A scentimental journey For more than a decade, Nancy Meiland has been weaving a world of scent that feels like coming home. In her Brighton atelier, she has created a space where fragrance is about finding your own authentic expression. Where every conversation begins with, “What do you love?” rather than, “What should you wear?”. Her newest fragrance is Iris Nebula (EDP £135.00 for 50ml), a potent love potion, perfect as a bridal fragrance, it deepens into luscious white pear and velvety iris butter. This is followed by an emerging trail of anise, caramel, resinous cedar, soft suede and violet powder notes. It’s hailed as an “atmospheric composition that lingers like a lover’s memory.” Available at nancymeiland.com or pop into the atelier at 2 Nile St, Brighton, BN1 1HW. A decade OF BLOOMS Based in central Brighton, Hunter Florist celebrated its 10th anniversary in September, while owner Neil has been working in the amazing world of flowers for nearly 30 years. “Being based in the city we tend to cater for the smaller intimate wedding, people for whom Brighton is a special place even if they don’t actually live in the city,” Neil explains. “We believe every wedding is personal and tailor our work for each wedding couple to make their day as special as we can, regardless of whether your wedding party consists of just six guests or 250, in Brighton and around. We love to create classic bouquets and individual eccentric arrangements to make your day as unique as you are. To us flowers are essential in everyday life, to celebrate, enhance and remember.” Here’s to the next 10 years of Hunter Florist! Find out more at hunterflorist.co.uk BEST OF LUCK East Sussex-based A Little Bit Naughty has entered The Wedding Industry Awards for the very first time in 2025 having received several nominations from its wonderful brides. Business owner Michelle says, “2025 has been my busiest wedding season yet, and I feel so grateful to all my couples who have voted for me in the awards so far. With three more weddings to go before the deadline, I’m hopeful that the support will continue! It really does mean the world.” Finalists will be announced in early October, and the regional awards take place on 25th November. “It’s such an exciting step for me and my little business,” Michelle continues. “I’m keeping everything crossed for good news. Whatever the outcome, it’s already been a fantastic journey.” We can’t wait to update you on the progress of this local lovely soon! CELEBRANT IN STYLE! Kate & Kate Celebrants are thrilled to have made it to the finals of the AOIC Celebrant Awards 2025, with results to be announced on 27th September. With more than 20 years’ experience and a shelf of accolades, Kate and Kate are known across Sussex and the South East for ceremonies that are anything but beige! Whether it’s a joyful wedding, a heartfelt funeral, a meaningful vow renewal or a celebratory naming, every script is written from scratch to reflect the people at its heart. As well as creating unforgettable ceremonies, the duo are also proud tutors for Match & Dispatch Celebrant Training, supporting and inspiring new celebrants across the UK. Backed by five-star reviews, their blend of warmth, professionalism and cheek has made them a trusted, much-loved choice. Find out more at kateandkatecelebrants.co.uk THE FINAL COUNTDOWN Sarah Blay, owner of local catering company Bay Tree Foods has recently been announced as a 2025 finalist in the UK Small Business Awards for Female Entrepreneur of the Year. With more than 30 years of industry experience, Sarah created Bay Tree Foods 11 years ago, starting with small family events, before building up to several weddings a year. “I focus on a casual, family friendly approach, offering sharing style dining rather than traditional formal full-service options in the form of barbecues, hot meals, tea parties and grazing,” she explains. These options also favour the budget as every penny helps in this current climate! Bay Tree Foods’ service includes a full tasting and planning meeting along with a venue visit, particularly important if it’s a new venue for Sarah. “I also have a network of fellow suppliers, so on the day, we all work seamlessly together, creating the perfect experience for our couples,” Sarah finishes. OUTDOORS The great Jade’s and Chris’ big day reflected their love of the outdoors with nods to time spent living in New Zealand Images courtesy of Sarah Williams Photography Chris proposed to Jade in New Zealand where they’d lived for two-and-a-half-years. He’d surprised her with a weekend away at one of their favourite beaches, Piha, and booked an apartment overlooking the ocean. While taking some pictures of the stunning view, he got down on one knee and popped the question. Due to their great love of the outdoors, the couple wanted to find a venue with a gorgeous al fresco ceremony space and discovered Brookfield Barn, close to home, fit the bill. So, they set the date for 1st August 2024. “We wanted our love for the outdoors to be showcased in our chosen theme for our special day,” Jade explains. So, they opted for a timeless green and white palette with oodles of greenery in the florals, including fern as nod to their time in New Zealand. It was the fern they regularly spotted on their scenic walks. “Our vision truly came to life, and we couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out,” Jade says. The scene was set in the ceremony space with white rose, gypsophila and soft ruscus pew ends. The wooden pergola was adorned in white drapes with two statement floral displays arranged in urns. A further long and low display graced the ceremony table, tying everything together with elegance. Inside the reception space, the outdoors made its way in with eye-catching wreath centrepieces created by the groom’s stepmother using locally grown flowers. Each guest had a personalised menu card positioned in a green napkin in contrast to the white tablecloths. Favours were pearly white iced homemade biscuits stamped with ‘Mr & Mrs Chopin’ and their wedding date. The stunning centrepiece hung from the centre of the ceiling – a showstopping wisteria-clad chandelier. The three-tier big-day bake bore the couple’s monogram and was decorated with ferns and roses, while the bottom tier was designed to mirror the pleats in the bridesmaids’ dresses. The beautiful bride wore Bexley by Maggie Sottero. “As soon as I tried it on, I just knew it was the one!” she tells us. “I was obsessed with the floral train, which worked perfectly with our wedding theme.” Meanwhile the groom and his party looked dapper in black tuxedos with the elegant bridesmaids dressed in serene forest green maxi dresses. A violinist played as guests arrived and throughout the ceremony, creating the perfect atmosphere. Later, a school friend of Jade’s and Britian’s Got Talent-winning vocalist performed sets during the drinks reception and following the wedding breakfast. The evening ended with a packed dancefloor with music courtesy of a live band. “Our wedding day was truly incredible from start to finish, filled with joy, love and unforgettable memories with our friends and family,” Jade remembers. “The weather certainly made it even more memorable as we said our vows and enjoyed our drinks reception in the blazing sun, then during our couple’s photoshoot in the evening the skies opened, and torrential rain came pouring down before revealing the most beautiful rainbow as we danced on the balcony.” REAL WEDDINGS 21

