Hello from your new Editor of Your Yorkshire Wedding! The lovely Rachel has moved on to pasture’s new, but never fear – I’ve years of experience in helping you source suppliers and organise the best day of your lives; also editing our sister title, Your North East Wedding. I hope you’ll enjoy reading the features I’ve researched and compiled as much as I love putting them together. Formalities over and done with, let’s get on with the good stuff – planning your big day! If you’re as much of a sucker as I am when it comes to reading about other couple’s celebrations, turn to our three reader weddings, starting with Dani and Alex’s laidback affair on page 27. From there it’s all things grand and beautiful, courtesy of Olga and Oliver’s high society wedding (complete with British nobility!) on page 32; before a castle wedding of dreams for Rachel and Jonny on page 38. And that’s before you’ve even started to delve into our exclusive shoots, with Rise Hall and Sneaton Castle the venues of choice for these picture-perfect snaps (see pages 43 and 49 respectively). All that plus Yorkshire’s best wedding photographers (p53), regional jewellery and accessories (p71), barns and farms to wed in (p21) and much more! I hope you enjoy my first issue – see you in May! SING A SONG Great music is high on the hit list for any engaged couple when planning their wedding, so make sure your guests are well entertained by considering Leon Marshall to sing and play. “As a singing guitarist I provide live music from the intimacy of the ceremony, during reception drinks and your wedding breakfast, before getting the party started for the evening reception. I have a repertoire of around 300 songs ranging from rock ’n’ roll through to popular songs today. I give my couples the option of choosing songs that I’ll play from my list if they’d like, and if there’s something that’s not on the list I’ll certainly have a go at learning it! My packages start from £250 for the ceremony on its own, to £1,450 for the whole day – but for the full day you’ll get ceremony music, two 45 minutes sets during the drinks reception, two 45 minute sets during the wedding breakfast, four 45 minute sets during the evening, and a playlist of background music for between the sets.” Visit www.leonmarshall.co.uk for more info. HAPPY SNAPPER If you’re still searching for a wedding photographer, consider Richmond’s Katrina & Her Camera, who covers North Yorkshire, the North East and beyond. “I’ve been a hobbyist photographer for the past five years and since having children decided to turn my passion into a career,” says Katrina. “I was asked to second shoot some weddings with another photographer last year and got the bug – and am now available to shoot your own special day. I’m keeping it simple with my introductory prices, starting with The Full Thing – £,1000 for eight hours of coverage, along with around 400+ digital images and a complimentary pre-wedding shoot. I’ve also a Short & Sweet package available, which is £550 for four hours and includes around 200+ digital images.” Also offering a flexible rate for those looking for something a bit less formal, Katrina is currently running a special offer for 2023 weddings of just £850 for The Full Thing package. Get in there quick by heading to www.katrinaandhercamera.com for more info. WINTER’S COMING Love the thought of a winter celebration? Work Mates Alex got more than he bargained for on his first day at a new job: a wife! Images courtesy of Amy Jordison Photography Dani met Alex met when he started at the same company she worked at. “It was his first day and I happened to be covering reception for the morning,” says the bride. “Alex’s manager left him waiting in reception for a while, so we ended up chatting – and got on from that very first meeting.” Alex popped the question four years later, under the stars at the Grand Canyon. “That’s what we tell people, at least!” laughs Dani. “I’d been excited about it being an amazing stargazing location, but after we’d driven out and found a place to park, we looked up to see nothing but clouds! After 15 minutes, a small clearing revealed about six stars, which is when Alex seized the moment and proposed. I had my suspicions he might ask me during the trip, but it was a wonderful surprise at that moment.” The couple set the date of 23rd April, 2022, marrying at Hornington Manor. Here, Dani tells us more about their big day… 27 REAL WEDDINGS

We both decided to write our own vows, and are so glad we did. They were only short but added a personal touch to our ceremony that we’ll remember forever. I found my Stella York wedding dress at Ava Rose Hamilton in Silsden. The staff were amazing, helping me choose a structured Matte Mikado ballgown with lace overlay on the bodice. The table centrepieces were either ruscus trees or floating candles in longstemmed glass vases, sat on wooden log slices surrounded by greenery. It was a magical sight to see when we walked into our wedding breakfast. We were both nervous on the morning of the wedding, so agreed to do a ‘first look’ at each other just before the main ceremony. It really took a bit of the pressure off. We wanted our wedding to be timeless and beautiful, but also laidback, and Hornington Manor was perfect. It even has 19 bedrooms which we were able to book out for the entire weekend. My dad made a wooden wedding arch from scratch for our ceremony, which my mum adorned with copious amounts of greenery and flowers. It was stunning! 28

