own worries about walking down the aisle. We went for gold twig wishing trees for centrepieces to tie-in with the gold gothic décor at Carlton Towers. It fitted in very well for our winter wedding. We decided on sweet cones for the favours in a white and gold theme, so each and everyone attending could enjoy them. A large ornate mirror was chosen for the seating plan to be scribed on. It matched perfectly with the table décor and was very grand in appearance. 40

We had our place names hand crafted, with the hope friends and family would take them as a keepsake. Many guests have since shared how they’ve used them in their own homes. I wanted a simple bouquet, with more foliage than flowers. My florist produced the most wonderful aesthetic bouquet you could ever imagine, even popping in a hidden blue eryngium for good luck. The inspiration for our cake was taken from the second Sex and the City movie. Its floating illusion with crystal décor and simplicity was incredible! I found my Elysee Bridal gown after searching for what seemed like a lifetime for the perfect dress! Opting for simplicity, it featured sheer satin fabric over decadent lace. I teamed it with a long gold veil and ivory heels with a gold butterfly. My bridesmaids wore deep navy floor-length gowns with long lace sleeves and an open back, with the colour working perfectly alongside my ivory wedding dress and gold venue décor. Our daughter, Erin, was only five months old when we married. She wore a stunning ivory dress with ruffles and navy bow, and was the most gorgeous flower girl you’ve ever seen. 41 REAL WEDDINGS

Our other daughter held a sign as she walked into the ceremony room that read, ‘Daddy, it’s time to give Mummy our last name’. It was a special and poignant moment for Jonathan. Enjoy every second of your special day – it goes so quickly! One of my biggest regrets is not having a videographer to capture the moments we couldn’t be there to see.