So, we chatted to its creator Carrie Raymond from Billingshurst-based Caritas Cake Design to discover more about the design process involved in creating such a showstopper. “There are so many directions you can take your wedding cake, so how do you narrow down the options?” Carrie says. “I start by asking some simple questions you may already know the answers to instinctively. The choices you’ve already made for your big day can often guide the cake design in the most natural way. By gently steering the conversation, I help cut through the noise and trends to find the right look for your wedding bake. “When I first met Jade and Chris, they knew they wanted a tiered cake and had a colour scheme in mind but weren’t sure how to approach the design itself. They brought along images and examples of their plans, acting as an informal mood board, which was perfect. We took inspiration from the texture and tones of their bridesmaids’ dresses, floral arrangements, and their wedding invitation to create something personal and cohesive. “To make the cake feel even more unique to them, we included a hand-painted monogram inspired by their invitation. Framed by painted ferns and foliage, it complemented their florals beautifully and tied in other meaningful details from the day. Indeed, the best inspiration often comes from the choices you’ve already made such as your colour palette, florals, stationery, even the fabric of your dress.” So, if you’re in the early stages of planning and find yourself unsure where to start with your cake, don’t worry. That’s exactly Caritas Cake Design comes in! Find out more at caritascakedesign.co.uk Adventures in cake

Rosie and Chris met through work at Tulleys Farm. He proposed to her on a golf course in Spain, “Just like a scene from High School Musical,” Chris remembers. They were both attracted to Firle Place by its dramatic drive and beautiful surrounding spaces, so went ahead and booked the date for 9th August 2025. In keeping with the elegant black-tie theme, Chris wore a black-tie suit as did his groomsmen. Rosie, meanwhile, looked stunning in a fitted A-line gown. The bridesmaids complemented the day’s colour palette dressed in sage green. 28

When it came to venue styling, “The venue sold itself,” Chris explains, so it needed only minimal, tasteful dressing with elegant white drapes and fairy lights. The tables were set up in romantic candlelight fashion in their chosen sage green palette with table runners and rustic wooden crates. To share the order of the day with guests, the couple had wedding newspapers detailing the day’s activities, which were handed out with service books at the church ceremony. Following the “I dos”, the newlyweds hosted a drinks reception and served Porn Star Martinis. Guests were treated to a delicious wedding breakfast of ham hock starter, a traditional roast dinner main with a deconstructed cheesecake for dessert. All assembled toasted the happiness of the couple during the speeches with Tequila Rose shots. Guests were entertained throughout the day ensuring there was never a dull moment thanks to the garden games, photo booth, music from a live saxophonist and a firework display. One of the highlights of the day for Chris was the sparkler tunnel which finished the night, as well as making his grand entrance in the morning via helicopter! REAL WEDDINGS 29