Our chocolate, lemon and Victoria sponge wedding cake was made by Iced Yorkshire, choosing a simple design of white milk wash icing, greenery for decoration and a sparkly gold cake topper. Alex and I are really into gigs, so knew we wanted a live band – and The Bees Knees were amazing! Alex is a drummer and asked to join the band for a couple of songs, which they happily agreed to, even rehearsing together a few weeks before the wedding. We hired out a wedding-themed crazy golf course, which our guests loved. There was a lot of healthy competition going on during the afternoon, especially after a couple of drinks! We booked professionally trained West End singers and musicians as singing waiters, who served canapés and drinks before breaking into song during dessert. Everyone was gobsmacked, and they even got our family and friends involved in their set! Alex wore a grey suit, opting for tails and ivory waistcoat to stand out from the groomsmen. The guys teamed this with sage ties and pocket squares, plus fresh ivory rose and greenery buttonholes. My bridesmaids wore maxi-length, sleeveless sage dresses. As they were different ages and heights, I wanted to make sure they were happy with what they wore, so gave them a choice of designs. 29 REAL WEDDINGS

So many guests told us it was the best wedding they’d ever been to! Our main objective when planning was for everyone to have an incredible time, so we couldn’t have asked for more. Spell A chance meeting at a Halloween ball led to happily ever after for Olga and Oliver Images courtesy of Charlotte Hedgecock Photography BOUND 32

Ukrainian-born Olga met Oliver at a Halloween ball at private London members’ club, Annabel’s. “Oliver was dressed as Dracula and spotted me on the dancefloor,” says the bride. “He thinks he acted suave trying to catch my attention, but he looked like a gazelle caught in the headlights, with his mouth wide open! I joined him for a drink at the bar, and we spent the rest of the night chatting, meeting for lunch and a walk around Hyde Park the next day. Our relationship progressed from there, which wasn’t easy at first, seeing as I lived in London – and Oliver lived in North Yorkshire!” Oliver proposed to Olga during the height of Covid, with the couple moving in together the day before lockdown to prevent them being 250 miles apart. “On Christmas Eve, after a few presents under the tree as a decoy – his way of indicating no engagement ring was coming! – Oliver suggested we walk around Castle Howard’s grounds. Distracting me by saying my shoe was dirty, I turned to check – and Oliver swiftly got down on one knee with a diamond ring in hand!” The couple set the date for the 3rd September, 2022, choosing Ripon Cathedral for their service, followed by a reception at Grantley Hall. Here, Olga tells us more about their amazing day… WORSHIP ME Olga and Oliver were lucky enough to have their marriage conducted at Ripon Cathedral, which was built in 672. “I run the charity EmbraceMe Foundation (www.embracemefoundation.com), which provides humanitarian support for Ukraine and its refugees,” says Olga. “Due to the charity raising significant funds at the Ripon International Festival at Ripon Cathedral a few months prior, we were granted permission to have our ceremony there. It was a princess-style wedding every girl dreams of, with my mother walking me down the aisle, escorted by my four bridesmaids. The service was held by the Dean of Ripon John Dobson, who delivered the most magical service, which was grand and personal at the same time.” When it came to their reception, Olga and Oliver fell in love with Grantley Hall. “Luxurious and award-winning, it was everything we could have asked for,” said the bride. “A beautiful setting for an elegant wedding celebration, it offered a unique blend of rich history and modern luxury.” GOING GREEN The couple opted for green and ivory cream for their theme, alongside many personal touches. “To us, these colours are a classic combination of aristocracy,” continues Olga. “We carried this throughout our day, with tall flower displays at the cathedral high altar, and a 25 metre wisteria hanging garland, which my mum and I made, for our reception. Hung on a ceiling ring where 33 REAL WEDDINGS

