Your Sussex Wedding - June/July 2022 (Issue 97)

Q&A Beauty Look and feel your big day best with help from the professionals FINDING THE RIGHT SUPPORT Silly as it may sound, the thing I’m most worried about when it comes to my wedding-day look is my underwear. It needs to improve the look of my dress, be comfortable and look pretty all at the same time. It’s a challenge. Can you offer any advice? We turned to the founder of Sussex-based underwear brand Liberty & Love (www.libertyandlove.uk), Beth Kates, for the answers: “Whenever I’m doing bridal fittings the first thing I consider is the style of the dress. For example, with a halter-neck dress, you need a halter-neck bra. “The next thing to think about is which parts of your body you want to accentuate. Do you want to show off your curves or minimise them? Do you want to have something with support? The bra you choose will also very much depend on whether you want uplift or to enhance your cleavage. All of us have parts of our body we’re happy with and others we’re not. If you have a bit of a tummy for example, you might opt for a corset because they do up in a way that will work undereath most dresses. It’s about looking at the gown and how long you’ll have it on. “Something also worth bearing in mind is the colour you’ll be wearing. If you have an ivory gown, you’ll want ivory underwear underneath as white will show through, even with fabric like duchess satin or silk. So, try to colour match the underwear to the wedding dress. “It’s always best to go to somebody who knows what they’re doing – a specialist who can fit underwear, as they’ll be able to look at you and what you want to achieve, fitting the underwear to that dress. Ideally, go somewhere with a private studio, so you can actually take the gown with you and try it on with the underwear. A specialist should also be able to do alterations to make their pieces accommodate certain silhouettes. “There are so many different options from halter neck, strapless, full corset and straps, to shapewear, waist cinchers or simply pretty brief and suspender sets. So, it really does depend on your dress and the look you want to achieve.” 84