With the dramatic Seven Sisters as its backdrop this shoot defines the free-spirited elopement Images courtesy of Emotional Wedding Photography WILD HEARTS RUN FREE This Seven-Sisters-set bohemian elopement styled shoot emerged from a desire to capture the dramatic beauty of Sussex’s iconic chalk cliffs paired with free-spirited fashion and romance. “The wild coastal landscape inspired our entire creative direction,” explains photographer and shoot coordinator Gregory Kowalski from Emotional Wedding Photography. From a curated colour palette of sophisticated neutrals (sand, stone and ivory) with subtle pastel accents (dusky rose and sage green) to the deliberate use of movement, and drone piloting next to the cliffs, the team brought their vision of a dramatic elopement to life. “We applied those same artistic principles to showcase how couples can elevate their elopement with fashion-forward styling while maintaining a real, sensitive connection, along with imagery that feels both aspirational and emotionally resonant for modern couples seeking something extraordinary,” Gregory continues. Ultimately, the boho theme came to life through the coordination and togetherness of 11 creative souls. LOCAL SHOOT 39

Ceremony A romantic ambience Xingchen Yan for Unsplash HEART STRINGS For many, a string quartet calls to mind the Georgian and Regency eras. Think of the romance of a Jane Austen novel or, of course, everyone’s TV favourite Bridgerton. The sound immediately transports us back to assembly rooms with dapper gentlemen swirling elegant ladies in gorgeous gowns around the dancefloor, creating a dreamy atmosphere. If classical music isn’t your thing, most quartets will be more than happy to perform instrumental renditions of your favourite chart hits, regularly including them in their wedding repertoire as standard. If a string quartet is too much of a budget-buster, consider a solo musician who will create the same vibe equally well. Sticking to the strings we adore the mellow sound of a cellist, or the classic violin. Harpists too are an absolute wedding favourite and add an ethereal air to proceedings. KEY TO MY HEART Another versatile ceremony favourite is the piano. If you’re getting married in a stately home venue with a grand piano in situ, it would be a terrible waste not to use it! If there isn’t one handy, this instrument does require a little more logistical thought, so when making enquiries with a pianist find out what they’ll need. Worst case scenario, most will have an electric piano they can bring with them but do consider the possible difference in sound from a traditional instrument. We recommend listening to any videos they post on social media to get an idea and make sure you’re happy. Hrant Khachatryan for Unsplash RAISE YOUR VOICE Hands up if you remember Kingdom Choir’s incredible performance at Harry and Meghan’s wedding back in 2018? If you fancy a similar showstopping performance to grace your ceremony, we recommend looking into local chamber choirs. Typically consisting of around 12 to 30 members, they’re more space-friendly than a full 70-odd-strong choir and make as joyful or ethereal a sound as you wish thanks to their tight and intricate harmonies. Or, to really raise the roof, look into local gospel choirs who will make the most joyful noise possible. Turn your ceremony into a rip-roaring celebration, that’ll have guests on their feet! For something more low key, opt for an acoustic duo or soloist. Soloists will vary in style from beautiful sopranos for a sophisticated edge, to a musical theatre or folk feel. Whatever your musical taste, there’ll be someone out there for you so hit social media and Google to find the right fit for your preferred atmosphere. Bear in mind that vocalists can build up a huge following and reputation for themselves and can be much in demand. Especially since it’s possible to hire those who have featured on TV talent shows for example, so costs will vary greatly. Renee Van Den Kerkhof for Unsplash OUTSIDE THE BOX For something completely different, we recommend hiring a live painter to capture your ceremony. Not only does this leave you with a unique record of such an incredible moment in your lives, watching the artist work can provide guests with quite the entertaining spectacle during lulls such as when you’re signing the register. HAVE INSTRUMENT, WILL TRAVEL If you’ve found the perfect musician but they’re out of area, do make enquiries early on about travel costs. You will be expected to cover these expenses, so it’s important to know how this affects your quote early on. ENTERTAINMENT 45
