I’m a huge fan of the Mediterranean-vibe, the hues are so warming so works at any time of year! Surprisingly, one of the ‘décor’ elements of your wedding reception will be the cake! This too should encompass your chosen theme, it provides a perfect opportunity to carry the cohesive look through the finer details. The house and landscaped sunken gardens were designed by the renowned architect of the time Thomas Wright, who was also responsible for several other very special period features, such as the heart-shaped lake and the exquisitely decorated shell grotto. The grotto served as a banqueting house and no doubt was the venue of many moonlit parties. Today the grotto is a rare blend of two upper class obsessions of the time: Rococo garden design and shell collecting. IN LOVE Lessons Teachers Karleen and Fiona tied the knot in the very school where they met Images courtesy of Kate Bamber Photographic Karleen and Fiona met at work, when Fiona started teaching at the same school at Karleen. After hitting it off, it was Karleen that got down on one knee at a romantic treehouse retreat during a weekend away! Fast-foward, their wedding date was set for 4th August 2025, with Marden Park Mansion setting the scene for their special day. Picking the venue came easily to Karleen and Fiona, deciding the school they work at would be the perfect place, and with exclusive weekend hire, it was a no-brainer! Karleen adds, “It’s a beautiful venue with stunning grounds providing great opportunities for beautiful pictures. The wedding planners at the venue are so helpful and a real dream to work with – especially as we did it in 56 days!” Karleen and Fiona’s chosen theme was ‘travel with rustic charm’; featuring soft pinks, browns, and wildflowers. Karleen and Fiona tasked their florist with transforming five spaces with flower displays, in keeping with their theme and paying homage to the period features in the venue. For favours, they had mini suitcases packed with sweets and personalised aeroplane magnets. Their wedding cake exuded all things travel, with each layer being decorated with the theme in mind. The flavours of this cake extravaganza included vanilla, Oreo, Biscoff and chocolate – delicious! Karleen and Fiona decided to name the tables after locations they’d visited as a couple which perfectly highlighted the travelling theme. These locations were signified by map outlines in gold on sage-green backgrounds, tying in the gold on the magnets and cake. The key to ensuring your theme is cohesive is to implement elements of it throughout. The catering is a highlight for guests at any wedding, to keep their loved ones satisfied, Karleen and Fiona served up a delicious range of canapés, including jerk chicken skewers, Peking duck and many other delicacies. For the wedding breakfast, barbecue pulled pork was the star of the show, followed by a dessert aptly named Woldingham mess! In the evening, they rolled out an impressive buffet with all the classics, finishing with waffles, churros, and an ice cream cart – wow! For their bridal looks, Karleen wore her mum’s dress, a Bridgette Moore design, something she’d always had her heart set on. She adds, “I’d always loved its unique style with the long jacket. I didn’t even go to look at other dresses, I just knew.” Fiona wore a Victoria Jane dress by Ronald Joyce which perfectly complemented Karleen’s. Their bridesmaids wore dresses ranging in colours from coral, brown and sage. To entertain their guests on the big day, before the partying started, Karleen and Fiona hired some garden games to keep everyone busy. For the evening, a DJ ensured everyone celebrated in style, dancing the night away, and a photo booth allowed people to take away a memento from the day. Karleen adds, “our two dogs, Niko and Nala, kept guests busy too!” For this lovely couple, some moments that stood out to them was being in a room surrounded by their loved ones, and their rugby teammates hoisting them up in the airon the dancefloor! Olivia and Matt met by complete chance one weekend in a shop in Wimbledon. “It was a real Sliding Doors moment we are so glad happened,” recalls Olivia. After romance blossomed, Matt proposed at Castle Leslie in Ireland at New Year. “The sun was just coming up by the lake, the ground was covered in beautiful frost and we were the only ones there – it was just perfect,” shares Olivia. The big date was set, 11th October 2025, with The Bush hotel setting the scene, “As I grew up in Farnham, it was lovely to get married in my hometown, and have the ceremony at the local Parish Church,” explains Olivia. “However, as Matt is from Northern Ireland, it was important that we chose a venue where all our guests could stay, and that had good transport links. The Bush was absolutely ideal for this, as well as being a beautiful backdrop for our day.” The couple decided not to choose a specific theme or colour palette, opting for just a few, carefully considered personal touches and soft, pale autumnal colours. “We used crystal bud vases on our tables with fresh flowers, combined with an assortment of candles in gold candlesticks decorated with ivory bows,” adds Olivia. “We had a beautiful floral arrangement over the porch of the church, as well as flowers decorating the interior. 32
We arranged a personalised mirror welcome sign and card box for the reception too!” On the day, Olivia wore a Mikaella wedding dress Style 2308 from May & Grace. “I knew that I wanted a timeless dress, more striking in its shape and silhouette than decoration,” says Olivia. “This one ticked all the boxes, with close fitting sleeves and a beautiful skirt and train. Matt loved it too when he saw it for the first time as I walked down the aisle!” Matt looked dapper in a navy Donegal tweed suit from Moss Hire, matching the groomsmen, while the bridesmaids complemented the wedding party in dusty blue dresses from Ever Pretty. To welcome guests, there was an arrival drinks reception including a ‘Peroni and Prosecco station’, accompanied by canapés; followed by a threecourse wedding breakfast, wedding cake, and light bites later in the evening to fuel the dancing guests! Cheesecake were the evening band who performed a brilliant selection of songs, including Irish tunes, For memorable moments, Olivia admits there are too many to choose from, “Turning around to look out of the rear window of the wedding car after the confetti toss, and seeing all of our friends and family gathered waving us off to the reception, was a beautiful moment we won’t forget.” REAL WEDDINGS 33

From cold feet to no-show suppliers Protect your wedding day against unexpected events Brides and grooms-to-be are being warned to think ahead on possible disasters, and what they can do to protect their big day – it’s crucial for couples to understand the essential checklist, and plan for what could go wrong. The research comes after a survey revealed 26% of those planning a wedding in the next three years would not take out wedding insurance. Weddings come with a whole host of unforeseen risks, like supplier no-shows, damaged goods, technical faults, damaged or lost items, severe weather and accident or illness. Although no couple wants to think about these concerns in the run up to their wedding, it’s important to make sure they protect their special day, their finances and all the time spent planning – especially since more than half who were surveyed said their wedding budget has been impacted by the cost-of-living crisis. Your wedding insurance policy should include a point which states that if half of your guests are unable to attend due to extreme weather conditions, then you should be able to make a claim. Some policies will differ slightly on this, so it is important to check and make sure you are protected. 5Lost, stolen or damaged goods The cost of wedding bands, outfits, cake and flowers can all add up very quickly in the lead up to your wedding. So, protecting these things is essential. Your policy will most likely specify that any incidents, damage or loss needs to happen ahead of your reception in order to be covered. 6Public liability Public liability at a wedding is essential and covers the wedding organiser against any legal claims from guests, including injury and loss of goods.