our wedding breakfast was held, monitors were carefully attached to the ring, streaming tailor-made videos from the moment we met until the days before our wedding.” When it came to the seating plan, Olga and Oliver were keen to name each table after a place important to them. “The head table was Happily Ever After,” says the bride. “We also chose Basil’s and Tortuga, among others, named after Oliver’s favourite bar and villa on Mustique Island, St Vincent and The Grenadines. Choosing where guests sat took some planning by Oliver, taking into consideration friends’ and families’ interests, politics and preferences.” DRESS TO IMPRESS No expense was spared when it came to the bride’s dress. “My bespoke gown was created by an award-winning designer from Ukraine, and took over a year to make,” says Olga. “It was befitting for our high society wedding, with guests including British nobility, the UK’s most prominent business leaders and high net worth individuals from overseas. The ivory satin bodice was inspired by Grace Kelly’s royal wedding dress, featuring embroidery with floral motifs cut from hand-made lace, appliquéd onto silk tulle. Thirty eight crystals were used instead of buttons, while the top of the dress was covered with thousands of crystal beads. I finished my look with a bridal train that was just shy of three metres, and a five metre veil with yet more crystal beading.” The groom also looked the part, with a tailored navy-blue morning suit with grey trousers, vest and mustard tie. “His groomsmen wore traditional tails, while my bridesmaids were dressed in sage floor-length gowns, also designed by a Ukrainian award-winning designer,” continues the bride. LET’S EAT Paying attention to their guests’ every need was also important to Olga and Oliver. “We started with drinks at Grantley Hall’s Après at The Orchard, before enjoying a four-course Michelin-star wedding breakfast,” says the bride. “Later, we cut our cake – a five-storey salted caramel creation. Decorated with pearls and white edible ‘lace’, it featured fresh foliage, hydrangea and white country roses on the perimeter circle of each tier. But the food and drink didn’t stop there, with a free bar, drinks, canapés and late-night sandwiches served throughout the evening.” The groom was a professional DJ in his twenties, meaning it was down to Oliver to organise the music. “Oliver’s always known what tunes to play to get everyone dancing,” says Olga. “He therefore pre-mixed records for the reception, wedding breakfast and first dance – Van Morrison’s Someone Like You, the favourite song of his late father, who passed away in 2021. A private DJ then entertained our guests for a few hours, before we partied until 2am at Grantley Hall’s very own nightclub, Valeria’s.” 35 REAL WEDDINGS

LESSONS in love Rachel and Jonny knew they were meant for each other after just four months Images courtesy of Matt Godman Wedding Photography Rachel and Jonny met while the bride was studying for a Master’s in Archaeology at the University of York. “Jonny lived close by in Beverley, and we initially started talking about how much we love the countryside – and how much we love dogs!” says Rachel. “We met at the weekends, and on our third date Jonny took me for drinks to celebrate having submitted my dissertation that morning.” As the relationship progressed, the couple spoke more about spending their future together. “This meant we came to an understanding that we were going to get married before anyone proposed!” continues the bride. “After dating for less than four months, we started talking about engagement rings, and I asked my dad if I might have my great grandmother’s, which he’d put away. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get it fitted down to my size, so I chose my own antique engagement ring, keeping our wedding bands as a surprise gift to exchange on the day.” The couple chose the 28th May, 2022 for their celebration, marrying at Bolton Castle. Here, Rachel tells us more about their wedding… 38

We wanted a venue not too far from Jonny’s family in East Yorkshire, and were stunned when we saw Bolton Castle. The fact they could host the ceremony and reception as well sealed the deal! We opted for large sharing platters for the wedding breakfast, as we loved the idea of long banqueting tables in the main hall. Bolton Castle even had decorative ‘thrones’ for us to sit on! Jonny’s mum Jane made our cake – and it was delicious! The top tier was lemon with curd, the middle chocolate with ganache, and the bottom fruit with marzipan. I asked our florist to put together whatever she thought best, with an emphasis on greenery and flowers that were local and in season. I knew I wanted a dress with a high neckline and long sleeves, but couldn’t find many to choose from. In the end I found my vintage Laura Ashley dress on Etsy – and it fitted perfectly! Over the course of the year preceding the wedding, Jonny’s mum also collected flower petals to dry and make into confetti. As well as sharing platters for the main meal, our guests were served canapés with their reception drinks. We also had a dessert table as well as the wedding cake, opting for a pie and cheese buffet for our evening food. REAL WEDDINGS 39

Jonny wore a beige Hugo Boss suit with green tweed waistcoat and pink Hermés tie. The colours complemented the greens and pinks of the flowers, plus the castle’s stonework, perfectly. We have to commend Dave and Susie, who work at the castle and function as Masters of Ceremony. Nothing was too much – Dave even hosted archery for the guests to try in the courtyard. One of the highlights of the day – besides getting married! – were the musicians we hired to play instrumental medieval music. We had each other’s wedding bands engraved with a surprise message. Standing in the courtyard directly after the ceremony, we finally read the messages we’d be wearing for the rest of our lives. On the day of the wedding our cat, Sausage, went missing! Our house sitter messaged before the ceremony to say he’d been found, so my smile during our vows might have looked a bit like relief! I loved not having much structure in the day, managing to avoid running around trying to find people for photos, or trying to corral people into different situations. 40
